BACKGROUND Due to Covid-19 lockdown initiated by the Government, the teaching was transformed to an online sphere. Reflection from students was quite essential for advancement in newer platforms. Thus, perception of various online teachinglearning methods among medical students were assessed. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study conducted among phase-1 MBBS students of Government Medical College, Thrissur. This study was done to analyse medical student’s perceptions on four methods of online classes which included live online lectures, assignments, sending PowerPoint presentations and pre-recorded videos. All statistical data was analysed using SPSS software version 16. Continuous variables was expressed as mean ± standard deviation. Difference between the groups were analysed by simple ANOVA but the subgroup analysis in each variable was done by post hoc analysis with Bonferroni test. The level of significance was kept at 5%. RESULTS When different variables were analysed by anova, it was found out that emphasizing important aspects of topics, describing the contents in a logical sequence and interaction was significantly better in live online lectures. Coverage of learning objectives and description of concepts was significantly better in narrative PowerPoint presentation. Likewise, it significantly helped them to prepare notes for examination. Live online lectures effectively used audio-visual aids and it has aroused interest in the subject. Live online lecture was found to be the best single method as compared to the other three when all ten variables were analysed conjointly. CONCLUSIONS The preferred method for online teaching for phase-1 medical students was online lectures when all variables were analysed. Important aspects of topics were emphasized, the contents were discovered in a logical sequence, the audio-visuals were used effectively, and interest was aroused in topics through live online lectures. All the learning objectives were covered and described very clearly and note preparation was easy in PowerPoint presentation. Background: Students favthisteaching methods employing combination of audio visual aids and blackboard teaching over didactic lectures not using these aids. Different methods of lecture are-blackboard teaching, power point presentations (PPT) and mix of aids. This study was primarily done to know the students’ attitude and preferences regarding the lectures using PowerPoint (PPT) presentations and the traditional ‘black-board teaching’ method with an aim to improve the quality of didactic lectures in pharmacology by their appropriate use in further teaching – learning process, with an aim to improve their use in didactic lectures.Methods: A questionnaire-based observational study (annexure-1) observational study was conducted among all the medical students of 4th semester MBBS attending theory classes in the department of Pharmacology in Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal.Results: In this study, as a whole Majority 68 % (42 students) of students preferred mix of aids as teaching method over blackboard and power point. Sixty two students participated in the study out of which 58% (36) were male and students 42% (26) were female. Students told that the lectures using mix of aids were well organized and the lecture contents were well informative. As far as matter of suggestions is concerned 46 (74.2 %) students gave suggestions to improve teaching methods. As compared to blackboard the lectures taken on PowerPoint were clearly visible and well audible to all the students of the classroom..Conclusions: This study demonstrates that lectures delivered by using a mixture of audio visual aids are more appreciated by the students over blackboard teaching and power-point teaching individually. For further improving their lectures, if possible teachers should plan to implement feasible student suggestions by using a combination of audio visual aids.

Background: Medical education has been reported to be one of the most stressful academic curricula worldwide, negatively affecting the physical and mental health of medical students. A medical student can be stressed due to different reasons or stressors such as the academic, financial problem, health problem or loss of close family member or friend, etc. It is the person’s ability to face the everyday challenges which will determine whether he/she will be stressed or not. This stress manifests itself in a variety of forms, including burnout, depressive symptoms, poor Quality of Life, and fatigue. The greater the number of forms of stress experienced by an individual student, the higher the risk of recent suicidal ideation or serious thoughts of dropping out of medical school.Methods: Present observational study was conducted at Government Medical College, Gondia during July 2017 to April 2018. To collect the data, medical students’ stress questionnaire (MSSQ) was used.Results: Out of 100 study subjects approached, 98 subjects responded. At Ist session, Out of 6 domains, Academic related stressors was found to be highest (1.95±0.668) followed by Teaching and learning related stressors (1.39±0.81). Similarly in IInd session, similar results were exaggerated. Academic related stressors was found to be (2.00±0.61) followed by Teaching and learning related stressors (1.39±0.81).Conclusions: A large proportion of medical students have potential psychological problems. The stressors experienced by the students were mainly related to academics and psychosocial concerns.

Background: India is facing critical problem of paucity of certified physicians in rural areas, although majority of the population resides in rural areas. According to rural health statistics report 2015, there is a deficit of 659 doctors in rural areas. The study was done with the objective to capture the perception among medical students (interns / postgraduates) about their preference of work place after graduation/post-graduation and to know the factors responsible for preference / non-preference.Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out, among 203 medical students in a government medical college of Bhopal (M.P) from January to March 2016. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to obtain information regarding their preference to serve in rural areas and reasons associated with their choices. The data was entered in MS excel and analysis was performed using Epi-Info7.Results: The study participants included 203 medical students, only 33 (16.26%), were willing to work in rural area. The major reasons for non-preference of rural area were lack of primary facilities like equipments, paramedical staff, non favorable working conditions. Majority of them responded that good salary, better lifestyle and security for doctors especially for females would make them work there.Conclusions: Very less proportion of study participants preferred rural area as their preferred work place. Our study has shown a need for intervention to overcome these perceptions and attitudes of the students towards practice in rural area in order to reverse this disparity.

