Our study sought to evaluate the prevalence of binge drinking in adolescents and its association with density of alcohol outlets around schools. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, with 436 high-school students aged between 17 and 19 and enrolled in 18 public and private schools. The students completed the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT-C), consisting of questions about alcohol consumption by parents and siblings, and socioeconomic status (type of school, mother’s education level). Data from geographic information systems were used to estimate the density of alcohol outlets around schools participating. The association between exploratory variables and binge drinking was investigated using multilevel logistic regression analysis (p < 0.05) with random intercepts and fixed slopes. A three-step sequential modeling strategy was adopted. The prevalence of binge drinking was 39.9%. The alcohol consumption among adolescents was lower for those studying in areas with low density of alcohol outlets around schools (OR = 0.32; 95%CI: 0.14; 0.73) and the consumption of alcohol by mothers was associated with binge drinking among adolescents (OR = 1.94; 95%CI: 1.14; 3.30). Our study concluded that binge drinking among adolescents was associated with density of alcohol outlets around the schools and mother’s alcohol consumption.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of alcohol consumption among students at senior high school Number 3 at An Nhon district, BinhDinh province in 2015. The results showed that the percentage of having ever consumed alcohol and having consumed alcohol during the past 30 days was 58.7% (95% [CI] 53.7% - 63.7%), and 42% (95%[CI] 37% - 47%), respectively. The proportion of frequent drinking was 3.2% (95% CI 1.7% - 5.6%), regular drinking was 5.9% (95% [CI]3.7%-8%), and of binge drinking was 6.4% (95% [CI] 3.9% - 8.9%). The median of number of drinks taking in one occasion was 3, with the inter-quartile range of 1 - 5. Male having drinking friends and being invited to drink by friends were factors associated with alcohol consumption, regular drinking, and binge drinking. The amount of money given by family was a related factor to binge drinking, the more money the higher chance of binge. Parents should pay attention to children’s friends, especially the ones drinking alcohol. It is necessary to introduce to senior high school students a health education program about harmful effects of alcohol drinking

Background: Alcohol consumption and driving after drinking have become major public health problems worldwide. Time of first getting drunk is becoming earlier among young people and alcohol has become an important risk factor for injuries, especially traffic injuries among the youth. Objective: To assess the patterns of alcohol consumption and drink-driving behaviour of high school students aged from 15-18. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 2,625 high school students in 2 provinces of Bac Giang and Binh Thuan. Results: The average age of first time drinking was 14.4, the average age of first time getting drunk was 15.5. The proportion of students drinking in the past year was 25.9%, of which in Binh Thuan province was 17.6% and that in Bac Giang province was 33.2%. Among students who drank before, 80% of them reported of consuming from 1 to 2 drinks, while 8.6% reported consuming 3 or 4 drinks on a typical day when drinking. The reported rate of drink-driving among these students was 12.1%. Conclusion: Alcohol consumption and driving after drinking among high school students are alarming in Vietnam. The findings suggest an urgent need for a multi-sectorial approach to curtail drink driving among high school students in Vietnam as well as a need of developing an accessible model in the community to support young people to limit the drinking and drink-driving behavior. The main objective of this cross-sectional study was to analyze factors associated with alcohol consumption among adult women living in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in 2011. Data for Belo Horizonte were obtained from the VIGITEL system (Telephone-Based Surveillance of Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases). Alcohol use was defined as self-reported intake of at least one dose in the previous 30 days; alcohol abuse was defined as four or more doses on at least one occasion during the same period. Polytomous logistic regression was used to evaluate factors associated with alcohol use and abuse. Alcohol use was more prevalent among women 25 to 34 years of age. Alcohol abuse was associated with age, schooling, health status, and smoking. The results suggest the need for policies to prevent alcohol abuse among women, especially targeting those who are younger, single, smokers, and with more education.

Abstract Background Binge drinking is defined, by 5 or more doses of alcohol on a single occasion (4 or more, in case of women). The excessive alchool consumption is the behavior with the most significant impact on youth mortality and morbidity. Binge drinking is a public health problem that can be preventable. The aim of this investigation was to estimate the prevalence of binge drinking and analyze the associated factors to this behaviour among high school students from Fafe, Portugal. Methods Cross-sectional study. Invited 1334 high-school students, aged between 15 and 19 to fill in an anonymous self-administered digital survey between May and June 2019, wich includes questions about alcohol sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity and smoking. Associations between binge drinking in the last 2 months and the several factors were analyzed through multivariated logistic regression, using IBM SPSS v.20, considering a significance level of 5%. Results A total of 786 students answered the survey (response rate 58.9%), 714 surveys were validated. The median age of participants was 17(1.074 sd) years and 54,8% were girls. The proportion of students from academic high school were 70.9%. Considering all the students estimated binge drinking prevalence was 28.6% (95%IC:25.35-31.79) and 41,5% (95%IC:36.9-45.8) within who have reported to drink. Binge drinking was associated with male gender (OR = 1.75; 95%IC:1.186-2.585), regulary cigarrete smoking (OR = 7.48; 95%IC: 3.422-16.347), being on 12th grade (OR = 2,677; 95%IC:1.625-4.412). There wasńt found association on binge drinking proportion between students from academic or vocational school. Conclusions Our study concluded that binge drinking is common among Fafe high school students. This study provides relevant information to public health authorities about the binge drinke behaviour on this population and makes possible to identify the most high-risk students of binge drinking in order to planning interventions. Key messages Binge drinking pattern is increasing among adolescents and young adults. Future preventive interventions on binge drinking are importante and should consider the associated factors of this behaviour.
