ABSTRACT Drugs abuse is a complex phenomenon with many causes, and it affects children and adolescents. The objective of this research was to seek scientific evidence that contributes to the understanding of the existing relation between the use of crack and other drugs by children and adolescents and the family. The method used was the integrative review. The bases analyzed were: MEDLINE, LILACS, Cochrane, BDENF and IBECS. Descriptors: cocaine, crack, family and family relationships. Three categories were evidenced: Family environment as a protector and/or facilitator for the use of crack and other drugs by children and adolescents; Lack of knowledge and the repercussions of the use of crack and other drugs by children and adolescents in the family environment; Networks to support the family and coping with the use of crack and other drugs. The family environment has a protective function against the use of drugs, but the issue of drugs has to be faced and addressed. It is also necessary to strengthen the social networks and discuss prevention themes.

Abstract.Metaphors are a useful resource not only to influence family relationships but to achieve positive changes in parenting behavior. Family intervention is essential in all forms of intervention, to the point that if there are no changes in family systems, it will be very difficult for a counselor or an educational psychologist to have positive effect on children and adolescents. The family often contributes not only in maintaining the problems alive, but also in generating them. Adults immersed in a negatively balanced family system generally also show defensive behaviors induced by emotional distress or unconscious personal insecurity. The use of the metaphor involves the transmission of symbols or anchors, which can serve as an effective tool to control this type of behavior, and is crucial to successful intervention. In this paper, practical examples of different metaphors for parents and their objective in therapy will be presented. Keywords: family intervention, psychology intervention , family relationships, metaphorResumen.

AbstractWhat was the role of the family in individual reproductive decisions during state socialism? Can the family help to understand regional variations in fertility decline? This study provides an in-depth analysis of family relationships and their influences on individual reproductive decisions during the transition from first to second birth in Soviet Ukraine. Life history interviews are used to compare the western and eastern borderland cities of Lviv and Kharkiv, respectively, around 1950–1975. The findings reveal that regional differences in intergenerational ties and spousal cooperation shaped two reproductive strategies of transition to second birth, specifically postponing in Kharkiv and spacing in Lviv.

WhatsApp has become a major necessity in modern communication both individually and as a group. During an unprecedented time like COVID-19 pandemic, it increased the utilization of social media among society and has developed new norms among its users, especially grandparents. This study emphasises the various real-life activities undertaken by grandparents in social media and detailed research regarding the various WhatsApp administrators in a group chat. A qualitative research approach consisting of in-depth interviews have been carried out among family members in order to gather all the information-involving informants. In addition, it aims to gain a broader perspective of the informants' view regarding their grandparents becoming the administrator of a family WhatsApp group. Results of this study revealed that family relationships became strengthened between grandparents and other family members, especially with their grandchildren. Secondly, grandparents started being obsessed with WhatsApp, they are keen to learn more and are even able to keep up with the latest technology. Finally, the topics discussed in the family WhatsApp group covers current issues such as politics, religious advice, and sometimes entertainment. We sought, in this investigation, to understand the family dynamics in the view of parents and children involved in Domestic Violence against children and adolescents institutionalized in the Center of Assistance to the Victimized Child and Adolescent (CACAV), in Ribeirão Preto-SP, Brazil. This is a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews applied to parents and children from six families involved in domestic violence. The data were analyzed through content analysis. Ecology of human development was used as theoretical reference. Domestic violence was reported, though it is understood as common practice for the families. We identified that the parents' view favors the denial of the violence perpetrated. The children, on the other hand, point that love ties and affection are more significant for their development than blood relations. We believe that the knowledge acquired as how violence is experienced, can contribute with intervention strategies capable of breaking the perverse cycle of violent family relationships.