Introduction: Medical teachers have conventionally been using different teaching methods to educate medical students previously dominated by blackboard and slide projectors. Now day’s audiovisual aids such as power point have been used. The optimum use of audiovisual aids is essential forderiving their benefits. This study was done to know the students’ preference regarding the various audiovisual aids, with an aim to improve their use in didactic lectures. Material &Methods: Two hundred and eighty six from first, second and third professional medical students were invited to participate in a questionnaire based study. Two hundred and thirteen (74.4%) students completed the questionnaire and their responses were analyzed. The first part of the questionnaire included demographic and educational details. The second part consisted of 12 statements regarding the preference of audiovisual aids for various aspects of learning. Results: In this study, 90.1% of the respondents (first, second & third professional) were stimulated for further reading if they attended a lecture which was augmented by the use of visual aids. The respondents preferred a combination of audiovisual aids during a didactic lecture. The perception of diagrams, flow charts and note taking was best accepted with a power point presentation by first and second professional students, whereas OHP preferred by third professional students . In understanding a particular topic, a combination of aids scored over the use of a particular visual aid alone. In listening and understanding a particular topic, power point presentation was the most preferred aid, with the blackboard being preferred by third professional students. About 62.4% of the respondents were interested in taking notes during class compare to handouts. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that lectures delivered by using a combination of audio visual aids are more appreciated by the students. Furthermore, the lecture should be constructed in a fashion so as to enable the students to gather factual information easily and in a concise manner. BACKGROUND Due to changing priorities of medical students in the present day scenario, an insight of their Emotional Intelligence (EI) can serve as a predictor of their compassionate and understanding domain. The relation of EI with academic performance will give an idea on how the emotional or indirectly psychological component plays a role in the manner the medical students perform. Importance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) is increasingly recognised. It is more relevant in medical professionals who have an inbuilt touch of emotions to the profession. The study was conducted to evaluate EI of 7th semester MBBS students and also to determine the relation if any of EI with their academic performances. METHODS This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in a Government Medical College in Central India. The study was carried out among 159 medical students. Data collection was done with the aid of a structured, pretested questionnaire which had questions based on the Quick Emotional Intelligence self-administered questionnaire. Academic scores of previous MBBS years were considered. The relation between emotional intelligence and academic scores was studied. Data was entered in Microsoft excel. Statistical analysis was done with help of Open Epi Info. RESULTS Mean ± Standard Deviation of Emotional awareness, Emotional Management, Social Emotional Awareness, and Relationship Management scores were 23.94 ± 4.86, 24.56 ± 6.49, 27.75 ± 5.77 and 25.91 ± 6.46 respectively. Mean total Emotional Intelligence score including all domains was 102.16 ± 18.38. A weak positive correlation was established between EI and academic scores. CONCLUSIONS EI of medical students was directly associated with their academic scores. KEY WORDS Emotional Intelligence, Medical, Academic Scores, Students

Background: To enhance successful communication medical teachers are increasingly using different visual aids. Objective: To determine medical students perception of different visual aids like black board (BB), over head projector transparencies (OHPT) and, LCD and to generate recommendations for their optimal use. Methods: A questionnaire based study was carried out among first year MBBS students of Government Medical College, Kota, India. The survey was undertaken among 84 Medical students of first year MBBS of batch 2008 after exposing them to different visual aids like BB, OHPT and LCD in Physiology lectures. A few lectures were absolutely on BB, and some were on OHPT and on LCD. Few classes were taken with mixed visual aids. Students were exposed for such visual aids for one year and then they were requested to complete a questionnaire. Data were statistically analyzed by One Sample Chi-square test. Results: 55 (65.48%) students rated chalk & black board as best visual aids in understanding the topic better as compared to OHPT and LCD (P<0.01). 47 (55.95%) students have good learning experience with black board teaching and it is best mode to note down important points. 56 (66.66%) students favored LCD as more interesting and interactive visual aids (P<0.01). It also complete the lecture faster which was advantageous for 69 (82.17%) students. 77 (91.66%) students wanted mixing of different visual aids (P<0.01). Mostly (75%) do not find any difficulty in switching from one mode to another. No significant gender difference was observed. Conclusion: To improve students learning medical teachers should match the lectures with preferred visual aids. It will maintain interest and enthusiasm among pupil. Background: Substance abuse is a pandemic among adults. We carried out this study to know the prevalence of tobacco and alcohol use among II prof MBBS students. The objective was to know the prevalence of tobacco and alcohol use among II prof MBBS students.Methods: An observational study aimed find out the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco abuse. During the period of January 2015 to October 2015 and 100 student from 2nd professional of a medical college from Central India were interviewed using semi structured interview schedules for students.Results: Total students in our study that ever tried alcohol smoking was 62%, among which 47% continued and 53% discontinued. Among 100 participants 55 were male and 45 were female. Out of 100 student 62 were tried alcohol/smoking once in their life time. 13 students were exposed to substance abuse at during their school life, 7 were started during preparation of medical entrance and 42 were started it after coming to college. 12 participants were who were regular using alcohol were belong to family where either one or both parents were doctors among them. Most of the participants were influenced by their friends, 27% were started it for their own gratitude and 9.6% were have seen their family members. 21% participant were involved in indisciplinary activities.Conclusions: The substance abuse is highly prevalent among youngster and the prevalence of substance abuse among female were also significant which is highly alarming situation.
