The topicality of the study is caused by the fact that the entry of Ukrainian society into the European space imposes appropriate requirements for the new generation specialists’ training. To achieve this goal, we used the following methods: to collect empirical survey data (student questionnaires and interviews with teachers), a statement experiment to find out the real state of the problem under investigation, a search experiment to implement the bilingual approach in the study of foreign language and its control. The experiment was participated by students of the 1st and 2nd years of study of non-linguistic specialties students at higher educational institutions during four terms, the study was carried out in three stages. At the first stage the level of preparation of the first-year students of non-linguistic specialties was studied. The results demonstrated that more than half of the respondents had difficulties in mastering the material. At the second stage of the study, a search experiment was conducted using a bilingual approach. In the course of the effectiveness approach checking, it was recorded that students demonstrated a sufficient level of foreign language proficiency due to the systematic use of the bilingual approach while studying basic disciplines.

The article deals with the notion of ‘pre-university training’, its role and significance in young people’s start in professional training in higher education have been considered. Herewith, the role of pre-university training in lowering the risks which arise in this process has been stated. The most typical risks, belonging to the category of social risks, have been considered, their classification has been provided. It has been noted that such risks are objectively determined with a new social environment where young people get into while entering higher educational establishments, also with new forms of learning activities which are often unfamiliar to the current school graduates. The main forms of work with the prospective students in the system of pre-university training have been analysed, their impact on more effective adaptation, first of all of first year students to their learning in a modern higher educational establishment, has been shown. Such analysis has been undertaken based on the experience of Kharkiv University of Humanities ‘People’s Ukrainian Academy’ as for organizational activities of the Pre-University Training Centre during thirty years. The transformation of pre-university training system in conditions of admission changes in higher educational establishments has been considered, namely the increase of educational component in general subjects within the training process for external independent evaluation of education quality.

The shift of higher education system to the new federal state standards for education (FGOS3++) is connected with the changes in the curriculum and  terminological shift from so called general cultural competences to key competences. Key competences are the basis for professional competences and lay the foundation for further  personal and professional development of a specialist. Recent research in  teaching foreign languages in higher education institutions have been aimed at the development of professional competences. However the  empirical data show that first-year students of non-linguistic departments do  not have school level command of the foreign language. The article considers the potential of the foreign language to form not only communicative  competence in the foreign language but to form key competences,  mentioned in the new federal standard, regardless of the initial level of language competence.

Using the example of a higher military educational institution, we conducted an analysis of the prevalence of diseases according to ICD-10 by years of study (n = 3381). Features among local students and visitors were: in long-term trends, an increase in ear diseases (more significant among visitors) and an equal rate of decrease in skin diseases and subcutaneous tissue, injuries; in the first year, significant differences in three, 2–4 courses — in two classes of diseases, in the pathogenesis of which the state of resistance of the organism is significant (some infectious and parasitic diseases, diseases of the respiratory system, skin and subcutaneous tissue); excess incidence of local first-year students and newcomers over rates in other courses, respectively, for classes 5 and 8 of diseases; differences in the incidence rate for adjacent years of study, which is important for determining the period of adaptation to the conditions of training and adaptation against the background of acclimatization. In local students, the prevalence of diseases in the first two courses was significantly higher than by 4–5 (data from the third to fifth courses did not differ), but for disease classes XI, XIII, XIX, prevalence persisted from 1–2 years, X, XII — up to 2–3 years For visiting students, the prevalence of diseases from the first to the fourth year exceeded that in the next year. For classes I, VII, VIII, XIII and XIX, the excess persisted for 1–2 years, XI — at least 3 years, X — 4 years. Research in an initially healthy team allows us to judge the process of students' adaptation to the learning environment, as well as adaptation against the background of acclimatization. Research is promising in other regions of the country; among students studying at universities of other departments. This will provide the basis for planning preventive measures in youth groups to preserve their health and improve professional training.

The main innovative methods of teaching a foreign language, conditions for their effective application in the educational process of higher educational institutions along with their teaching and educational potential are analyzed. Amongst the innovative methods of teaching students a foreign language, the author highlighted the following: training modules that ensure the development of the fluency of students' speech, as well as their confident communication in a foreign language; case technologies that make it possible to use practical life situations for learning; binary classes allowing the integration of subjects, interest and students` motivation. Educators and students have the opportunity to use the Internet and computer technology to increase the efficiency of the process of learning foreign languages in university courses. A great tool for learning foreign languages are mobile applications and Internet platforms that use authentic materials. Students and teachers have access to audio and video materials created by native speakers who are also teachers. The article deals with the issue of the language adaptation of foreign students who have left the preparatory faculty and begun their studies in Russian in the first year of the main faculty of the Russian University. The main problem is the lack of knowledge of Russian by foreign students to understand and take notes at lectures, to actively participate in seminars. The article identifies and discusses the main difficulties faced by foreigners while studying in Russia and the reasons of their appearance, analyzes the conditions of training of foreign students at the preparatory faculty and the real results of this training, the main of which is the discrepancy between what foreign students know and are capable of and what they need to know and be able to, becoming the first-year students of a Russian University. Most first-year foreign students find it difficult to study at the same level with Russian students, so they need the support and understanding of not only teachers of Russian as a foreign language, but also teachers of other subjects. It is noted that teachers who don’t specialize in teaching Russian as a foreign language can’t and don’t want to adequately assess the level of knowledge of a foreign student and help them if needed. The article proposes a possible solution to this problem.

The article deals with the issue of the effectiveness of using dictogloss as a way of enhancing communicative speech activity, critical thinking and creative potential of students of non-language higher educational institutions in ESP classes. The key stages of the traditional dictogloss are considered: 1) preparation; 2) dictation; 3) reproduction; 4) analysis and reflection, comparing texts created by subgroups with the original or with texts of other subgroups. The main principles (such as the principle of cooperation training and the use of interactive technologies, the principle of the curriculum and the educational process connection, the principle of diversification, the principle of the development of mental, mnemic and perceptual processes, the principle of emotionality, the principle of systematicity and consistency) aimed at ensuring the outcomes and effectiveness of innovation dictations and the ways of their implementation are outlined. The main modified versions of the dictogloss are analyzed and recommendations for their preparation in ESP classes are provided: dictogloss-negotiations, «student-control» dictogloss, student-student mode, «Summary» dictogloss, «Express your own opinion», «Reodering dictogloss», «Add details», «Picture» dictogloss. Dictogloss is determined to be an effective activity for teaching ESP, since it can be applied to different levels of foreign language proficiency and adapted for any specialism. The advantages of the dictogloss are emphasized: it can be used to represent a new topic, to revise and practice vocabulary or grammar material; it does not require more time for preparation than other types of activity; the teacher can change the forms of dictations, adding a competitive element or element of the gamification; it can become a source of motivation for learning a foreign language and a way of diversifying pedagogical techniques and technologies.
