The date palm (Phoenyx dactylifera) consisted, for the people of southern Algeria, as tree of providence. Dates and their extracts are also used for many centuries as a medicine against allergy, inflammation, constipation and gastro-protective; they also have a high antibacterial and antioxidant activity. However, no studies are conducted to evaluate the extract from the leaves of date palm (Phoenyx dactylifera) in point of view of phytochemical composition, antimicrobial and the antioxidant activity. In this study, we have determined the phenolic compounds, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of methanolic extracts from three varieties of leaves tree. According to the results the leaves extracts have very important values for polyphenols (215.24 to 156.46 mg GAE/gDW) and high antioxidant activity (324. 45 to 206.21 mg GAE/gDW), Diphenyl-1 picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging activity (IC50 = 2.98 to 4.83 μg/ml); also the three extracts reveal a considerable antimicrobial potency and antifungal considerable activity, the diameter of inhibition is 35.2 to 39.5 mm (concentration 50 mg/ml) for Candida albicans ATCC 90026.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), a member of Zingiberacaeae, is used for Thai traditional medicine, flavoring, preservative, and coloring agent. In Southern Thailand, turmeric is a famous ingredient for food recipes. Not only is the ripened rhizome used for cuisine, but also the young rhizomes. Previous studies have indicated that a variety of turmeric products from the ripened rhizome are valuable source of antioxidant compounds. However, there are ambiguous data regarding the level of antioxidant activity of the young rhizome. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of the young rhizomes by comparing to the ripened rhizome. TPC and antioxidant activity of aqueous and 80% methanolic extracts from the young turmeric grown in Southern Thailand were estimated using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and DPPH free radical scavenging activity (DPPH-RSA) assay, respectively. Results showed that the concentration of TPC determined in methanolic extract (19.80±0.25 mg GAE/ g extract) from the young rhizome was significantly higher than the corresponding aqueous extract (18.38±0.41 mg GAE/ g extract). The aqueous and methanolic extracts exhibited significant inhibition in DPPH-RSA with the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 5.88±0.70 mg/mL and 3.00±0.31 mg/mL, respectively. However, in comparison with the ripened rhizome, TPC and DPPH-RSA of the young rhizome were lower. These results indicate that the young rhizome grown in Southern Thailand could be a source of antioxidant compounds, but the ripened rhizome provides better antioxidant properties than the young rhizome.

Aqueous and methanolic extracts of several microalgae (Ankistrodesmus sp., Spirogyra sp., Euglena cantabrica, and Caespitella pascheri) and cyanobacteria (Nostoc sp., Nostoc commune, Nodularia spumigena, Leptolyngbya protospira, Phormidiochaete sp., and Arthrospira platensis) were screened for their radical scavenging activity against the stable radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl. Despite the fact that water was a more efficient solvent to extract greater amount of extractable substances, it seems that methanol was more efficient to extract a selected group of compounds with a higher antioxidant activity. In addition, the identification of 4 simple phenolics (gallic, syringic, protocatechuic, and chlorogenic acids) and the flavonoids (+) catechin and (-) epicatechin was carried out by using reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography. The strain Euglena cantabrica showed the highest concentration of phenolic compounds, particularly gallic and protocatechuic acids (5.87 and 2.97 mg per gram of dried biomass, resp.). Aqueous and methanolic extracts of microalgae Euglena cantabrica also exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, probably due to the presence of the high contents of phenolics.

Background: The use of medicinal plants for maintaining good health is getting attention worldwide. Antioxidants play an important role to protect damage caused by oxidative stress. In the present study methanolic extracts of Cassia fistula  was determined using DPPH for its antioxidant activity. Phytochemical investigation confirmed the presence of bioactive ingredients in the extract.Methods: The antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Cassia fistula was evaluated using DPPH free radical assay. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyine) free radical analysis is one of the accurate and frequently employed method for evaluating antioxidant activity.Results: The methanolic extracts showed increase in radical scavenging activity as concentration increases. The IC50 values were calculated for the methanolic extract. Ascorbic acid was used as control. Cassia fistula exhibited IC 50 of 79.42µg/ml.Conclusions: Scientific evidence suggests that antioxidants reduce the risk for chronic diseases including cancer and heart disease and infectious diseases. Further evaluation of pharmacological activities of Cassia fistula may prove useful in treatment of cancer and heart diseases.

