Carnival Time: Russian Higher Education and Science in the Postmodern Era

Since the end of the twentieth Century to the present, society has been undergoing deep systemic changes, which are accompanied by crisis phenomena. But the crisis affects society as a whole and science and education, as its components, in different ways. What hopes of the society should be associated with science and education? Communities of intellectuals (universities) go through the following stages in their formation: classical, modern, postmodern. Postmodernism brings polycentrism, fragmentation, deconstruction, stylization, collage, modeling and simulacra, and serialization to universities and research organizations. If classical and modernist views on intellectuals and Universities assumed that their activities were aimed at producing new knowledge and a new person, the postmodern transformation significantly changed academic communities and their environment. In order to better understand the essence of what happened, the authors refer to the phenomenon of carnival in the interpretation of M. M. Bakhtin. The most important sign of carnival is that everything is not what it seems. According to the sophists of antiquity, intellectual activity becomes a paid service. Is it appropriate to say that in a modern University teaching becomes a form of spiritual prostitution? Yes, it is appropriate, provided that the carnival of what is happening in the Russian University of the XXI century is determined by the change of roles and priorities of teachers, students, and support staff. The intensity and specificity of the carnival in a particular University depends on the specifics of the decision about the purpose of the University: issuance (sale) of a state-issued diploma, production of knowledge and/or training of qualified specialists. A serious external factor that reduces the authority of teachers and scientists is strengthening of trends towards relatively autonomous development of technologies and technics, which is clearly expressed in the phenomenon of the “revolution of interfaces”. Society is also changing, becoming the “society of the spectacle”, where the development of science, theater and professional sports has more and more similar characteristics. The crisis in science and education has always been a feature of postmodernism, an existential problem of intellectuals, which leads many of them to leave the walls of universities and scientific institutions.

This project aims to analyse the perceptions of university students about the use of language, as its correct use constitutes an important element for the development of gender equality. We question the idea that in university teaching, language is free of sexism and claim that this sexism is more evident in some branches of knowledge than in others. To this end, we will analyse the degree of importance attributed to language across different branches of knowledge and the identification of sexist expressions in daily use. The methodology used is based on a survey and interview. Different groups belonging to different degree courses of the academic communities of the Universities of Malaga and Seville participated in the research. Following this analysis, we reflect on the language use prevailing in the university environment since it constitutes a central space of action for its educational and socializing mission. El momento que viven las universidades ecuatorianas, se caracteriza por la búsqueda de una mejora significativa en el campo académico, investigativo y de vinculación con la comunidad. La intervención de algunas universidades por parte del CES, ha sido una medida que se constituye en oportunidad para lograr cubrir las expectativas de la sociedad y de las instancias superiores encargadas de velar por el desarrollo de la Academia. Las deficiencias encontradas develaron las causas principales que aquejan a estas comunidades: el pobre desarrollo de la investigación. En este marco, el presente trabajo se constituye en un tema pertinente, al proyectar una propuesta que se sustenta en la necesidad de formación de la docencia universitaria en el ámbito de la investigación. El análisis que se realiza a la propuesta, tiene un enfoque social pensado en función del servicio que presta la Universidad a la colectividad en aras de responder a la sociedad que concomitante al progreso mundial, apuntala su economía en el desarrollo del conocimiento. Considerar una estrategia para el desarrollo de las competencias investigativas en los docentes universitarios, ayudará a fortalecer la función investigativa, consecuentemente, se generará y crearán condiciones que permitan transferir tecnologías tendientes a mejorar las condiciones de vida del sector.  Palabras claves: Docencia universitaria, competencia investigativa, investigación, universidad, estrategia  Social view of the strategy for the formation of the research competence in the university professor    Abstract  The Ecuadorian universities are changing today and that is characterized by the search for a significant improvement in the academic and research fields and the link with the community. The intervention of some universities by the CES has been a measure which constitutes an opportunity to meet the society’s expectations and those of the higher level authorities to ensure the development of the university. The deficiencies found uncovered the main causes affecting these communities: the poor development of research. In this context, the present work constitutes a relevant topic, to project a proposal that is based on the need for training in the field of researching the university teachers. The analysis of the proposal has a social approach, which functions through the service provided by the University to the community in order to respond to the global society concomitant progress that seeks the development of knowledge while developing the world economy. To consider a strategy for the researching competence development in university teachers will help strengthening the researching function. The aim of this paper is to analyze the primary stress factors female professors at online universities are exposed to. The technique used for the prospective and exploratory analysis was the Delphi method. Two rounds of consultations were done with fourteen judges with broad experience in health and safety at work and university teaching who reached a consensus of opinion regarding a list of nine psychosocial risk factors. Among the most important risk factors, mental overload, time pressure, the lack of a schedule, and emotional exhaustion were highlighted. These risk factors are related to the usage and expansion of information and communication technology (ICT) and to the university system itself, which requires initiating more research in the future in order to develop the intervention programs needed to fortify the health of the affected teachers and protect them from stress and other psychosocial risks.

