The sonographic appearance of the normal abdominal lymph nodes in adult dogs has been well described, but the data in puppies are scarce and of poor quality. The aim of the current study was to evaluate any differences in abdominal lymph node sonographic measurements in puppies of various sizes and to determine whether any differences were correlated with growth and weight gain during the first 10 weeks of life. By an approach based on prospective and serial measurements, length, width and thickness of jejunal, medial iliac and hypogastric nodes were obtained in twenty-one healthy puppies of various sizes, at six (T0), eight (T1) and ten (T2) weeks of age. The relationship between body weight and length, width and thickness of lymph nodes was evaluated using a Pearson correlation analysis. An ANOVA test was used to compare the measurements at different ages. Jejunal and iliac lymph nodes were the largest in large breed dogs. In large-sized puppies only the length of the jejunal lymph nodes correlated positively with width and body weight. Length of medial iliac lymph nodes correlated positively with width and body weight in all three sizes. None of the measurements of hypogastric lymph nodes were related to body weight. In large-sized puppies jejunal and iliac lymph nodes increased in length and width with age; in medium-sized puppies only iliac lymph nodes increased; in small-sized puppies jejunal and iliac lymph nodes significantly decreased in length and thickness. In conclusion, the lymph node sizes in young animals are directly related to body weight and do not decrease with growth during the first 10 weeks of life, except in small-sized puppies.

ABSTRACT Utilizing a transdermal method of inoculation developed in our laboratory, the duration of infection of Salmonella in the peripheral lymph nodes of steers was examined. Thirty-six Holstein steers (mean body weight of 137 kg) were inoculated with Salmonella Montevideo (day 0) on each lower leg and both sides of the back and abdomen. Calves were euthanized beginning at 6 h and subsequently on each of days 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 11, 14, and 21 postinoculation (four animals each time). The subiliac, popliteal, and superficial cervical (prescapular) lymph nodes were collected and cultured (quantitatively and qualitatively) for the challenge strain of Salmonella. The challenge strain was detected via direct culture within the lymph nodes at 6 h postinoculation and on each subsequent necropsy date. Salmonella levels in lymph node were 0.8 to 1.8 log CFU/g. Lymph nodes were generally positive after enrichment culture throughout the experiment. Salmonella elimination appeared to begin approximately 14 days postinoculation. However, elimination was not completed by day 21; therefore, a second experiment was conducted identical to the first except that the time from inoculation to necropsy was extended. Salmonella was recovered via direct culture on each of the necropsy days, and results in general were similar to those of experiment I, except that on days 20, 24, and 28 isolates from serogroups C2 and E1 were identified in addition to the inoculation strain C1 in multiple animals. The data from both experiments indicate that after a single inoculation event, Salmonella would be completely cleared by approximately 28 days. Further research with expanded times between inoculation and necropsy is required for verification.

This article examines the relationship between learning and behavioural evaluation among religious officers in Malaysia after attending the Manual on HIV/AIDS in Islam Training Programmes organized by the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM). The training programmes were implemented to deliver the most accurate and the latest information on HIV / AIDS as well as to train religious officers in Malaysia to address the issues among Muslims. The training programmes apply the theoretical and practical activities where participants had the opportunity to carry out outreach activities with People Living with HIV / AIDS (ODHA). Quantitative methods through questionnaires were used to obtain data. A total of 350 religious officers who had attended the training programmes were selected as respondents by simple random sampling technique. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between the learning and behavioural evaluation. The results of the Pearson correlation analysis found that there was a significant relationship between learning evaluation in terms of the information obtained from programmes’ contents and behaviour evaluation with r = 0.489 and sig = 0.000 (p <0.05) at the medium positive range.. While the relationship between learning evaluation in terms of the information obtained from outreach activities with behavioural evaluation showed a strong positive correlation with the strength values obtained were r = 0.539 and sig = 0.000 (p <0.05). This analysis shows that the information acquired through the training program Manual Islam and HIV / AIDS has been successful in changing the behaviour of religious officers’ awareness in terms of the role of dakwah to ODHA. Repeated sprint ability (RSA) is typically used for speed-endurance and agility-endurance training and assessment. RSA is preferred as it mimics actual performance during competition. RSA test involves straight sprint and quick turning movements. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the relationship between height and body weight measurements on RSA performance, as height and weight may influence the mechanical properties of it. Ten male rugby players (body weight 72.99 ± 14.29 kg, height 169 ± 5.55 cm) selected for Perak SUKMA 2018 team were assessed during centralized training ~9 months prior to their competition.  Body weight and height were measured using standard laboratory weight and height scales prior to the RSA test. RSA were hand-timed for 5 repetitions x 2 sets x 60 seconds rest in between repetitions x 5 minutes rest in-between set. The sprints were performed in the evenings, on grass surface with participants wearing full playing attire. Standardized pre-game warm-up and cooling down were performed. Data recorded was analyzed statistically using a t-test comparison for set one versus set two performances. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the relationship between anthropometric measures and the RSA test. RSA performance has a negative correlation with the athletes’ height (r= -0.233 set 1, r = -0.435 set 2) and body weight (r= -0.556 set 1, r= -0.629 set 2). RSA performance was significantly different between set 1 and set 2 (p=0.001), with set 1 performance better than set 2. Body height and body weight did not influence RSA performance. Athletes involved did not have adequate speed-agility-endurance needed. In practical, selecting athletes based on their body height and body weight with the assumption that taller and heavier athletes may perform better may not be suitable for this kind of sport. On the other hand, using RSA to test and develop the speed-agility-endurance ability for rugby players is suggested.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by structural and functional disorder of the kidney with irreversible and gradual characteristics with one of the modalities of renal replacement therapy such as hemodialysis (HD). The role of inflammation in HD patients by uremic toxin and dialysis can be assessed by the marker of High Sensitive C Reactive Protein (HsCRP). Several studies have examined the relationship between HsCRP and red cell distribution width (RDW) in regular HD patients which leads to increase patient morbidity and mortality, but until now, there has been no study in Indonesia regarding the correlation between HsCRP and RDW in regular HD patients. This study aims to determine the correlation HsCRP as a marker of inflammation and RDW values in regular HD patients. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in Regular HD patients at Dialysis Unit-H. Adam Malik General Hospital. A total of 20 subjects were included. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship of HsCRP, ureum, creatinin, hemoglobin, and eGFR to RDW. Results: There were 20 Regular HD patients analyzed. The proportion of patients with increased RDW was 80%. In pearson correlation test, there is a strong correlation between HsCRP and RDW (r= 0.667, p<0.001). Discussion: Majority of regular HD patients at H. Adam Malik General Hospital were assessed with increased RDW. Pearson correlation analysis revealed HsCRP was significantly associated with RDW. Conclusion: Increased RDW was found in 80% of regular HD patients at H. Adam malik General Hospital. From pearson correlation analysis, we found HsCRP was significantly associated with RDW. Keywords: inflammation, high sensitive c reactive protein, red blood cell distribution width, regular hemodialysis.

