PORTFOLIOS ASSESSMENT AS A METHOD OF ASSESSMENT OF LANGUAGE IN ESL CLASSROOM CONTEXT

The use of portfolios as an assessment tool probably is unlikely common in Asian countries. Portfolios is commonly considered as a compilation of students’ work for a certain period of time. In fact, the portfolios may show the originality of and the nature of students’ learning improvement. In this paper, the writer will discuss portfolios as a method of assessment in English as Second Language or English as Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) classroom context from teacher’s perspective. This paper is designed with this format order: firstly to explain about the degree of portfolios method to assess content, skills and knowledge in the teach-ing-learning program in the ESL/EFL context, to correlate portfolios system to model of curriculum planning and policy context. Secondly, to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of portfolios method from a theoretical perspective, and analyse the validity, reliability, and fairness. Thirdly, to specify the association of portfolios method and the types of assessment and the correlation of portfolios method with assessment for learning. Fourthly, to evaluate the degree of portfolios method of assessment promoting learning of the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to my teaching experience.Keywords : Portfolios, Assessment, Curriculum, Learning, Knowledge, Skills.

This thesis aims to examine the management process applied in the Madrasah Murottilil Qur'an Al-Rifa'ie 2 Malang. Beginning with the curriculum planning process, implementing the curriculum, and how to evaluate the curriculum of the Madrasah Murottilil Qur'an Al-Rifa'ie 2 Malang. This research aims to find out and describe the managerial process of the curriculum, and the inhibiting factors in the implementation of efforts to achieve the vision, mission that has been set.This thesis is a report on the results of field research using a qualitative descriptive method with a case study research approach that takes place at the Al-Rifa'ie 2 Malang Boarding School.Data collection is done by interview, observation, and documentation. Data analysis is done by reducing data, then presenting data, and finally from the compiled data conclusions are drawn. Checking the validity of the data is done with credibility which includes Triangulation, peer checking, extension of observation time, increasing perseverance.The results of the analysis show that the curriculum management implemented by p Madrasah Murottilil Qur'an Al-Rifa'ie 2 At the planning stage, the process carried out was planning the implementation time, the learning program, making the academic calendar, and how the evaluation was held. At the implementation stage, it starts with a new santri test, conducts learning and conducts an ascension test. The evaluation process is carried out at least 2x in one month, and 1 and after one semester.

The purpose of this study is to describe female students’ experiences in an engineering living-learning program using metaphorical analysis through a constructivist theoretical perspective. Extant literature uses metaphors from a negative viewpoint or a deficit model to describe the experiences of female undergraduates in engineering; however, new metaphors have not been used to describe the experience. This study aims to fill existing gaps in LLP literature using qualitative methods. Data from 13 semi-structured individual interviews (7 initial interviews and 6 follow-up interviews) serve as the primary data source. After conducting metaphorical analysis, I found five interpretive metaphors emerging: LLP as a Starting Point, LLP as a Neighborhood, Engineering Classes as Challenges, Different as Normal, and Female Engineers as a Support System. Two significant findings were found: advantage-based metaphors are used to provide a positive description of women in engineering and metaphorical analysis is an appropriate method for conducting research under the constructivist theoretical perspective.

This research is to study the attitudes of English students from English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) country in English and Foreign Languages University (EFL University), Hyderabad to English. This is a descriptive-quantitative research with a survey method. The attitudes researched include those to listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The data was taken through questionnaireconsisting of 20 questions. The findings of this study showed that the English students in EFL University have neutral-to-positive attitudes to Listening, positive attitudes to Speaking, positive attitudes to Reading, and poor attitudes to Writing. In addition, the English students from ESL country have better attitudes to Reading (positive) and Writing (neutral)and those from EFL country have better attitudes to Speaking (neutral-topositive)and Listening (neutral-to-positive). Keywords: Attitudes; English as Second language (ESL); English as Foreign Language (EFL).

In English as Foreign Language (EFL) classroom context, it is compulsory for the students to make reflections of literary works. The current study is aimed at examining how the students implement Gibbs� reflective cycle in making reflections of literary analysis. The qualitative study employed a document analysis upon the students� reflection artefacts. The students� reflections are their responses to a short story written by Amy Tan. The findings of the study revealed that Gibbs� reflective cycle is a good framework to be used by the students in writing reflections upon literary works they are working on. The well-structured framework of writing reflection helped the students explore the literary work deeply, since the reflective cycle accommodates important aspects that can be explored from the literary work by the students. It can be concluded from this study that among the models of reflective writing developed by Kolb, Johnson, and Gibbs, the latest model is considered the most suitable to be used in literary classroom since its well-structured model enables the students to write better reflections of literary works.Keywords: reflective writing; Gibbs� reflective cycle framework; literary works; literary analysis.

