Recently, there are an increasing trend in location-based augmented reality (AR) games that require players to move around physically to acquire the in-game features as well as game bonuses. The introduction of this location-based augmented reality (AR) games, specifically, Pokémon Go, has made the players physically move around to achieve higher levels and indirectly, improves the level of physical activity. Thus, the objective of the current study is to examine the association between the time spent playing location-based AR games specifically Pokémon Go, and the level of physical activity of the players in Malaysia. A self-administered questionnaire was circulated among Pokémon Go players and based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 47 players were recruited in the study. Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) was used to identify the level of physical activity. The association between time spent playing Pokémon Go and level of physical activity were examined using the Chi-square test. The results of the current study showed no significant association between days spent playing Pokémon Go and level of physical activity (p = .14), hours spent playing Pokémon Go and physical activity (p = .516), or between daily hours spent playing Pokémon Go and daily sedentary time (p = .283). Nevertheless, the mean of the study reported that the physical activity level of the players increased concurrently as the player’s game frequency increases. Further studies are required to shed light on how location-based AR games can be implemented as potential strategies to engage an active lifestyle.

The high school per blocks of semiannual subjects and the physical activity level of students. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of physical activity level of adolescents enrolled in a high school per blocks of semiannual subjects’ program. The sample consisted of 197 adolescents, divided into two groups (Block 1 - who had a physical education class in the first semester and Block 2 - who did not have a physical education class). To characterize the sample, data on body mass and height were collected to calculate body mass index. The physical activity level was obtained through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire short version. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The chi-square test was performed to verify the comparison between the physical activity level proportions. To identify the association between the variables teaching in block and physical activity level, the relative risk test was used. A 95% confidence interval was adopted with significance level of p 0.05. The Chi-square test showed no significant difference (p=0.678) in the percentage frequencies obtained in the physical activity level between Blocks 1 and 2, but it was observed that students who had physical education classes in the first semester presented a 2.90-fold higher risk factor were less active in the second semester. It was concluded that high school in blocks influences physical activity level negatively.

Objective: Pokémon Go is a location-based augmented reality game for mobile devices. Leveraging GPS and camera on the smartphone, Pokémon Go requires the player to travel around an area capturing animated creatures. This study aimed to evaluate physical activity associated with Pokémon Go. Methods: We recruited 167 iPhone users who had played Pokémon Go in July 2016. Study participants provided screenshots of their daily “steps” reported on their iPhone Health app between June 15, 2016 and Jul 31, 2016. The primary outcome measures were average daily “steps” and % of days > 10,000 steps/day before and after playing Pokémon Go. Results: Of 167 volunteers, the mean age were 26±6 years. The average daily steps was 5678±2833 (median 5718 [IQR 3675-7279]) before the participants played Pokémon Go and this number increased to 7654± 3616 (median 7232 IQR [5041-9744]) after they started playing the game. On average, we observed an increase of 1976 (95% CI 1494-2458, p<0.001) in daily steps ( Figure ). Additionally, participants were more likely to achieve 10,000 steps/day goal after playing Pokémon Go (15.3% before vs. 27.5% after; OR 2.06, 95% CI 1.70-2.50). Results from subgroup analyses also showed significant increased level of physical activity after Pokémon Go. Participants who spent more time playing (2-2.5 hours/day 2861 more steps, 95% CI 1884-3837; >2.5 hours/day 2238 more steps, 95% CI 1008-3467), overweight/obese (3031 more steps, 95% CI 2132-3929), or with a lower baseline physical activity level (lowest quartile, 2,899 more steps, 95% CI 2030-3767) had the largest increase after the initiation of the game. Conclusion: We observed a significant increase in physical activity associated with Pokémon Go. Games like Pokémon Go may provide an alternative way to encourage exercise, especially among young adults with low baseline physical activity levels and/or overweight/obesity.

Background and Objectives: Menopause is a normal physiological change occurring at a woman’s mid-life. During this time, women experience vasomotor, physical and physiological problems, which reduce their quality of life. Many women are searching for different, alternative methods to reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms. Physical activity (PA) is one of the recommended methods to reduce menopausal symptoms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between specific domains (physical activity during leisure time, at work, during transportation and household activities) and the menopausal symptoms. Materials and Methods: We included 305 women aged 40–65 in the study. All participants were divided into three groups according to menopausal status. The research tools used were the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to assess physical activity level in four domains and the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) to assess the severity of menopausal symptoms. The data analysis was performed by Chi-square test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc Tuckey test. Results: Menopausal stage was significantly associated with the total MRS score (p < 0.001) and specifically the urogenital and somato–vegetative subscores (p < 0.001). Physical activity was significantly associated (p < 0.001) with leisure time (according to IPAQ domains). Most postmenopausal women had high PA level (59.66%). Significantly less women with high PA levels had severe urogenital symptoms: 10.82% of participant with a low PA level, 11.15% with a moderate PA level and 4.26% with a high PA level (p = 0.046). Conclusions: Physical activity during leisure time is associated to menopausal symptoms in Polish women. Women with high and moderate PA levels have less severe menopausal symptoms compared to inactive women. Middle-aged women with low PA levels at work suffer from more severe somato–vegetative symptoms.

Background:Proximity to urban green spaces (UGS) and open sports spaces (OSS) benefits health, promotes physical activity (PA) and sports practice (SP).Objective:Analyze the association between PA or SP according to distances between UGS or OSS and teenagers’ residences or schools. Methods:We evaluated 1333 (53.9% girls) teenagers (13 years old) living and studying in Porto, Portugal (EPITeen cohort). PA was classified as light or moderate/vigorous. Distances were the shortest routes from residences or schools to UGS/OSS, and classified in ≤250 m; >250 m to ≤500 m; >500 m to ≤750 m; >750 m. Chi-square test and chi-square for trends were used to compare proportions; associations were measured using logistic regression, through odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals, adjusting to BMI and parental education. Results:Regarding vicinity’ of schools, the prevalence of moderate/vigorous PA among boys, decreases as distances to OSS increases. For girls, the prevalence of sports decreases as distances to UGS increase. For boys, we found an association between moderate/vigorous PA and proximity to OSS in the vicinity of schools: considering ≤250 m as reference, the odds of moderate/vigorous PA is 0.20 (0.06–0.63) for >250 m to ≤500 m; 0.21 (0.07–0.61) for >500 m to ≤750 m and 0.19 (0.06–0.58) for >750 m.Conclusion:Vicinities of schools seem to influence teenagers to be more physically active and increase sports participation.

Background: Given the widespread prevalence and serious nature of Internet addiction (IA), this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of IA and assess the relationships between IA and combinations of physical activity (PA) and screen-based sedentary behavior (SB) among adolescents in China. Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed 31,954 adolescents in grades 7 to 12 in Beijing. IA, PA, screen-based SB, and other information were obtained from a self-administrated questionnaire. The chi-square test and mixed-effects logistic regression model were applied to estimate the relationship between IA and combinations of PA and screen-based SB. Results: 6.2% of the surveyed adolescents reported IA and the prevalence of low PA/high screen-based SB, high PA/high screen-based SB, low PA/low screen-based SB, and high PA/low screen-based SB were 53.7%, 19.5%, 18.8%, and 8.0%, respectively. Mixed-effects logistic regression analysis showed that adolescents with low PA/high screen-based SB were 1.99 (95% confidence interval, 1.62–2.44, P < .001) times more likely to prefer IA than those with high PA/low screen-based SB. Conclusions: The prevalence of IA among Chinese adolescents is still high. Intervention programs like maintaining sufficient PA and reducing screen-based SB might contribute to reducing their IA.