Polyphenols in methanolic extracts from Sonneratia caseolaris seeds were determined by HPLC coupled with electrospray mass spectrometry and quantified by HPLC coupled with ultraviolet/visible detection in order to evaluate their stability of the extracts during 6 months of storage. Antioxidant activity was measured by using TEAC assay, and the free radical scavenging activity was monitored in the initial 3 months of the stability evaluation. Study on the effect of temperature on the stability of the methanolic extract indicated that gallic acid, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, and luteolin were unstable at 25 and 45°C during storage time. At -80 and 4°C the quantities of luteolin-7-O-glucoside reduced while those of luteolin increased at the same time. The results suggested that luteolin-7-O-glucoside was hydrolyzed to luteolin. Therefore the polyphenols should be kept at low temperature. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract was preserved in all temperatures during the first 3 months.

Olax scandens Roxb. (family Olacaceae) Available in throughout tropical India. The current study, aerial parts of different extracts of Olax scandens by different in-vitro methods. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity(OH radical), Nitric oxide radical scavenging activity(NO radical), and total antioxidant activity (Phosphomolybdic acid method) with reference standard Ascorbic acid. An IC50 value was originated that methanolic extracts of Olax scandensis more efficient in Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, Nitric oxide radical scavenging, total antioxidant activity than that of EA and petroleum ether extract. The methanolic  extracts  of Olax scandens & ascorbate exhibited antioxidant potential possessing IC50 253µg/ml & 135µg/ml (NO radical ), 205µg/ml & 57µg/ml (Phosphomolybdic acid method), 265µg/ml & 65µg/ml (OH radical) respectively. But when compared to all the three extracts with ascorbate (standard), the methanolic extract of the Olax scandens showed a better result. Moreover, the results were observed in a concentration-dependent manner. Invitro antioxidant studies obviously showed that methanolic extracts of Olax scandens have better antioxidant activity. These results indicate that aerial parts of methanolic concentrates Olax scandals could serve as a natural antioxidant, which may be useful to prevent free radical-induced diseases.

Stinging nettle (Urtica parviflora), locally known as sisnu in Nepal, is rich in phytochemicals. Phytochemical are non-nutritive bioactive chemical compounds found naturally in plants; possess antioxidant activity and reduce the risk of different diseases by serving structural and functional role as well as an electrolyte. The effect of drying temperature (50, 60, 70ºC) and natural fermentation (24±1ºC for 15 days) of fresh nettle buds on the phytochemical composition (polyphenol, tannin, flavonoid and antioxidant activity) were studied. The phytochemical screening of the samples was carried out using 80% ethanol through maceration technique. The tannin, flavonoid, total phenol content and antioxidant activity in ethanolic extract of fresh nettle buds were found to be 1.02±0.08 mg/g, 0.126±0.005 mg/g, 145.69±2.01 mg/g and 59.53±0.03% on dry basis respectively. The increase in drying temperature, significantly (p<0.5) decreased the polyphenol contents but had no significantly effect on the tannin, flavonoid content and antioxidant activity. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of leaves dried at 50ºC was found to be maximum (56.72±0.07% on db) and minimum (47.56±0.02%) at 70ºC. The natural fermentation significantly (p<0.05) increased the total phenol (273.2±2.33 mg/g), flavonoid (0.408±0.08 mg/g) and tannin (3.56±0.11 mg/g) content on dry basis. The increase in total phenol and flavonoid content exhibited the subsequent increment in the antioxidant activity (87.69±0.02%). It was found that, nettle buds contained a number of health promoting bioactive compounds such as tannins, polyphenol and flavonoid and their concentration increased significantly by natural fermentation but were not significantly affected by drying temperature (50-70ºC).

