Abstract Objectives: this study aimed to describe direct medical-hospital costs of hospitalizations for Congenital Syphilis (CS) in children under one year of age, users of the public health network in the state of Ceará, Brazil, from 2012 to 2017. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study that used the DATASUS Hospital Information System database, built from the information registered in the Inpatient Hospital Authorizations (IHA), organized in a Microsoft Office Excel 2010 spreadsheet and analyzed in SPSS, version 23. Results: there were 4,085 hospitalizations registered for CS (16.6% of total hospital admissions for infectious and parasitic diseases) at a cost of US$ 927,726.84, representing an annual average of US$ 234.73 per child. A slight decrease in approved IHA for infectious and parasitic diseases (5.5%) was verified when compared with CS, which increased by 36.4%> over the evaluated years. Conclusion: high treatment costs for CS in the state of Ceará were identified, a situation that could be avoided if pregnant women with syphilis were diagnosed and treated during prenatal care.

AbstractIntroductionEnteroparasites represent a considerable proportion of infectious parasitic diseases worldwide. This study evaluated the frequency of enteroparasites and the correlation of enteroparasites with hemoglobin levels. This study evaluated the frequency of enteroparasites and the correlation of themwith hemoglobin levels.MethodsA cross-sectional study was performed in the municipality of Oiapoque in the state of Amapá in northern Brazil, which is located at the western border of the Amazon region. Fecal samples collected over a one-year period (2014/2015) were analyzed using direct methods and spontaneous sedimentation.ResultsThe study included 446 individuals ranging in age from 7 to 61 years. Among the investigated individuals, 58.6% (261/446) were infected with some type of enteroparasites. Of these infected individuals, 45.2% (118/261) were infected only by helminth, 40.9% (107/261) were infected with protozoa, and 13.8% (36/261) had combined infections. Ascaris lumbricoides (19.9%, 52/261) was the most commonly detected helminth, followed by Entamoeba coli and Endolimax nana that were the most frequent protozoan (17.2%, 45/261). The study showed an inversely proportional correlation between the hemoglobin level and the presence of detected parasites. Conclusions: In Oiapoque, enteroparasitosis diseases may be one of the causes of anemia in the population. The high frequency of enteroparasites is a clear reflection of the lack of sanitation in the studied region, indicating an epidemiological state of concern.

Background: In evaluation of non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage CT angiography (CTA) has 97-98% sensitivity and near 100% specificity. Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the CTA findings of CT positive non traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. Methodology: This is an observational cross sectional study performed in Neurology department of National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, Dhaka over one year period (January 2019 to December 2019). Total 87 CT positive subarachnoid hemorrhage cases were purposively included in this study. All CT positive patients underwent CTA of Cerebral vessels for further evaluation. The angiography were evaluated by competent neuro-radiologists blinded about the study. Result: Among 87 patients, 40.2% were male and 59.8% were female. The average age was 53.33±11.1 years. Among the studied patient the source of bleeding was found 78.16% aneurysmal and 21.84% non-aneurysmal. 85.30% patients had single aneurysm and 14.70% had multiple aneurysm. The highest number of patient had Acom aneurysm (41.17%) followed by MCA (22.05%), ICA (13.23%), ACA (7.35%) and vertebral artery (1.14%) in order of frequency. Among the multiple aneurysm group most of the patients had combination of Acom, MCA and ICA aneurysm. Conclusion: From this study, we can conclude that CTA can be used as the primary diagnostic tool in evaluation of spontaneous SAH. Urgent care (UC) is one of the fastest growing venues of health care delivery for nonemergent conditions. This study compared the patient experience during virtual and in-person urgent care visits. We conducted a cross-sectional study of patients with the same diagnosis during Virtual Urgent Care (VUC) and in-person UC visits with the same diagnosis with regard to time and cost over a period of one year. We recorded and analyzed 16 685 urgent care visits: In-person UC (n = 14 734), VUC (n = 1262). Significant differences were found in the average total time for a visit in an in-person UC (70.89 minutes), and VUC (9.38 minutes). The average total cost of VUC ($49) and in-person UC ($142.657) differed significantly. Significant difference was found between UC turnaround time and VC turnaround time (Dependent variable (DV): 53.77, P < .01). We found significant differences in cost and time between in favor of virtual visits. Our findings suggest additional policy reform to expand the use of virtual care among target populations to improve access, reduce costs, meet the needs of patients, and reduce emergency department visits.

Background: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) consumption poses serious health problems and is considered to be a signicant risk factor for oral, esophageal and pancreatic cancers. Estimation of the magnitude of consumption of SLT would be useful in planning for tobacco control activities in the community. Objectives: The study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of smokeless tobacco (SLT) use among adult population and to identify the socioeconomic factors associated with the SLT use among them. Methods: This was a community based cross-sectional study conducted in an urban resettlement colony of North East Delhi among adult population (>18 years age). A pre-tested interview schedule adapted from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey India (GATS India) was used for data collection. Data was analyzed using SPPS version 25. Results: A total of 440 study participants were enrolled for the study. The overall prevalence of SLT use was 24.5% (95 % CI: 20.6 - 28.8), higher in males (28.7%)(OR 1.75) as compared to females (18.7%), more in graduate or above educated (34.6%)(OR 2.02), and among government employees (48.6%)(OR 4.2)(p<0.05). The prevalence of common forms of SLT consumed were: pan masala with tobacco (15%), gutka (12.3%), zarda (10.5%), khaini (9.3%), and gul (5.2%). The most common reason for initiation of SLT use among the users was found to be seeking enjoyment 46(42.6%). Only 35 (37.6%) current SLT users planned to quit SLT in next one year of the survey. Conclusion: Nearly one fourth of the study subjects used SLT and more among males, education level graduate and above, and Government employees. This highlights the need to plan behavior change communication strategies and counsel them for reduction or cessation of SLT use

Abstract Introduction: Hyperphosphatemia is associated with unfavorable outcomes, and the percentage of patients presenting with this condition in hemodialysis (HD) in kidney foundation units in the state of Santa Catarina (SC) is historically higher than that of patients in the state of Tocantins (TO). Objective: To assess the frequency of consumption of the main dietary sources of phosphorus and to compare them between the two states. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out involving 123 patients, 66 of SC and 57 of TO: 52% were men, average age was 46.9 ± 15.7 years, and mean HD time 48 (57-71) months. A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) with 33 items that are dietary sources of phosphorus was applied. A consumption score was calculated for sources of organic, inorganic, and total phosphorus, and the six-month average of phosphatemia was obtained. Results: The mean phosphatemia of SC patients was higher (6.2 ± 1.5 vs 4.7 ± 1.3 mg/dL, p <0001) than TO patients, as well as the prevalence of hyperphosphatemia (62% vs 28%; p <10001). In the total sample, the foods most frequently consumed were milk and beans. Comparing the frequency of consumption between the two states, a significant difference was found in 17 items. In TO, beef and beans were the foods most frequently consumed, and in SC, fourteen other items of the FFQ (pork, sausages, dairy products, etc.) were the most frequently consumed. Phosphatemia correlated with the frequency of consumption of inorganic phosphorus sources. Conclusion: the frequency of consumption of several items was different between the states, and this explains the differences in phosphatemia between the two regions.