Observations that dendritic cells (DCs) constitutively enter afferent lymphatic vessels in many organs and that DCs in some tissues, such as the lung, turnover rapidly in the steady state have led to the concept that a major fraction of lymph node DCs are derived from migratory DCs that enter the lymph node through upstream afferent lymphatic vessels. We used the lysozyme M–Cre reporter mouse strain to assess the relationship of lymph node and nonlymphoid organ DCs. Our findings challenge the idea that a substantial proportion of lymph node DCs derive from the upstream tissue during homeostasis. Instead, our analysis suggests that nonlymphoid organ DCs comprise a major population of DCs within lymph nodes only after introduction of an inflammatory stimulus.

e15189 Background: Clinical data in multiple tumors has demonstrated that the inadvertent radiation of circulating lymphocytes causes grade III-IV lymphopenia which is associated with worse outcomes in cancer patients and failure to respond to immunologic interventions. Murine data from our lab demonstrated that radiation to the brain results in striking changes in the anatomy and cellularity of distant unirradiated lymph nodes. This study was designed to understand the relationship between local radiation and the depletion of distant unirradiated lymph nodes in humans which has not been previously studied. Methods: Adult women with breast cancer who had undergone prior mastectomy with pathology, labs, and radiation data available at our institution were enrolled at the time of their deep inferior epigastric perforator artery (DIEP) flap reconstruction. During reconstruction, a single abdominal lymph node was extracted, and subsequently formalin fixed. The pre- and post-treatment lymph nodes of radiated and non-radiated patients were presented in a blinded manner to the hematopathologist. The pathologist described each lymph node and graded the lymph node density as (1) low, (2) low-normal, (3) normal, or (4) high. Results: Seven women have been enrolled (median age 50; range 31-55) with AJCC tumor stages from 1a – 3b (five are hormone positive, and two are triple negative). The reconstruction was completed on average 488.71 + 224.57 days after initial mastectomy. Three of the women received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and five received adjuvant chemotherapy. Five of the seven women had received radiation (mean 50.9 + 5.6 Gy). The baseline median LN density score in all patients was 4 (range 1-4), with a post mean LN density of 1.2 + 0.4 in the radiation group compared to a mean score of 3 + 1.4 in the control group. Conclusions: Systemic lymphocyte counts remain relatively stable but lymph node density is markedly lower than baseline in 80% of patients who received chest wall irradiation consistent with data from animal model studies. It is important to note that this effect on the nodes is seen long after the radiation has been completed. [Table: see text]

ABSTRACT The sternal lymph nodes receive drainage from a wide variety of structures in the thoraco-abdominal region. Evaluation of these lymph nodes is essential, especially in cancer patients. Computed tomography (CT) can detect sternal lymph nodes more accurately than radiography or ultrasonography, and the criteria of the sternal lymphadenopathy are unknown. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe the CT characteristics of the sternal lymph nodes in dogs considered unlikely to have lymphadenopathy. The ratio of the short axis dimension of the sternal lymph nodes to the thickness of the second sternebra was also investigated. At least one sternal lymph node was identified in each of the 152 dogs included in the study. The mean long axis and short axis dimensions were 0.700 cm and 0.368 cm, respectively. The mean ratio of the sternal lymph nodes to the second sternebrae was 0.457, and the 95% prediction interval ranged from 0.317 to 0.596 (almost a fixed value independent of body weight). These findings will be useful when evaluating sternal lymphadenopathy using CT.
