Abstract LTA and FAU zeolites were synthesized with the addition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to assess the effects of Si/Al, Na/Al and H2O/Al ratios, time and temperature on the yield of each structure. The significance of each variable was determined by means of experimental designs, whose response variables were the areas of specific XRD peaks. CTAB did not act as a structure-directing agent, but rather as a growth modifier, increasing the growth rate of LTA and FAU crystals. At low temperature, LTA was afforded at low Si/Al ratio, while FAU crystallized at higher ratios, indicating a competition between the phases. Increasing temperature accelerated the kinetics of recrystallization of the less dense and metastable LTA and FAU phases in denser and more stable phases, such as sodalite and cancrinite. Decreasing the concentration of Na+ and water reduced the crystallinity of both structures, while increasing the concentration of Na+ favored LTA over FAU.

The crystallization kinetics of polymer thin film has a great difference from that in the bulk. Generally, the growth rate of the crystal confined in thin film reduces with decreasing film thickness, which is believed that the interaction between chains and substrate is responsible for the decrease of the growth rate. In addition, the ratio of film thickness over crystal thickness is also a key parameter in determining the growth rate. The relationship between the crystal lateral size and the crystallization time also dominates the crystal growth mechanism in polymer thin film.

Abstract In this work, a mathematical model was used in order to study the growth kinetics of (Fe2B/FeB) bilayer during bori-ding process basing on the second Fick’s law and mass balance equation. The run of the numerical simulation allowed calculating the incubation time (τ) of each boronized layer (Fe2B or FeB), and estimating the effect of this parameter on the growth of the boronized layer. The boride incubation time for forming the FeB or Fe2B layer on the pure iron substrate was incorporated into the present mathematical model. To simulate the value of the growth rate constant and the incubation time for the bilayer configuration, the experimental data available in the literature concerning the boronizing of pure iron were considered. Based on the experimental and simulation results, it was shown that the incubation time decreases with increasing temperature in the FeB and Fe2B phases. It was concluded from this study that the thickness of each boride layer depended on its growth rate constant and on another parameter kτ which was the rate constant of incubation time. The obtained results confirmed the validity of the present mathematical model and gave a good estimate of the incubation time during the formation of each boride layer as well as formulated the variation of this parameter with a mathematical equation. Furthermore, the comparison of experimental data with the simulated results of boronized layer thickness allowed to validate the present model.

The paper presents the surface morphology and crystal structure of AlN layers formed by ammonia MBE on 3C-SiC/Si(111) on-axis and 4° off-axis disorientation. It offers the technological approach of low-temperature epitaxy of the AlN nucleation layer on the 3C-SiC (111) surface. Root mean square roughness (5 х 5 |xm) of AlN layers with thickness of 150 ± 50 nm was 2,5-3,5 nm onto on-axis templates and 3.3-3.5 nm onto 4° off-axis. It appears that the RMS roughness of the AlN surface is changing with the growth rate variation. Single-crystal AlN(0002) layers with FWHM values (ω-geometry) of 1.4-1.6° have been obtained.

The course of the conversion of methanol with water vapour was followed on a low-temperature Cu-Zn-Cr-Al catalyst at pressures of 0.2 and 0.6 MPa. The kinetic data were evaluated together with those obtained at 0.1 MPa and the following equation for the reaction kinetics at the given conditions was derived: r = [p(CH3OH)p(H2O)]0.5[p(H2)]-1.3.

The authors proposed and treated quantitatively a kinetic model for deposition of epitaxial GaAs layers prepared by reaction of trimethylgallium with arsine in hydrogen atmosphere. The transport of gallium to the surface of the substrate is considered as the controlling process. The influence of the rate of chemical reactions in the gas phase and on the substrate surface on the kinetics of the deposition process is neglected. The calculated dependence of the growth rate of the layers on the conditions of the deposition is in a good agreement with experimental data in the temperature range from 600 to 800°C.

Offretite zeolite synthesis in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) is reported. The offretite crystals were synthesized with a high crystallinity and hexagonal prismatic shape after only 72 h of hydrothermal treatment at 180 °C. The CTABr has dual-functions during the crystallization of offretite, viz. as structure-directing agent and as mesoporogen. The resulting offretite crystals, with a Si/Al ratio of 4.1, possess more acid sites than the conventional offretite due to their high crystallinity and hierarchical structure. The synthesized offretite is also more reactive than its conventional counterpart in the acylation of 2-methylfuran for biofuel production under non-microwave instant heating condition, giving 83.5% conversion with 100% selectivity to the desired product 2-acetyl-5-methylfuran. Hence, this amphiphile synthesis approach offers another cost-effective and alternative route for crystallizing zeolite materials that require expensive organic templates.

In attempts to obtain protein crystals of a sufficient size for structural studies, lack of knowledge of the physicochemical properties of protein solutions and of their crystal-growth behaviour lead to a bottleneck for drug design as well as for X-ray crystallography. Most formal investigations on crystal-growth phenomena have been focused on equilibrium studies, where the protein is soluble, and on the kinetics of crystal growth, which is related to both nucleation and crystal-growth phenomena. The aim of this work is to measure the crystal-growth rate along a capillary tube used as a growing cell. These experiments were carried out using the gel-acupuncture technique [García-Ruiz et al. (1993). Mater. Res. Bull. 28, 541–546; García-Ruiz & Moreno (1994). Acta Cryst. D50, 484–490; García-Ruiz & Moreno (1997). J. Cryst. Growth, 178, 393–401]. Crystal-growth investigations took place using lysozyme and thaumatin I as standard proteins. The maximum average growth rate obtained in the lower part of the capillary tube was about 35 Å s−1 and the minimum average growing rate in the upper part of the capillary tube was about 8 Å s−1. The crystal-growth rate as a function of the supersaturation was experimentally estimated at a constant height along the capillary tube.