Five species of edible wild mushrooms were selected to determine the proximate composition, vitamins (retinol, α-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol, thiamin, riboflavin, and ascorbic acid) and mineral contents (Fe, Zn, Co, Ca, Mg, K, and Na), antioxidant activity, and total phenolics. Hygrophorus sp. showed significant higher ( p<0.05) fat content as compared to other wild mushrooms with the mean value of 6.57%. However, Polyporus tenuiculus was found to be a good source of fiber while Hygrocybe sp. was good in α-tocopherol among the mushrooms tested. The iron and calcium contents were the highest in Hyrocybe (175.64 μg/g) and Hygrophorus sp. (81.70mg/100g) respectively. The in vitro antioxidant activities of petroleum ether (PE) and methanolic extracts of the edible wild mushrooms were comparable to the cultivated oyster mushroom. The radical scavenging activity was highest for PE extract of Pleurotus sp. (85%) while methanolic extract of Hygrocybe sp. exhibited the highest (94%) chelating effect, in correlation with its significantly higher ( p<0.05) phenolics content (42.21 mg GAE/g extract). In conclusion, edible wild mushrooms can be an excellent source of micronutrients and antioxidant components.

Nyctanthes arbour-tristis is a shrub belongs to the family Oleaceae. The flowers of this plant are fragrant since the presence of flavonol glycosides. It has also been reported for the presence of β-sitosterol, iridoid glycosides, tannins etc., and known to have immunostimulant, hepatoprotective, antiviral and antifungal activities. In the present study an attempt is made to identify antioxidant capacity and anthelminthic potential of methanolic flower extract of Nyctanthes arbour-tristis. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by total phenolic content assay, total flavonoids content assay, free radical scavenging activity and reducing ability methods. Anthelmintic activity was evaluated on Perithima posthuma using Piperazine citrate as standard drug. The results obtained for the above activities reveals that Nyctanthes arbour-tristis shows considerable antioxidant activity for all the methods and anthelminthic potential at 300 mg/ml. Verbena officinalis Linn is a traditionally known medicinal plant which is used against a number of diseases including inflammatory conditions. In this study its antioxidant activity (reducing powers, 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activities), ferric reduction activity potential (FRAP), total flavonoid concentration and antimicrobial activities of 80%, 90%, 100% methanol and chloroform extracts of V. officinalis Linn root and 90% and100% methanol leaf extracts were determined. Its antioxidant activity increases with increase in amount of extract (10% to 40%v/v). Total flavonoid content (TFC) varied from 73.32±0.002 mgQE/100g of dry weight (90% methanol) to 42.39±0.032 mgQE/100g dry weight (chloroform), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), radical scavenging activity (%) was varied between 87.39% (90% methanol) to 45.57% (chloroform) while Ferric reducing antioxidant power was observed between 372.93±0.04 mgAAE/100 g extract (90% methanol) to 129.41±0.026 mgAAE/100 g chloroform in the root extract. The methanolic extract of the leaf showed less antioxidant activity than the methanolic extract of the root. Crude extracts of V. officinalis root showed various degree of antimicrobial activity towards drug resistance microbial pathogens. Growth inhibition tests against bacterial pathogens demonstrated concentration dependence. Moreover, gram positive bacteria were more susceptible to V. officinalis root extract when compared to gram negative bacteria. In general V. officinalis root and leave extracts possess strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

The antioxidant activity of cookies prepared by the addition of sugarbeet dietary fibers was investigated in order to estimate their influence on functional characteristics and shelf-life of cookies. Treated fiber (TF) was obtained from sugarbeet by extraction with sulfurous acid (75 °C at pH = 5.7during 60 min) and treatment with hydrogen peroxide (20 g/LH2O2 at pH = 11 during 24 h). The fiber obtained was dried (80 °C), ground and sieved. TF was investigated in comparison with commercially available Fibrex®. The cookies were prepared by the addition of 0, 7, 9 and 11% of sugarbeet dietary fiber as a substitute for wheat flour in the formulation of cookies. The antioxidant properties of cookies were tested every 7 days using a DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity test during 6 weeks of storage at room temperature (23 ± 1 ºC). The obtained results indicated that substitution of wheat flour with Fibrex® in the formulation of cookies upgraded the antioxidant activity, i.e. the functional characteristics of Fibrex®-enriched cookies and could prolong their shelf-life. In contrast, TF did not increase the antioxidant activity of TF-enriched cookies. The better antioxidant activities of Fibrex®-enriched cookies could be attributed to the presence of ferulic acid.
