Among the several fish species comercially exploited at the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, the "pacu" (Piaractus mesopotamicus) stands as one of the most important. Information regarding its exploitation level is necessary for the proper management of its stocks. Between 1996 and 1997 data on total length of the pacu were collected on a monthly basis from specimens caught by professional and sport fishers in the municipality of Corumbá. These data were used to estimate growth parameters and to assess the exploitation level for this species, applying the Beverton and Holt yield per recruit model. Length frequency analysis, carried out with the software FISAT (ELEFAN), was used to estimate growth parameters: 1996: L¥ = 87.20 cm; K = 0.34 year-1; phi´=3.41; C = 0.74; WP = 0.81; Longevity = 8.40 years; and 1997: L¥ = 86.50 cm; K = 0.34 year-1; phi´=3.40; C = 0.60; WP = 0.80; Longevity = 8.40 years. The value for t0is -0.363 years for mean values of L¥ and k. The weight-length relationship, calculated from data derived from experimental fisheries carried out in 1999 and 2000, is described by the equation: W = 0.048LF2.835. Estimated mortalities and survival rates were: 1996: Z = 1.51 year-1; M = 0.62 year-1; F = 0.89 year-1; S = 21.9%; and 1997: Z = 1.65 year-1; M = 0.63 year-1; F = 1.02 year-1; S = 19.1%. The yield per recruit analysis showed the following values: F Present= 0.96 year-1; Fmax = 0.67 year-1 ; F0.1 = 0.51 year-1 (for Lc = 26.7 cm). These results suggest that the pacu is overexploited in the area, so that restrictive measures are in need to manage the pacu fisheries.

A histological analysis was conducted on the gills of 15 Piaractus mesopotamicus and 19 Prochilodus lineatus specimens collected between April and November 2004 from the Aquidauana River, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Central-West Brazil, to describe the anatomopathological characteristics of the gills of these freshwater fish. Gill samples were fixated in 10% buffered formalin and processed following histological routine procedures. The histological examination of the gills of P. mesopotamicus revealed intralamellar monogenean and mixosporean cysts of Henneguya piaractus at several developmental stages over the entire (basal, median and distal) lamella. Intraepithelial cysts caused lamella dilation and deformity of adjacent lamellae. In P. lineatus gills, monogenean cysts were detected. In both host species, hyperplasia of the gill epithelium and structural disorganization of secondary lamellae was seen diffusely in the gills, leading to fused lamellae in the gills. In few cases, there was found mononuclear inflammatory cells and hemorrhagic focal points distally in the lamellae.

The temporal and spatial resource use among hummingbirds was studied over 13 months in an urban forest remnant (Prosa State Park: PSP) in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Hummingbird visitation was recorded at three ornithophilous and eleven non-ornithophilous species. Flower density was roughly constant during the study period, with the density of non-ornithophilous flowers being higher than that of ornithophilous ones. Mean values of nectar volume and concentration were similar between ornithophilous and non-ornithophilous species. Eight hummingbird species were observed at PSP: Amazilia fimbriata, Anthracothorax nigricollis, Chlorostilbon lucidus, Eupetomena macroura, Hylocharis chrysura, Florisuga fusca, Thalurania furcata and an unidentified species. Hummingbird visit frequencies to ornithophilous and non-ornithophilous flowers were similar. However, some non-ornithophilous species received a higher number of visits, which seems to be related to their large number of open flowers per plant per day. The number of feedings bouts of hummingbirds increased with the total number of flowers observed per focal plant. All recorded species of hummingbirds visited non-ornithophilous flowers, predominantly melittophilous and generalised entomophilous flowers. Hummingbird species recorded at PSP may be viewed as generalists, visiting a large number of non-ornithophilous species. Despite being an urban forest, PSP is relatively rich in hummingbird species, suggesting that it provides important shelter and foraging sites for hummingbirds in such an environment.

