The Muskwa-Kechika Management Area (M-KMA) in northern British Columbia is globally significant for its size, special resource management, and cultural and ecological values. These characteristics were secured in perpetuity through the British Columbian Government’s M-KMA Act in 1998. However, today low public awareness and engagement are seen as threats to the M-KMA’s effectiveness and longevity. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research examined the role of awareness and engagement in safeguarding the M-KMA by conducting semi-structured interviews and a media analysis, both of which informed a public survey. Informing the research design were underlying theories in sense of place, place branding, and the relationship of planned behaviour to place-protective behaviour. Additionally, resource management practices like ecosystem-based management informed the research design and methods of public participation in policy formation.

Entrepreneurial legacies play an important role in transgenerational entrepreneurship, yet little is known about their nature and development. Through a multilayered analysis of narratives drawn from three generations of a single business family, we document that entrepreneurial legacies feature both stable and fluid elements, and that forward-looking components in family storytelling—which we refer to as “anticipated futures”—affect this dynamic character. We further show how such narratives can prompt, sustain, and disrupt entrepreneurship across multiple generations. Our findings offer insights that refine our understanding of entrepreneurial legacies beyond mere projections of the past through secondhand imprinting.

Pogonotrophy refers to beard cultivation including growth and grooming practices. This exploratory study contributes to the little understood role of beard culture on YouTube. Scholarship examining the relationship between social media platforms such as YouTube and beard culture is almost nonexistent. This gap in the research allows us to ask the following: What sorts of content do users circulate about beards on YouTube? And, how does this content contribute to how users interact and learn about beards? A total of 62,061 user-generated comments across 310 videos featured on the Beardbrand YouTube channel were collected and examined using qualitative media analysis. Three themes emerged from an analysis of these data: the yeard quest, the ideal type, and how to beard. The findings illustrate the important role that YouTube plays in fostering contemporary beard culture. Suggestions for future research are noted.

Since the late 1990s, nation branding has attracted a lot of attention from academics, professional consultants and government actors. The ideas and practices of nation branding are frequently presented by branding advocates as necessary and even inevitable in the light of changing dynamics of political power and influence in a globalised and media-saturated world. In this context, some have argued that nation branding is a way to reduce international conflict and supplant ethno-nationalism with a new form of market-based, national image management. However, a growing body of critical studies has documented that branding campaigns tend to produce ahistorical and exclusionary representations of the nation and advance a form of ‘commercial nationalism’ that is problematic. Importantly, the critical scholarship on nation branding has relied primarily on sociological and anthropological theories of nationhood, identities and markets. By contrast, the role of the media – as institutions, systems and societal storytellers – has been undertheorised in relation to nation branding. The majority of the existing literature tends to treat the media as ‘neutral’ vehicles for the delivery of branding messages to various audiences. This is the guest editors’ introduction to the Special Issue ‘Theorizing Media in Nation Branding’, which seeks to problematise this overly simplistic view of ‘the media’ and aims to articulate the various ways in which specific media are an integral part of nation branding. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach and problematises both the enabling and the inhibiting potentialities of different types of media as they perpetuate nation branding ideas, images, ideologies, discourses and practices.

This article provides insights into the role of minority employees in reproducing and contesting the discourse of meritocracy in contemporary organizations. It also discusses the effects the contestation of meritocracy, or the lack thereof, has on organizational power relations and on the situation of individuals who are the target of meritocratic policies. Empirically, we address the experiences of a growing category of workers—women academics of non-UK origin—employed within UK business schools. Based on the analysis of narratives focusing on the career trajectories of our research participants, we show how the belief in, and paradoxically the questioning of, meritocratic principles contribute to the reproduction of inequalities. We conclude that, as a result of the overarching perpetuation, and only limited challenging of, extant power relations in organizations, both the current definitions of merit and the application of meritocratic principles remain unchanged.

The article presents results of the first stage of a three year research project on the role of parents as educational and social partners of the school in the Czech Republic. Basic questions are: What does the school consider parents to be and how is their position defined in the legislature? To what extent are parents influenced in their attitudes to school by the reflection of the contemporary school in the media? The methodological frame of this study includes application of the existing theoretical framework and methods like content analysis of the school legislature and documents, and analysis of selected media. Such analyses focus on how information about schools and school system is presented to parents and the general public. As far as legislative conditions are concerned, the results indicate that they do not define precisely parents' position towards the school and therefore it is only up to the good will of both sides — parents and teachers — to create their own definitions. As far as the media context is concerned, the picture presented by media is rather unfavourable towards school issues and teachers in particular which could make interactions between the school and parents not an easy matter.