Purpose This paper aims to adopt a relational dialectics analysis approach to provide qualitative depth and insight into the ways intercultural families manage intercultural tensions around consumption. The authors pay particular attention to how a relational dialectics analysis reveals a relational change in the family providing evidence to demonstrate how a family’s unique relational culture evolves and transitions. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative insights from a relational-dialectic analysis on 15 intercultural families are used to illustrate the interplay of stability with instability in the management of intercultural dialectic tensions within these families. Findings Intercultural dialectical interplay around food consumption tensions are implicit tensions in the household’s relational culture. Examples of dialectical movement indicating relational change are illustrated; this change has developmental consequences for the couples’ relational cultures. Research limitations/implications This study provides qualitative insights on relational dialectics in one intercultural family context and reveals and analyses the dialectical dimensions around consumption in the context of intercultural family relationships. The research approach could be considered in other intercultural and relational contexts. Practical implications Family narratives can be analysed within the context of two meta-dialectics that directly address how personal relationships evolve; indigenous dialectic tensions within a family can also be identified. Originality/value This paper demonstrates the qualitative value of a relational dialectics analysis in revealing how food consumption changes within families are the result of reciprocal or interdependent learning, which has consequences for relational change.

Background:The Convention on the Rights of the Child acknowledges that the family is the natural environment for the upbringing of a child and that the parents have the primary responsibility for the child's education. However, it also mentions the need to find adequate substitute care whenever the child is temporarily or permanently deprived of his or her family environment, or when the child's best interests cannot be secured within the family environment. This substitute care may include adoption, foster placement or, as last resort, placement in an institution suitable for child care. Although some institutions have high quality standards for child care, this is not always the case.Institutionalized children are likely to come from unfavourable family environments, where they were victims of multiple psychosocial adversities, and studies show they present high scores of emotional and conduct disorders, together with cognitive problems. Methods:We examined medical files of all the institutionalized children and adolescents who attended the outpatient clinic of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Coimbra, Portugal, between the years 2005 and 2008, in order to characterize this population. Results:There was a male excess in our sample. The majority of the children and adolescents were institutionalized due to abuse and/or neglect and had conduct or oppositional defiance disorder. A considerable number had cognitive deficits.Discussion:Mental health services should work closely with these institutions to identify their strengths and difficulties, facilitating prevention, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric problems.

IMPACT OF FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS ON THE SELF-ESTEEM OF OLDER ADULTS ABSTRACT The family plays a very important role, especially in the field of socio-emotional relationships, since it is the most suitable to provide feelings of security, usefulness, self-esteem, confidence and social support. The objective of this research is to analyze the impact of family relationships on the self-esteem of older adults. Through a descriptive study from a mixed research approach based on surveys applied to older adults. As results were obtained the evidences that lead to a deep reflection about how the feelings of loneliness, isolation and the burden of responsibilities within the home bring serious consequences for the health and low self-esteem of the elderly. It is necessary to propitiate within the family relationships the acceptance of oneself of the older adult, not to burden him with too many responsibilities within the home; provide security when he believes that because of his age does not work or is a hindrance, when he does not accept changes in his body and is depressed, when he is negative, pessimistic and hard to give and receive affection. KEYWORDS: Older adults; self-esteem; family relationships.

Intensified anxiety responses and even symptoms of post-traumatic stress are commonly observed under quarantine conditions. In this study, the effects on fear, anxiety and wellbeing of the recent pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 were investigated in a sample of otherwise healthy Hungarians. Taking the family as a microsystem, differences in gender, age, family relationships and time spent in isolation were the main focus of this investigation. 346 parent-child dyads were examined; the children were 11-17 years of age. Standard psychological questionnaires (Perceived Stress Scale, WHO Wellbeing Index), and an open question test (the Metamorphosis test) were used, and the results analysed with the aid of basic statistical methods. Stress levels and wellbeing displayed a significant negative correlation with each other in both parents and children. Parental stress and levels of wellbeing had a weak but significant impact on the wellbeing of their children. Among the demographic variables examined, none of them was found to explain the wellbeing or stress level of parents. Natural catastrophes, such as pandemics, create a stressful social environment for parents, and therefore directly impact the psychological wellbeing of all family members.
