Background: Traditional method of assessment of a long case in practical examinations is broad based. All domains of learning are not evaluated and areas of weakness not categorised.Methods: A structured format, the objective structured long examination record (OSLER) for assessment of post graduate students in anaesthesiology for long case presentations was prepared. The impact of the new tool on the faculty, the students and the overall performance of the students was assessed through questionnaires and scoring systems.Results: We found that 75% students and 100% teachers agreed that the conduct of examination was fair. There was a 100% agreement among both that the OSLER provided an opportunity to the process of learning. 63% accepted that the questions were clear and unambiguous. 88% students agreed upon having exams conducted in a similar format in future. 75% teachers opined that they would like to take an exam in a similar form. 65% teachers agreed that more initial preparation time was needed and 58% thought that training was required.Conclusions: OSLER is a good technique for assessment of a long case in practical examination.

AbstractDuring an eight-hour shift, an industrial worker will inevitably cycle through specific postures. Those postures can cause microtrauma on the musculoskeletal system that accumulates, which in turn can lead to chronic injury. To assess how problematic a posture is, the rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) scoring system is widely employed by the industry. Even though it is a very quick and efficient method of assessment, RULA is not a biomechanics-based measurement that is anchored in a physical parameter of the human body. As such RULA does not give a detailed description of the impact each posture has on the human joints but rather, an overarching, simplified assessment of a posture. To address this issue, this paper proposes the use of joint angles and torques as an alternative way of ergonomics evaluation. The cumulative motion and torque throughout a trial is compared with the average motions and torques for the same task. This allows the evaluation of each joint’s kinematic and kinetic performance while still be able to assess a task“at-a-glance”. To do this, an upper human body model was created and the mass of each segment were assigned. The joint torques and the RULA scores were calculated for simple range of motion (ROM) tasks, as well as actual tasks from a TV assembly line. The joint angles and torques series were integrated and then normalized to give the kinematic and kinetic contribution of each joint during a task as a percentage. This made possible to examine each joint’s strain during each task as well as highlight joints that need to be more closely examined. Results show how the joint angles and torques can identify which joint is moving more and which one is under the most strain during a task. It was also possible to compare the performance of a task with the average performance and identify deviations that may imply improper execution. Even though the RULA is a very fast and concise assessment tool, it leaves little room for further analyses. However, the proposed work suggests a richer alternative without sacrificing the benefit of a quick evaluation. The biggest limitation of this work is that a pool of proper executions needs to be recorded for each task before individual comparisons can be done.

Abstract Background As in many countries worldwide, due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, higher institutions in Nigeria closed in March 2020 and only began reopening in October of the same year. As a result of the lockdown, some higher institutions had to quickly move from the traditional face-to-face teaching method to virtual learning. This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on education in Nigeria and also provide recommendations that may be useful in developing remote teaching contingency strategies. Five-point Likert-scale questionnaire targeting students and teachers separately was designed to get feedbacks from both students and teachers on their experiences, issues and successes. The questionnaires were divided into five categories: virtual classrooms, course learning outcomes, alternative method of assessment, impact of online teaching and satisfaction. Results A total of 703 students and 60 teachers from five different local universities participated in this study. All participants (> 50%) had difficulties with Internet connection. Students (67%) as well as teachers (59%) agree that they had limited interactions with one another and this negatively influence student’s satisfaction (p < 0.01). While students were split on the most appropriate method of assessment, teachers (63%) believe assignments and oral examinations are more suitable for online teaching. Many teachers (66%) admitted that it was difficult assessing students’ abilities and performance. Some students (> 40%) were concerned about the number of assignments given. Most teachers (84%) believe there is an increase in tendency for examination malpractice when assessment was conducted virtually. Students had significantly (p < 0.05) higher marks in all courses during online assessment compared to previous session involving face-to-face teaching. About 83% of teachers admitted it was difficult explaining complex scientific concepts. Conclusion Based on the results of this study, we provided recommendations to help educational institutions in Nigeria develop remote teaching contingency strategies.

Background: The aim of medical education is to develop overall medical student’s clinical competency at all the levels. Practical examinations play a major role in the overall assessment of the cognitive, affective as well as psychomotor domains of the individuals. Different variability in clinical examination, student’s variability, the examiner’s variability and the patient’s variability and the attitude towards disease may have effect on the assessment of the students. Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) was designed to test the clinical competence by bed side while simultaneously improving objectivity and reliability. The objectives of the study were to assess the effectiveness of OSCE for assessment tool as compared to traditional method of assessment; to know the perception of students participated toward OSCE. Methods: Study was conducted among a batch of 25 students of VIth semester student posted in Department of Community medicine. After undergoing traditional method of examination, all the participating students underwent OSCE and the marks were recorded. Student’s perception regarding OSCE was recorded using a questionnaire. Results: Marks scored by the students in OSCE were significantly higher than traditional practical examination. 92% students agree that OSCE useful tool in overall assessment of the student, better form of assessment & learning, easy to pass and score better marks than traditional method of examination. Conclusions: OSCE useful tool in overall assessment of the student, better form of assessment & learning, score better marks and has less emotional stress in OSCE, when compared to viva voce.

