This article presents the results of the questionnaire and comparison, which allows determining the interest of first-year students in different types of physical activity at the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering. The purpose of the study is to determine students’ interest in different types of physical activity offered as part of physical education in a higher educational institution. According to their preferences, first-year students are suggested to choose either team sports (football, mini-football, volleyball, basketball), individual sports (table tennis, athletics, arm wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, swimming, chess, and checkers), or fitness activities for physical education classes in an educational institution. The comparative analysis of the obtained data demonstrates the pattern of an increase from 65.1% in the 2015-2016 academic year to 71.0% in the 2020-2021 academic year in the number of young men, who have chosen and are engaged in a certain sport in an educational institution, and decrease from 34.9% in the 2015-2016 academic year to 29.0% in the 2020-2021 academic year in the number of young women interested in physical activity at the university. Within five years, the number of young men choosing team sports has decreased from 75.6% in the 2015-2016 academic year to 63.3% in the 2020-2021 academic year, and the number of young men interested in individual sports has increased from 24.4 % in the 2015-2016 academic year to 36.7% in the 2020-2021 academic year. Fitness classes remain the most popular among female students, although there has been a decrease in the number of young women choosing it for physical education from 83.3% to 71.8% over five years. Team sports are gaining more popularity among first-year female students with only 5.3% choosing them as part of physical education in an educational institution in the 2015-2016 academic year, to 10.2% in the 2020-2021 academic year. A gradual interest in individual sports from 11.4% to 18.0% is observed in young women over five years.

Intensive renewal of the socio-economic, scientific and technical spheres and the spiritual life of society determines high requirements for the capacity of the individual. Graduates of higher educational institutions determine the future of our country, so they must not only have a high level of professional readiness, but also be physically enduring, efficient and healthy. These personality traits are formed and improved during the student years by means of physical education. Physical education in higher educational institutions is an integral part of education. The level of their physical development and health depends on the quality of the organization and conduct of classes with students. At present, the health of the younger generation is of serious concern. Numerous works of modern researchers point to an increase in the level of diseases and focus on a decrease in the functional resistance of the body of students to physical activity. The subject of the research is the methodology of using means of physical culture and health-improving orientation in physical education classes. The aim of the research is to determine the influence of physical culture and health-improving orientation classes on the physical fitness of first-year students. Research objectives: to conduct an analysis of scientific and methodological literature and advanced pedagogical experience in relation to the topic under study; to determine the level of physical fitness of female students, using complex testing and to reveal the dynamics of indicators of physical fitness; to develop a program of physical education classes to improve the level of physical fitness and health of female students; to experimentally check the developed training methodology and determine its feasibility of introducing it into the educational process in physical education. In the course of organizing and conducting a scientific experiment, the following methods were used: analysis and generalization of scientific and methodological literature, pedagogical observations, control testing, mathematical processing of results. The study involved first-year students who study at the National University "Odesa Law Academy" and do not play sports. In the course of the experiment, a program of physical education classes was developed, which included sets of exercises for the development of physical qualities, as well as a health-improving orientation. These complexes were used in each physical education lesson twice a week on a schedule. The study made it possible to draw the following conclusions. The analysis of the results shows that at the initial stage of the research the majority of female students showed low results in all the tests. After conducting classes according to our methodology, at the second stage of the experiment, the results for some tests improved significantly. Thus, the proposed program of health related training had a positive impact on the results of physical fitness of female students.

Recently, the discipline "Physical Education" is losing its popularity, position, prestige among pupils and students. The younger generation uses all the opportunities in order to avoid physical exertion within the framework of the subject matter both in schools and in higher educational institutions. There are enough reasons for such behavior: attitude to physical education and sports in the family, outdated scheme of conducting and stereotyped lessons, insufficient practical qualifications of teachers, lack of creative teaching and modern directions in the educational process. In this situation, young people have extremely few motives for regular, conscious attendance of physical education classes and effective work on it. Taking into account all the above, the task of physical education teachers is to raise the prestige of the discipline “Physical Education” and give motives to students to get physical activity both within the academic discipline and outside educational institutions. In this work, we tried to identify ways to increase student motivation in this matter.

PURPOSE: The aim of the paper is to present the results of a recent research survey (February 2021) in a broader context of the issue to determine whether university students devote themselves as much as possible to specific sports and physical activities even at the time of the ongoing pandemic associated with the spread of COVID-19, i.e. at a time when the possibilities of sports and physical activities are limited, and the contact Physical Education lessons (hereinafter referred to as PE) are cancelled at schools.METHODS: To meet the objectives of the research survey, the method of questioning – an online questionnaire – was chosen. The total number of the university students who were addressed was 1164, 530 first-year students from all seven faculties of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava (hereinafter referred to as VSB-TUO) answered. The questionnaires were subjected to the statistical classification of the first-level data. Another method was the comparative method of working with documents, comparing with the results of comparable questionnaire surveys from 2015 and 2018, and relevant scientific discussion in this contestRESULTS: The results of the research confirmed that first-year students of all VSB-TUO faculties, who as graduates of the relevant secondary school could no longer complete the subject Physical Education due to pandemic measures, preferred unorganized physical activities in accordance with the situation, such as walks, including walking the dog. 34.8% of respondents answered that they “did not miss sport” or that they “were not interested in sport at all”. A high percentage of respondents (44.3%) admitted that they “did not miss” organized Physical Education lessons “at all”, while some (31.3%) stated that thanks to the subject Physical Education, they were able to play sports “at least once a week”.CONCLUSION: Due to the high number of interviewed first-year students of VSB-TUO, it can be assumed that we would reach similar results in a vast population of peers, and the findings can be generalized. The study summarizes the latest reflections on impersonal forms of teaching of Physical Education on the motivation and intensity of sports and physical activities within the general level of foreign surveys as well. Using the example of a higher military educational institution, we conducted an analysis of the prevalence of diseases according to ICD-10 by years of study (n = 3381). Features among local students and visitors were: in long-term trends, an increase in ear diseases (more significant among visitors) and an equal rate of decrease in skin diseases and subcutaneous tissue, injuries; in the first year, significant differences in three, 2–4 courses — in two classes of diseases, in the pathogenesis of which the state of resistance of the organism is significant (some infectious and parasitic diseases, diseases of the respiratory system, skin and subcutaneous tissue); excess incidence of local first-year students and newcomers over rates in other courses, respectively, for classes 5 and 8 of diseases; differences in the incidence rate for adjacent years of study, which is important for determining the period of adaptation to the conditions of training and adaptation against the background of acclimatization. In local students, the prevalence of diseases in the first two courses was significantly higher than by 4–5 (data from the third to fifth courses did not differ), but for disease classes XI, XIII, XIX, prevalence persisted from 1–2 years, X, XII — up to 2–3 years For visiting students, the prevalence of diseases from the first to the fourth year exceeded that in the next year. For classes I, VII, VIII, XIII and XIX, the excess persisted for 1–2 years, XI — at least 3 years, X — 4 years. Research in an initially healthy team allows us to judge the process of students' adaptation to the learning environment, as well as adaptation against the background of acclimatization. Research is promising in other regions of the country; among students studying at universities of other departments. This will provide the basis for planning preventive measures in youth groups to preserve their health and improve professional training.
