Under development of globalization, there is an essential question in each field of education regarding balance of traditional Latvian cultural values and multiculturalism. Despite plenty of activities performed in Latvia in the field of multicultural education, in the subject of home economics and technologies the multicultural education has mostly appeared as bilingual education in national minority schools. There are many opportunities in multicultural education and Latvian traditional culture that have not been used in the acquisition of home economics and technologies. The aim of this research is to evaluate the educational opportunities of Latvian traditional culture and multicultural education during the process of mastering textile technologies. In the article conception of Latvian traditional culture and multicultural education is analysed and its determinative aspects are examined. A case study has been performed in order to analyse and evaluate the content of textile study course and the learning process as well as students’ concluding tasks regarding teaching methodology of textile and textile articles made by pupils within the frame of State Olympiad of household, home economics and technologies called “Ethnography”. In all courses designed for the prospective teachers of home economics and technologies as well as household elements of traditional and multicultural education are included. When acquiring traditional culture, textile techniques, forms and elements of composition, teaching of colours and materials, very often comparisons, illustrations and explanations in terms of traditional culture of other nations are used for comprehension of the subject. Specific tasks are made for acquiring culture of Latvia and other nations. Students make copies of fragments of completed articles and learn the technologies of making traditional articles. Several students in their graduation papers have studied the opportunities of acquiring traditional values of Latvian and other nationalities’ cultures in studies of home economics and technologies. The analysis of works completed in the Olympiad „Ethnography” shows that students make varied creative compositions, using ethnographic symbols as source of inspiration, and implement them in various textile techniques. At the end of the article proposals and conclusions regarding development of Latvian traditional culture and multicultural education studies for the prospective teachers of home economics and technologies are drawn. It is necessary to improve the content of home economics and technologies’ subject as well as the methodological approach in order to implement both traditional and multicultural education in schools and high-schools in the studies of the prospective teachers of home economics and technologies.

This study was conducted to investigate the perceptions of pre-service teachers majoring in English at the department of English Language Teaching (ELT)—Tishk International University Education Faculty in Iraq at the level of knowledge and attitude. Studies related to the concept of multiculturalism are significant as being discussed recently in our globalized world and Mesopotamia in Iraq. The present study was planned in 2018–2019 academic year by using case study design within the framework of qualitative research method. The study was carried out with 90 final year students (48 females and 42 males). The subject participated in the study on a voluntary basis. The data of the study were obtained by using semi-structured interview technique. The data obtained from the study was collected under certain codes and themes by content analysis. As a result of the analysis of the data, it was determined that pre-service teachers had both right and wrong learning about the concepts of multiculturalism and multicultural education, and their attitude levels were both positive and negative. In this regard, it is thought that it may be beneficial for prospective teachers to receive a training in the vocational education process related to multiculturalism and multicultural education. Conducting the studies to be planned for multicultural education applications by revealing different variables will enable the subject to be evaluated from different perspectives and will be beneficial for the enrichment of the literature on the subject.

In this article, a critical and methodological approach is offered concerning the subject of manipulation and translation in the realm of the audiovisual. Taking the potentialities unleashed by the cultural turn in Translation Studies as a starting point, the paper first provides an overview of the main hurdles and issues at stake when adopting a line of enquiry centred around the realisation that the way in which cultural values are translated depends not only on linguistic asymmetries between languages but also on fundamental decisions based on power, dominance, and ideology. As part of a debate that could prove fruitful in the world of audiovisual translation (AVT), the concept of manipulation is discussed in detail and a distinction between technical and ideological manipulation is put forward. After considering the special case of censorship and some of the new developments in the use of subtitling as a tool for local empowerment, it is suggested that the boundaries of research into AVT should be pushed beyond its traditionally parochial linguistic sphere by focussing more on unmasking the rationale behind ideologically motivated changes and by contextualising them within a wider socio-cultural environment.

The article presents a methodological approach to studying iterative processes in the school course of geometry, by the example of constructing a Koch snowflake fractal curve and calculating a few characteristics of it. The interactive creative environment 1C:MathKit is chosen to visualize the method discussed. By performing repetitive constructions and algebraic calculations using ICT tools, students acquire a steady skill of work with geometric objects of various levels of complexity, comprehend the possibilities of mathematical interpretation of iterative processes in practice, and learn how to understand the dialectical unity between finite and infinite parameters of flat geometric figures. When students are getting familiar with such contradictory concepts and categories, that replenishes their experience of worldview comprehension of the subject areas they study through the concept of “big ideas”. The latter allows them to take a fresh look at the processes in the world around. The article is a matter of interest to schoolteachers of computer science and mathematics, as well as university scholars who teach the course “Concepts of modern natural sciences”.