ABSTRACT The ecological restoration of degraded areas using seeds collected in forest remnants has shown significant results. This study was developed to verify the potential of seed rain to regenerate forest fragments of a Permanent Preservation Area (PPA) in the Apa River Basin which is located in the southwestern portion of the Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. To develop the study, we installed 25 collectors measuring 1 m2 each, which were systematically distributed on an area of 1.5ha. Seed gathering was conducted in a monthly basis throughout the year of 2013. A total of 26.411 propagules were identified and distributed among 50 species, 45 genera and 32 families. In terms of the propagules distribution, 70.51% were identified as trees, 22.8% as lianas, 6.5% as shrubs, 0.1 as herbaceous, 0.05% as palm and 0.05% could not be classified. The value for the Shannon Diversity Index was (H') = 1.67 and the Pielou Evenness index was (J) = 0.42. These results indicate that the seeds rain has low species diversity with the abundance of a few species. The overall results suggest that seed rain can be a potential technique for restoration of the PPAs and other forested areas. However, it is necessary to enhance the diversity of tree species.

This study evaluated the water quality of the Peri-Poçu Stream, Upper Paraná River basin, which is subjected to the effects of daily discharge of industrial effluent. Water samples were collected in August, September, November and December, 2013, at three sites (discharge of the effluent, upstream and downstream). At these sites, we determined temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and flow (Q). The pollutant load was estimated at each site to assess the role of the effluent as a polluter. From the ordination generated by the Principal Components Analysis we observed a clear spatial distinction, with the sites of discharge and downstream distinguished from the upstream site by the highest EC, BOD and pH, and by the lowest values of DO and Q. The mean values of the pollutant load were significantly different between sites, with the highest value found at the site of effluent discharge. The results highlight the need for efforts to better manage of water resources in the Mato Grosso do Sul State, especially those located in protected areas as is the case of the Peri-Poçu Stream in order to reduce costs to combat water pollution a and conserve natural resources.

The Pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus is the most captured fish species in the Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul State, and since 1994, its maximum sustainable yield had already been exceeded. Its capture is carried out only by hooks, as mesh gears are forbidden either for professional or for recreational fishing. The aim of this study was to determine selectivity for different hook sizes used in P. mesopotamicus fishing and to verify which sizes capture only adults. Data were collected in the rivers Miranda, Aquidauana, and Vermelho, in January, March, and April 2002. Six longlines with eight hook sizes were used and we adopted the hook opening as a measure related to selectivity. Different hooks captured individuals of the same length and their medians were similar, evidencing the great overlap among sizes. Regression results showed no significant relationship between ln[c2 (l)/c1 (l)] and total length of captured individuals. In addition, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test also did not detect significant differences in the size of captured fish. Several hypotheses, such as the selectivity models, shape of selection curves, scarcity of large fishes, and behavior are used in order to explain the absence of hook selectivity for this species. Size of recruitment for this gear was 28 cm of total length, when individuals are still immature.

In this study the structure and diversity of the endohelminth community, as well as its interactions with 73 specimens of Piaractus mesopotamicus are described. The fish were caught in Aquidauana and Miranda rivers, both located in the Pantantal region, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. A total of 608,788 specimens of helminthes were found, representing five species: Dadaytrema oxycephala, Chabaudinema americanum, Spectatus spectatus, Rondonia rondoni and Echinorhynchus jucundum. D. oxycephala was more prevalent (91.78%) followed by R. rondoni (73.97%). Simpson's index indicated dominance in the endohelminth infracommunities (C = 0.396) and D. oxycephala was considered central species. A total of 54 hosts had between 2 and 3 species of helminthes. The pairs of the species R. rondoni/D. oxycephala and S. spectatus/D. oxycephala showed significant positive correlation between abundances. There was a significant positive correlation between total length and abundance of S. spectatus (rs = -0.2467 and p = 0.0353). Abundance of R. rondoni between the periods of 1/2003 and 2/2003 (p = 0.0356) and 1/2003 and 4/2004 (p = 0.0009) was significantly different. There was significant prevalence of E. jucundum in the female hosts.

The study of the weight-length relationship of a fish species can be used to address several aspects that involve the distinction of small taxonomic units, providing basic information for the study of species biology, in addition, this relationship can also be used as quantitative indicator of the degree of health or well-being of the species in the environment. The objective of this study was to present unpublished data on the weight-length relationship (LWRs) for two species of fish. The fish were sampled in the months of January and July 2017 and January 2018 in rivers belonging to the Upper Paraná and Upper Paraguay basin along the MS-163, collected through sieves and trawls. 49 individuals were captured, distributed in two orders and two families, being 31 from Hisonotus francirochai and 18 from Roeboides descalvadensis. The results showed that the two species are within the expected for both parameters (a and b), even with a relatively low sample number. In addition, the data this study contribute with biological information for the species studied in this work.