Occupational fields and career prospects of economic geographers. Empirical evidence from a graduate follow-up study at the Leibniz Universität Hannover and conclusions for teaching at universities. The employability of the alumni has become an important aspect of university teaching in Germany since bachelor and master courses were introduced some years ago. This also applies for the university education of economic geographers. The paper demonstrates the increased and still increasing relevance of employability for economic geographers studying at German universities. Based on data for 295 economic geography graduates from the Leibniz Universität Hannover it is shown that such alumni have rather good career opportunities to achieve both high income and satisfying work conditions. Adequate specialization of the curriculum, excellence in teaching and research, and a close relationship between university teaching (and teachers) and the professional world outside the university are important conditions for successful alumni.

The use of active methodologies in the university is a priority to achieve higher quality learning. One of these methodologies with the greatest potential for training in competencies is Project-Oriented Learning (PLA), using it in an innovative way. Associating the use of this methodology with the objectives of sustainable development, which have become even more important since the Pandemic by COVID-19, can be a good idea to achieve a more sustained and situated learning. The aim of this study is to find out to what extent research on teaching innovation with Project-Oriented Learning is associated with the Sustainable Development Goals. A systematic review was carried out as indicated by PRISMA through the following databases: WOS and Scopus. WOS found 15 articles on AoP and 6 on Project-Oriented Learning and sustainability. In Scopus 2 were found in 2019. The main results show that in the University, especially in the branches of engineering, AoP is widely used, however, it is rarely related to SDGs. Among the conclusions, we highlight the need for research on project-oriented learning and sustainable development goals.

Integration of science, higher education, innovative entrepreneurship contributes to the solution of topical problems caused by global challenges. The article shows that universities integrate scientific, educational, innovative activities both within their structural units and in cooperation with other participants in regional innovative systems. The aim is to identify the trends in multichannel funding of universities in the regions, which creates the conditions for the integration of educational and research activities, and summarize the experience of universities that have created strategic academic units (SAUs) as one of the forms of integrating science and higher education. Based on the statistical analysis of financial receipts to universities from various sources in 2015 and 2019 (form VPO_2), the trends and structure of the funding distribution by type of educational and research activities in the regions of the Russian Federation were compared. It has been revealed that educational activities dominate in universities, accounting for about 70% of all income, and research activities 12–13%. Regional cases of the universities (ITMO, NNU, TSU, NSU, SFU) were analyzed. They integrated science and education in the form of SAUs. The cases were prepared on the basis of a content analysis of roadmaps for the period 2016–2020, interviews, and other open information. The analysis has showed that the organizational model of each SAU is created on the basis of the uniqueness and competitiveness of the university’s scientific and educational specialization by mechanisms that ensure the integration of the educational process and research activities through the involvement of students, graduate students in research and innovative projects. It is concluded that the flexibility and versatility of training programs and research at the university in the SAU format is formed in cooperation with many participants in regional innovation systems, which leads to the demand for its services by enterprises in the regions of the European part of the country and Siberia. The synergy of educational, research and innovation activities is achieved within the framework of both one university and through its network interaction with other Russian and international universities, scientific organizations, and enterprises. The experience of creating SAUs can be used by regional administrations, corporations in the development of world-class scientific and educational centers within the framework of the Science national project and national research and flagship universities of the strategic academic leadership program.