The aspiration to keep the synergy in relations between majorities and minorities repeatedly emerges as the cause of conflicts in social relations. It is also a subject of the interest of the multicultural education, particularly in countries of Eastern Europe, building contacts with the culturally and ethnically diverse groups to a wider scale. Relations in culturally, religiously and ethnic diverse societies, are becoming more and more related to the personal attitudes and a given policy. These issues acquire in the prison circumstances even greater significance, as given moods and personal attitudes of the prison staff create the pragmatic aspects of the professional activities addressed to the sentenced. Additionally, the key role is played by the quality of the penitentiary policy and the legal culture. The article presents the comparative analysis of the research carried out in 2016 amongst the prison staff in Poland. The subject of the research concerned attitudes that influence the decisive processes. The personal relations have been analyzed in the context of the relation with the sentenced Muslims. The aim of the research was not only to reveal the quality of the decisions concerning the sentenced Muslims, but also the sources of such decisions. The latter, in consequence, may shift, as the research results prove, towards synergy or discrimination. The diversification of the discrimination was one of the intriguing aspects, disclosed at various levels that not always explicitly concerned the discrimination of the minority.

Chapter 1 introduces the subject of institutional memory of strategic errors, discusses why it matters for international organizations (IOs) that engage in crisis management and reviews the book’s argument, competing explanations and methodological approach. One strategic error in the mandate or planning of an operation can increase the likelihood of casualties on the battlefield. Knowledge of past errors can help prevent future ones. The chapter explores an empirical puzzle; there remain key differences between how one expects IOs to learn and observed behavior. Moreover, scholars have largely treated institutional memory as a given without explaining how it develops. From relevant scholarship, the chapter identifies limitations of three potential explanations. The chapter then introduces a new argument for how IOs develop institutional memory. Subsequent sections describe research design and explain why NATO is selected as the domain of study. Last, the chapter identifies major contributions to literature and describes the book’s structure.

AbstractThe ‘family house’ has played a major role within the urbanisation processes that have been transforming the Italian landscape since the 1960s. It is a common feature of the widespread settlements that are part of what has been labelled the ‘diffuse city’ and was the subject of numerous studies during the 1990s. More than 20 years later, this paper returns to the topic of the Italian family house using a renewed methodological approach to describe relevant changes. The hypothesis here is that in order to grasp the tensions affecting ‘family houses’ in today’s context of demographic transition and increased imbalances between dynamic and declining areas, and to contemplate their future, the qualitative gaze adopted by scholars in the 1990s must be integrated with other investigative tools, focusing on demographic change, uses, and the property values of buildings. Using this perspective, the paper provides a series of ‘portraits’ rooted in four meaningful territorial contexts, portraits which may help scholars to redefine their imagery associated with family house and be useful for dedicated building policies.

Effective quality management practices are critical to successful project delivery. However, the quality challenges in developing countries such as Nigeria, which is the focus of this research, have been a concern to construction practitioners and other interested parties such as clients and regulatory bodies. Some scholars suggest that part of these challenges can be attributed to ineffective quality management systems; thus, leading to consequences such as building collapse, poor organisational/industry reputation, poor/lack of traceability, poor documentation process, and lack of planned audit. This research aims to develop a contextual model that is intended to improve the culture of quality that can facilitate effective quality management practices in construction organisations in Nigeria. A mixed (quantitative and qualitative) methodological approach was deployed based on a pragmatic research philosophy paradigm. A questionnaire (quantitative) survey was adopted to gather data and results from the data analysis and reviewed literature were discussed, and the findings supported the development of a conceptual quality management model in construction as the outcome of this research. The designed model comprises eight integrated components. The model is a quality system that construction organisations can use: to identify some typical barriers hindering effective QMSs implementation; to assist them to develop cultural values that can drive effective QMSs implementation; to undertake effective QMSs practices as they relate to construction, and to recognise the potential results and longer-term benefits obtainable from implementing effective QMSs. The model was evaluated and validated by professional construction practitioners and academic experts for its usefulness and applicability. Future study should focus on the practical validation of the model. Keywords: ISO 9001; Quality Management Practices; Quality Management System.

Theories of social collapse are not only the views that characterize ?societies deep in crisis?, but rather an expression of lack of belief in prosperity and central importance of the civilization in which we live. These theories follow processes of degradation of human societies, the decline of civilization`s powers and the loss of its cultural values resulting in their complete disappearance. This paper defines the subject of study and provides an overview of the history of these theories and their contemporary types by taking the main causes of collapse criteria as the basis for theory building. After the review of contemporary multi-factor analysis of collapse, mainly within the science of complex systems, full attention is focused on two atypical, yet very productive, contemporary theories of social collapse that are elaborated in detail: Jared Diamond`s theory, which studies social collapses by observing relations of other variables that can lead to collapse with environmental problems as central; and Peter Turchin`s theory which, revitalizing with modern scientific achievements Ibn Khaldun`s classical theory of ?asabia? (group feeling, spirit of community), sees social collapses as a consequence of the decline of cohesion provided by asabia. The final part of the work gives a critical review of these two theories and their relation with classical theories of social collapse (primarily those of Arnold Toynbee) and points to their mutual productive complementarity.
