Education today needs to be responsive to the diverse needs of our learners in order to make them globally competent. Innovative initiatives need to be brought into the present education system in order to meet the growing demands of our society. Our education system does not function in isolation with our society and so, along with academic aspects, the social aspects of learning too, have to be focussed on. This is possible with quality teaching strategies being introduced in our teaching learning process and one such strategy promoting the same is Cooperative Learning. Cooperative learning involves students working together in small groups to accomplish shared goals. It is widely recognized as a teaching strategy that promotes socialization and learning among students from kindergarten through college and across different subjects and science is no exception. Science enables pupils to be involved in group work where they have the opportunity to share ideas and cooperate with each other in collaborative practical activity. What is needed today is a new wave of educated students ready for modern scientific research, teaching and technological development. With students of diverse abilities and differing rates of learning in our classrooms, it is, therefore, essential for the teacher to have the knowledge of how students learn science and how best to teach. The present study was taken up in this context to find out the effectiveness of cooperative learning strategy in science teaching.

Many learning theories and studies on classroom discourse explain that teachers’ speech has an important role in determining student learning success. The teachers’ speech in teaching-learning interactions influences the activity and comfort of students’ learning. This study aimed to describe how the teachers’ speech stimulates students in learning interaction. This study used a qualitative approach to the type of classroom research.  Participants in this study were 4 teachers who taught Indonesian, Mathematics, Science, and English at Mts. Islamiyah. Data of the study were the teachers’ speech and its context of stimulating students in learning interaction. The data collected through classroom observations and recording of teachers’ speech and the context of the speech. By qualitative analysis, this study found that the teachers’ speech at the beginning of learning, in the learning process, and at the end of learning has various types and functions depending on the speech context underlying the speech events in the classroom interaction. The speech context includes students as audiences, speech functions, learning material as speech topics, learning interactions as speech situations. The use of teachers’ speech was a learning strategy conducted by teachers to stimulate students motivated for learning.

When solving multi-objective optimization problems, an important issue is how to promote convergence and distribution simultaneously. To address the above issue, a novel optimization algorithm, named as multi-objective modified teaching-learning-based optimization (MOMTLBO), is proposed. Firstly, a grouping teaching strategy based on pareto dominance relationship is proposed to strengthen the convergence efficiency. Afterward, a diversified learning strategy is presented to enhance the distribution. Meanwhile, differential operations are incorporated to the proposed algorithm. By the above process, the search ability of the algorithm can be encouraged. Additionally, a set of well-known benchmark test functions including ten complex problems proposed for CEC2009 is used to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. The results show that MOMTLBO exhibits competitive performance against other comparison algorithms. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to the aerodynamic optimization of airfoils.

This study was undertaken to assess the needs/problems of students of nursing regarding facilitation as a teaching/learning method. Facilitation as a teaching and learning strategy was uncommon and innovative in nature and presented a challenge to the students as it was a new way of learning. Focus group interviews were conducted. The sample study consisted of eight (8) groups of learners from four universities engaged in this curriculum. To answer the research question a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive design was used and the students were selected purposively. Data analysis using transcribed focus interviews, was based on the combined approaches of Tesch (1990) in Cresswell (1994:153-155) and the basic steps of Giorgi (1970) as quoted by Ornery (1983:49-63). The themes identified were about the experiences of the facilitation process and problems with the facilitators. All the students experienced the facilitation of learning negatively in the beginning but became more positive later when they adapted to this method of learning.
