The study describes changes that are noted in students during training and which contribute to define a professional profile. We carried out a descriptive-exploratory study with a qualitative approach, based on dialectics as a theoretical-methodological framework. The data was obtained from documented analysis and through focal groups with teachers, students and service nurses. The results show the student's position as an active subject in the teaching-learning process, through a movement of transformation of academic structures. A correlation was found between the movement that seeks students' greater political, active and critical participation as a way of determining and guiding the profile of the generalist nurse and greater social insertion. We conclude that, despite efforts, training guidelines and the definition of the professional profile in the study settings is directed at the demands of the labor market, and that competency-based training is still incipient.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the perception of dignity of patients in palliative care and to identify factors that may increase or decrease the sense of dignity. Method: an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, carried in a Palliative Care Center in São Paulo (Brazil), with the Chochinov’s Dignity Model as theoretical framework and content analysis as methodological framework. The participants of this study were 20 patients in palliative care, assessed through semi-structured interviews based on three questions: "What is dignity for you?", "What increases your dignity?", "What decreases your dignity?" The interviews were recorded with the patients’ authorization, from September to November 2017, and transcribed for content analysis. Results: the analysis of the perception of dignity allowed the identification of three categories: Correct person, Autonomy/independence and Socio-political factors. The factors that increased the sense of dignity were the following: Care, Independence/autonomy, Leisure/positive thinking/being with friends. And those that decreased it were the following: Behaviors/attitudes, Health status and Economic situation. Conclusion: the perception of dignity of patients in palliative care was influenced by health professionals and caregivers. Being a “correct person”, maintaining autonomy, being cared for and respected has increased the sense of dignity. Urban violence and the lack of compliance with accessibility policies have reduced the sense of dignity among palliative care patients.

The authors originally posited that a new construct must be developed to measure the success of affective training for sexologists, particularly the Sexuality Attitudes Reassessment (SAR) modality. Couching their critique in studies that have been conducted to measure the SAR’s effectiveness as a method used to evoke perspective transformation and more sensitive and humanistic service provision, the authors argued that the development of a professional’s sexological worldview would be a more accurate construct than attitude change to measure when considering the outcomes of SAR training. This study in the United States used a two-phase qualitative approach to validate the proposed sexological worldview construct. In the first phase, they surveyed a panel of 16 sexologists regarding their original proposed definition of sexological worldview and refined it. In the second phase, they completed 30 one-on-one interviews with a convenience sample of sexologists and sexology students. Using an inductive content analysis of the interview transcripts, seven themes emerged in support of the proposed definition of sexological worldview, including its components and its developmental characteristics. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications for the use of the construct for the training of sexologists.

Purpose Through a literature review, a gap has been identified regarding the role of competition as a driver of social network (SN) usage. This study aims to design to address this gap, seeking motivators for SN usage based on how SN consumption may be related to users’ experience of competition. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of competition in social media usage. Design/methodology/approach The authors used an exploratory qualitative approach, conducting a set of focus groups with young social media users. Data was analyzed with software. Findings Two new drivers for SN use are proposed, namely, competition and collective narrative. Research limitations/implications This is an exploratory study, and it does not seek to generalize results or quantify causal relationships among variables. Practical implications This paper offers SN managers a deeper understanding of key growth drivers for these media. Social implications This research can help society understand and debate the impacts of SNs on users’ lives, providing insights into drivers of excessive usage. Originality/value This paper proposes the following two SN usage drivers yet to be described in the literature: competition and collective narrative.
