Observations have also shown that regular use of games in foreign language lessons has had a positive effect on students’ interpersonal relationships. Most students (86.6%) confirmed that in the process of a game they become more active in communication, do not focus on the fear of making a mistake and are more prone to spontaneous speech. 83.3% of respondents noted that during the game, they significantly reduce the level of anxiety in the process of FL communication.

This study aims to find out the role of games in promoting students’ willingness to communicate (WTC) and their teachers’ attitude toward it. In order to collect the data, the researchers employed a 28-item questionnaire which was given to 60 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in an English institute. Then, the students were randomly divided into two groups of 30 learners functioning as control and experimental groups. The students in the experimental group received games in their language lessons and classes, while control group learners did not. At the end of the term, the same questionnaire was given to the students to know if playing games had a significant impact on their WTC. In addition, the teachers were asked to answer a 30-item questionnaire to investigate their attitudes toward playing games in language classes. The results showed that most of the teachers in this study believe that games have a positive influence on the students’ attitudes towards learning English and that using them in class serves many educational purposes. In addition, games played a significant role in improving the EFL leaners’ willingness to communicate. In the light of these findings, the researchers suggested using games as energizers and practical activities at the end of class not only to improve enthusiasm for learning, but also to improve the learners’ WTC.

The paper deals with the technology for the creation and use of an individual multimedia bilingual thesaurus as a tool for the integration of the foreign language and engineering disciplines at a technical university. The stages of designing and testing an individual thesaurus in vocational English language classes with students, majoring in automobile engineering, are described. Building on the achievements in thesaurus modelling in integrative foreign languages and professional disciplines teaching, the author presents her own technology for creating an individual English-Russian multimedia thesaurus, devoted to the automobile design, and the sequence of formation of speech skills in foreign language communication of engineers on its basis. The process of creating such thesaurus takes place at two levels of integration: intra-subject (interrelationship of all types of speech activity) and interdisciplinary (didactic synthesis of language and engineering disciplines). At the same time, the author outlines the areas of the near and further integration of the discipline «Professional English» and engineering disciplines, which is aimed at developing interdisciplinary thinking of engineering students. The author emphasizes the fact that successful teaching cross-cultural engineering communication requires outlining the content of learning situations, the modelling of which is the English language instructor’s responsibility. In order to organize this work, students are supposed to create a contextual part of the thesaurus from which the instructor singles out speech patterns. The selected speech patterns are mastered in a series of exercises and tasks prior to learning situations. The conclusion outlines ways of the further interdisciplinary integration by means of thesaurus modelling of professional subject areas.

This study examines the impact of perceived foreign language proficiency on hybrid culture building in multicultural teams. Hybrid culture includes a mutually shared set of norms, communication patterns, problem-solving approaches, and synergistic task coordination that result from the diverse cultural backgrounds of the team members. Language is the main vehicle for communication and plays a major role in social interaction and therefore hybrid culture building. We argue that the level of perceived language proficiency of multicultural team members influences hybrid culture building; consequently, adequate language skills lead not only to an efficient task solution but are also an important factor in creating interpersonal relationships and building a shared culture. Our empirical analysis supports the positive influence of language proficiency in hybrid teams; however, foreign language proficiency is more influential on cognitively oriented areas of multicultural teamwork than on affective ones.