This paper examines the complex interaction between island histories and island geographies by presenting a case study of Dongzhou Island, Hengyang, China, contextualized through several critical island events. Employing a wide range of methods including archival research, textual and media analysis, field and map observations, semi-structured interviews, and informal interaction, the research is broadly framed in the problematic of geographical memory consisting of hard island memory, soft island memory, and lived island memory. Particular attention is paid to the construction of Dongzhou Island’s cultural trauma based on three difficult island histories: mass killing, radical planning, and uneven development. Findings indicate that these memories coexist on or about the island, in virtual isolation from each other. It is argued that while hard memory constructs the island as a petrified landmark, soft memories murmur about the forgotten or obscured pains of a small island that bears witness to the violence of war and progress. The theoretical and practical implications regarding the role of place memory in rejuvenating local cultures are also proposed.

This article aims to explore the Chinese ways of being Muslim, from buildingthe Cheng Hoo mosque to serving Islamic education and media literacy. Inthe current millennial disruption era, the role of communication medialiteracy in the contemporary Indonesian Chinese Muslim community needsto be studied further, especially its role in supporting the status of being goodChinese Muslim. This article is also intended to discuss the Chinese ways offostering converts and Chinese Muslims through both communication medialiteracy and information technology literacy. Through media analysis method,communication media literacy is part of communication which is based on whosays what, in which channel, to whom, with what effects. This research finds outthat communication media literacy is used by the Indonesian Chinese Muslimcommunity through the publication of Cheng Hoo magazine, WhatsApp ForumPITI Jatim, website, and Facebook. Melaluimetode analisis media, literasi media komunikasi merupakan bagian darikomunikasi yang berbasis pada siapa bicara apa, kapan, di mana dan melaluimedia apa serta apa dampaknya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa literasimedia komunikasi yang digunakan komunitas Tionghoa Muslim di Indonesiamelalui penerbitan majalah Cheng Hoo, WhatsApp Forum PITI Jatim, Website dan Facebook. Semua media tersebut digunakan dan memiliki dampak signifikanbagi relasi, interaksi dan komunikasi antara komunitas Tionghoa Muslimdengan Tionghoa non-Muslim dan komunitas Tionghoa Muslim dengan non-Tionghoa Muslim di negeri ini. Lebih dari itu, cara Tionghoa menjadi Muslimyang baik juga terlihat dalam beberapa pelayanan pendidikan Islam berbasiskomunitas Tionghoa di Indonesia dari Taman Kanak-Kanak, Sekolah DasarIslam, pengajian rutin, dan Pesantren.

Tens of thousands of children living on Mainland China cross the border between Shenzhen and Hong Kong for a ‘better education’ every day. A well-oiled industry is in place to manage, facilitate and control this education mobility field. It involves schools, diverse businesses and non-governmental organisations that, in articulation with the Chinese and Hong Kong states, stimulate and regulate the movement of people, materialities, ideas and practices. Drawing on our fieldwork and media analysis, this paper unpacks the transurban mobility industry to illustrate the role of the various players and how they work in conjunction to facilitate cross-border schooling, especially among the very young children. We map out and visualise with photos the workings of the schools, buses, escorts, tutoring centres, day care and boarding houses. We show how the mobility industry, intersecting with other business networks and mobility systems, links Shenzhen and Hong Kong, taking and making places in these cities, especially in the border region. Our paper illustrates the role of this mobility industry in the making of the political-economy and socio-culture of the border area, which constantly connects, divides and redefines the two cities and regions it bridges. We end with some reflections on the implications of the recent political challenges and COVID-19 pandemic on this cross-border education mobility system.

This study aims to determine the role of print media (newspaper analysis) in increasing the political participation of the community in Bandar Selamat sub-district, Medan Tembung sub-district, Medan city. This study uses a quantitative method with a population consisting of 12 environments with a population of 4490 households. The sample is 2 (two) environments, namely environment VI totaling 527 families and environment X1 totaling 178 families, so as to obtain a total sample of 71 families. Sampling was carried out using purposive sampling technique, namely the two environments that have a high reading level of newspaper analysis. Data collection techniques are carried out by observation, questionnaire and documentation. To analyze the data, the product Moment correlation formula is used. Based on the results of research and data analysis it can be seen that the hypothesis (Ha) can be accepted, with the interpretation that there is a low influence (12%). Where the variable X (the role of the print media "Analysis newspaper") is very well enjoyed by the community in Bandar Selamat Village, but on the other hand the variable Y (the political participation of the community is relatively low). Therefore, it can be said that the role of the print media in increasing the political participation of the community is low. Based on the results of testing the hypothesis (Ha) can be accepted with the conclusion that there is a low influence on the role of the print media in increasing the political participation of the community in Bandar Selamat Village, Medan Tembung Sub-District, Medan City.
