Abstract: This study aims to find out what are conversational features used by male and female characters in Game of Thrones season 8, how it is represented in their conversation, and how power and social status affect characters' linguistic behavior. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. The data of this study are twenty-two conversations taken from episode 1 up to episode 6 of season 8. There are four conversational style features discussed in this study: (1) talkativeness, (2) interruption, (3) compliments, and (4) minimal responses. The results show that all four features are found in the conversations, but they are manipulated differently by male and female characters. Also, the use of gender conversational style features in this case seems universal. Female characters are more talkative which confirms the theory of women’s language. Male characters also use female conversational style more frequently in terms of minimal responses and compliments. However, power plays an important role in this case since it enables characters to be more dominant which reflects that gender is not the only factor to control the conversation. Keywords: compliments, conversational style, interruptions, minimal response, talkativeness Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui gaya percakapan yang digunakan oleh pemeran pria dan wanita dalam serial berjudul Game of Thrones Season 8, bagaimana gaya tersebut direpresentasikan dalam percakapannya, dan bagaimana kekuasaan dan status sosial mempengaruhi perilaku linguistik karakter. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah dua puluh dua percakapan yang diambil dari episode 1 hingga episode 6 di season 8. Ada empat fitur gaya percakapan yang dibahas dalam penelitian ini: (1) tingkat keaktifan berbicara, (2) interupsi, (3) pujian, dan (4) tanggapan minimal. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keempat fitur ditemukan dalam series ini, namun dipraktekkan secara berbeda oleh karakter pria dan wanita. Selain itu, penggunaan fitur gaya percakapan gender dalam hal ini terkesan universal. Karakter perempuan lebih banyak bicara yang mana mendukung teori gaya bahasa wanita. Karakter pria juga lebih sering menggunakan gaya percakapan wanita dalam hal memberikan tanggapan minimal dan pujian. Namun, kekuasaan memainkan peran penting dalam hal ini karena memungkinkan karakter lebih dominan dan menjelaskan bahwa gender bukan satu-satunya faktor yang mengendalikan percakapan. This research dealt with conversational style of male and female teachers in senior high school. The objectives of this study were: to investigate features of conversational style used by male and female teachers in senior high school; and to elaborate the conversational style. It was conducted using qualitative research design. The data were obtained from 4 male and 4 female teachers. 20 conversations were recorded. The instruments of collecting data were observation, recording, and interviewing adopted by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The data were classified to the criteria of conversational style determined by Swann (2000).The findings showed there were five features of conversational style used by male and female teachers. All features of conversational style were found in realization of male and female teachers.Keywords: Conversational style, Gender and Language, Teachers‟ language.

This research deals with the conversational styles by male and female sellers in business transactions at traditional market “Pasar Sentosa Baru” Medan. It was conducted using qualitative research design. The subjects of 8 persons namely 4 male sellers and 4 female sellers were taken which they produced 20 conversations for each genders. The ages ranged from 30 to 60 years old. They come from various sellers, namely fish, chicken, vegetables, fruits, and spice. The instruments of collecting data were observation, recording, field notes, and interviewing adopted by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The findings show that there were five types of conversational styles used by male and female sellers. In conversational styles used by male sellers; amount of talk (30%), interruption (26.7%), conversational support (21.7%), compliment (16.6%), and tentativeness (5%). In conversational styles used by female sellers; interruption (29%), amount of talk (23%), conversational support (24%), tentativeness (15%), and compliment (9%). In conversational styles in male sellers business transaction, the more dominant responses refer to talk of amount because they talk much in interaction in public context, while for female, the more dominant responses refer to interruption because the female sellers are taken as a violation and a sign of conversational dominance.Keywords: Conversational styles, Gender, Traditional Market.

This paper explores the Social Status Shift and Collapse of Uleebalang in Aceh of 1900-1946. The conflict between ulama and ulebalang increasingly entered a critical phase, especially after news of Japan's defeat. This research is conducted by using qualitative research design. The results shows that the surrender of the uleebalang did not dampen the ulama's determination to continue to expel the Dutch from the land of Aceh in various regions, both in Aceh City, Pidie, North Aceh, West Aceh, Central Aceh and Southeast Aceh fall on the battlefield. The Aceh War had a great impact on the people of Aceh, especially the scholars. The direct impact of the Aceh war can be seen from the division of ulama into three groups, there are 1) The ulama who was the Kadli in the government of the uleebalang who recognized Dutch sovereignty; 2) The ulama who only give religious lessons in dayah-dayah; and 3) The ulama who still continued the struggle against the Dutch. In addition, the fundamental impact is the strengthening of the position of ulama in Acehnese society. Another impact is the widening of the distance between the ulama and the uleebalang. The Dutch tried to break the Acehnese community through politics.