The use of portfolios as an assessment tool probably is unlikely common in Asian countries. Portfolios is commonly considered as a compilation of students’ work for a certain period of time. In fact, the portfolios may show the originality of and the nature of students’ learning improvement. In this paper, the writer will discuss portfolios as a method of assessment in English as Second Language or English as Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) classroom context from teacher’s perspective. This paper is designed with this format order: firstly to explain about the degree of portfolios method to assess content, skills and knowledge in the teach-ing-learning program in the ESL/EFL context, to correlate portfolios system to model of curriculum planning and policy context. Secondly, to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of portfolios method from a theoretical perspective, and analyse the validity, reliability, and fairness. Thirdly, to specify the association of portfolios method and the types of assessment and the correlation of portfolios method with assessment for learning. AbstractMost of young people are enthusiasticin having the most recent mobile gadgets just to boast among their peers. They likely utilize them to make phone calls, take pictures, listen to songs, watch videos, or surf the internet access for learning or just entertainment. In a technologically advanced country like Indonesia, the third and fourth generation (3G, 4G) mobile devices are available at affordable prices, and people of all streams find it necessary to own a mobile gadget for connecting and communicating.  Moreover, it has become a common trend among undergraduates to carry a mobile gadget to the classroom as well.In this paper, the researcher emphasize the potential of mobile gadgets as a learning tool for students and have incorporated them into the learning environment.The present study examines the application of mobile gadgetin EFL learning and investigates the perceptions of EFL students about mobile gadget in learning activity.  A field study was conducted on thirty undergraduatestudents majoring in accounting study Serang Raya University.  The methodology of data collection included a self-report for students and teachers’ and students’ questionnaire. The Corona virus is a virus that originates from China, and spreads rapidly throughout the world andbegan to spread to Indonesia in early March 2020. The impact of Covid-19 has caused losses in all fields,be it economy, education, etc. In the field of education, activities both learning and examinations must bereplaced online due to the impact of the spread of Covid-19. This study aims to determine theeffectiveness of the implementation of UAS which is carried out online using the Google Form applicationmedia at SMP MA'ARIF NU CIMANGGU. This research uses the quantitative survey method whichdescribes the online UAS implementation activities at SMP MA'ARIF NU CIMANGGU during thepandemic. The object consists of 35 student respondents. The data sample collection is done using aquestionnaire / questionnaire containing questions related to the implementation of UAS online using theGoogle Form application at SMP MA ' ARIF NU CIMANGGU. Based on the results of this study, theimplementation of online UAS runs effectively f and good, it can be seen from the results of satisfactorystudent scores. The application used is of course the Googke Form as the main media, and Whatsapp as amedium for interaction between teachers and students. The obstacles experienced are regarding badconnections, limited quota, schedules that frequently change, as well as difficulties in understandingsubject matter.Keywords: Covid-19,impact,effectiveness

The paper has a two fold purpose - examine the impact of bar service operation practices (BSOP) on organizational performance (OP) and study the relationship between organizational performance and demographic variables. Based on a survey of 362 bar managers perceptions on the impact of bar service operation practices on organizational performance were assessed by 59 practices and 6 demographic variables. Bivariate test and ANOVA were employed to test the working hypothesis in the study. Results indicated that there is a positive relationship between the bar service operation practices and organizational performance. Further, the results indicate some practical and managerial implications to improve organizational overall performance.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS-Associated Lipodystrophy Syndrome includes changes in body fat distribution, with or without metabolic changes. The loss of fat from the face, called facial lipoatrophy, is one of the most stigmatizing signs of the syndrome.OBJECTIVES:To evaluate the effect of FL treatment using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) implants on disease progression, assessed by viral load and CD4 cell count.METHODS: This was a prospective study of 44 patients treated from July 2009 to December 2010. Male and female patients, aged over 18 years, with clinically detectable FL and who had never been treated were included in the study. PMMA implantation was done to fill atrophic areas. Laboratory tests were conducted to measure viral load and CD4 count before and after treatment.RESULTS: Of the 44 patients, 72.72% were male and 27.27% female, mean age of 44.38 years. Before treatment, 82% of patients had undetectable viral load, which increased to 88.6% after treatment, but without statistical significance (p = 0.67). CD4 count before treatment ranged from 209 to 1293, averaging 493.97. After treatment, the average increased to 548.61. The increase in CD4 count after treatment was statistically significant with p = 0.02.CONCLUSION: The treatment of FL with PMMA implants showed a statistically significant increase in CD4 count after treatment, revealing the impact of FL treatment on disease progression. Viral load before and after treatment did not vary significantly.