Purpose: This study examines Carol Ann Duffy’s unique discourse of rewriting and telling old stories, fairy tales, and myths that represent female characters as marginalized, inactive, and weak. Methodology: A qualitative research design was adopted to investigate the pervasive shifts of restructuring female convictions, configurations, and identity in selected poems from Duffy’s The World’s Wife. The research data in this paper is drawn from two main sources: literary books and articles. Main Findings: The analysis unravels Duffy’s feminist attitude in her poetic collection to reveal how she used her poems as weapons to fight against female marginalization. Simultaneously, the study critiques the traditional patterns of feminist thinking with origins in history and myths that are still prevalent in Western culture. Applications: This paper can be used by literary scholars and students. Novelty/Originality: In this research, female characters were explored in the light of Simon de Beauvoir’s concept of the other from her book The Second Sex and Hélène Caxias’s critical notions postulated as écriture feminine.

This study focus on investigating utterances used by male and female teachers in teaching learning process based on inquiry model. It is a qualitative research design. The subjects were six teachers in SMP AL-Wasliyah 29 Medan. There are three male teachers and three female teachers. The data of this research is collected by recording, transcribing and analysing. Recording was applied to record utterances of male and female teachers in teaching learning process based inquiry model. Transcribing was applied to transcribe the utterances of male and female in teaching learning process based on inquiry model. And analysing was to analyse the utterances of male and female in teaching learning process based on inquiry model. The study proposed by Tanen’s theory. The problem of the study are how the categories of male and female teachers’ utterances realized and why realized in the ways they are. The data were analysed by using Miles and Huberman. The result of this study revealed that: Male and female teachers were different in delivering their utterances. It could be seen from the categories showed on their utterances. Male teachers showed the categories of male utterances, such as support, intimacy, understanding, feeling, and proposal in their utterances to their students. Purpose – The purpose of this study is to ascertain the control role of independent non-executive directors (INEDs) in Malaysian public listed companies (PLCs), as prescribed in the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance (MCCG).The MCCG (2000) requires substantive involvement of INEDs on the audit, nomination and remuneration board sub-committees. The study also examines the effectiveness of INEDs in discharging their monitoring roles in these sub-committees. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative research design consisting of a series of interviews with board members of Malaysian-owned PLCs on the board of Bursa Malaysia was used. Findings – Interviews with 27 company directors reveal that, due to their independence, INEDs are crucial in safeguarding the interests of smaller investors if situations arise in which shareholders’ interests may be threatened. The interviews also disclose that the audit committee possesses the most authority among the sub-committees, as it derives its power not only from the Listing Requirements but also from statute, as well as being involved in areas of the company not traditionally associated with the committee. The study also reveals the differences in opinion between executive directors and INEDs with regard to the extent of INEDs’ effectiveness. Research limitations/implications – This research utilises interviews. Generalisation may be an issue when interviews are used as the method of inquiry. In addition, the sample is not random, as access to many directors is dependent on recommendations. In addition, the respondents have been consciously selected to cover various board positions, including independent and non-independent directors. Practical implications – The findings from this research suggest that INEDs are able to discharge their responsibilities in overseeing the conduct of executives and protecting the interests of investors. In addition, the interviews disclose that the effectiveness of INEDs depends on how non-executive directors view INEDs being on the board. Rather than focusing solely on their control role, INEDS are expected to have a more proactive and progressive role in ensuring sustainable growth and the expansion of the business entity. Originality/value – There are limited studies using qualitative research design in investigating the effectiveness of INEDs in the control role of the board in developing countries. Prior studies were predominantly based upon the experience of Western economies.


Organizations have recognized the need to have a workforce that can give the company direction and help it adapt to continuous market changes. Many organizations have taken note of this ever-changing competitive market and implemented the Graduate Development Program (GDP) to ensure the development and consistent supply of its talent pool. Adopting a qualitative research design with research instruments that allow interaction with all key stakeholders, the objective of this paper is to assess GDP as an interventional strategy for talent management, in the context of Namibia. The study findings are mixed as it shows that current and past employees feel that the GDP implementation is not effective due to their negative perceptions about the identification of outside talent and yet the findings did reveal that the GDP has resulted in improved talent sets and an enabling environment to recruit, develop and retain staff in critical positions.

Speech acts as an important element during communication, because it explains the thoughts of the speaker(s). A speech act is more about what is performed when uttering words and not about individual words or sentences that are known to form the basic elements of human communication. An attempt to do something through speaking is what is known as a speech act and a lot of things can be done through speaking. A speech act is studied under speech act theory and is found in the domain of pragmatics. Using a qualitative research design, the key objective of this study is to analyze the types of speech acts adopted in the inaugural address of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo as the President of the Republic of Ghana for his second term on the 7th January 2021. This study analyzed the Inaugural Address using Searle’s theory of speech act as a theoretical framework with emphasis on Searle’s five categories of speech act. The study showed that out of a total of 74 locutionary / Statements in the inaugural address,assertive acts are 40.5% of the utterances, commissive acts are 25.6%, while directive, expressive and declarative have small portions, of 13.5%, 12.2%, and 8.2% respectively.