Background: Traditional method of assessment of a long case in practical examinations is broad based. All domains of learning are not evaluated and areas of weakness not categorised.Methods: A structured format, the objective structured long examination record (OSLER) for assessment of post graduate students in anaesthesiology for long case presentations was prepared. The impact of the new tool on the faculty, the students and the overall performance of the students was assessed through questionnaires and scoring systems.Results: We found that 75% students and 100% teachers agreed that the conduct of examination was fair. There was a 100% agreement among both that the OSLER provided an opportunity to the process of learning. 63% accepted that the questions were clear and unambiguous. 88% students agreed upon having exams conducted in a similar format in future. 75% teachers opined that they would like to take an exam in a similar form. 65% teachers agreed that more initial preparation time was needed and 58% thought that training was required.Conclusions: OSLER is a good technique for assessment of a long case in practical examination.

An effective method of student assessment technique is necessary for assessing student knowledge. Nowadays, the utilization of formative assessment tools in blended learning is increasing because it can enhance the learning quality. The main aim of this study to identify and classify existing research through the research approach, assessment tools type, and assessment specialty on formative assessment tools in a blended learning environment. This study guiding the educators in choosing and developing new assessment tools. The methodology of this research using a systematic review. This method using the inclusion and exclusion process to make a systematic review focused and choose appropriate studies. The result shows that the highest usage of assessment tool type is automatic assessment with the percentage of 87%. Semi-Automatic assessment has 13% and manual assessment 0%. It proves that technology is an important part of education and teaching because significantly transform the method of assessment from manual to automatic assessment type. This is a great transformation from the traditional method to the modern method of assessment. We recommend to further improve methods for online formative assessment and develop computer-based testing in a blended learning environment for future work.

With the growth of global economy, TV commercials not only have added a new dimension to the communication process throughout the world, but also have been widely recognized as authentic materials that can be beneficial to the need-based learners. This paper attempts to analyze the performance of two groups of students’ persuasive speech presentations, one in the traditional mode and the other was with TV commercials to examine the impact of using TV commercials in the language classroom. This paper includes the result of a survey conducted on the students of Stamford University Bangladesh. It also discusses the limitations of using TV commercials in the context of learning EFL (English as Foreign Language)/ESL (English as Second Language), particularly in Bangladesh. Introduction: Safe and efficient handovers between emergency medical services (EMS) practitioners and emergency nurses are vital as poor transitions may lead to loss of information and place patients at risk for adverse events. We conducted a mixed methods systematic review to a) examine factors that disrupt or improve handovers from EMS practitioners to emergency department nurses, and b) investigate the effectiveness of interventional strategies that lead to improvements in communication and fewer adverse events. Methods: We searched electronic databases (DARE, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, CINAHL, Joanna Briggs Institute EBP; Communication Abstracts); grey literature (grey literature databases, organization websites, querying experts in emergency medicine); and reference lists of the included studies. Citation tracking was conducted for the included studies. Two reviewers independently screened titles/abstracts and full-texts for inclusion and methodological quality using the Effective Public Health Practice Project Quality Assessment Tool for quantitative studies and the Joanna Briggs Institute Critic Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research. Narrative and thematic synthesis were conducted to integrate and explore relationships within the data. Results: Twenty-two studies were included in this review from the 6150 records initially retrieved. Our analysis suggests that qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research approaches have been utilized to explore handovers. Studies (n=11) have predominantly explored existing patterns of handovers focusing on barriers and facilitators. Interventions (e.g. multimedia transmission of pre-hospital information, tailored e-learning program) were investigated in five studies. Results suggest that lack of formal handover training, workflow interruptions, workload, and strained working relationships between EMS and nursing are perceived threats to optimal handovers. Conclusion: The findings from this review can inform the development of handover interventions and contribute to a more rigorous approach to researching handovers between EMS practitioners and emergency nurses. Furthermore, there is a need for studies in which specific interventions to optimize handovers are examined.

This study is an endeavor to find how English native and nonnative EFL/ESL (English as foreign language/English as second language) writers use adversative conjunctions to connect ideas together so that texts have both coherence and cohesion. Regarding the problems nonnative writers of EFL face when composing a piece of writing, we attempted a qualitative study through compiling a stack of 200 articles written by the two groups. The research design concerned the content analysis of research articles and descriptive statistics showing the frequency of occurrences of modals in the data. The findings indicated that the number of proper and correction adversatives exceeded those of contrastive and dismissal; the statistically significant difference between two groups lay in the use of proper and correction adversative conjunction, whereas the two groups showed little or no difference in the usage of contrastive or dismissal adversatives. These findings can help material writers, EFL/ESL teachers, and learners to appreciate the significant roles adversative conjunctions play in writing.

Urogenital atrophy occurs as a result of the effect of estrogen deficiency on the tissue quality in the vulva, vagina, urethra and bladder. It is a common consequence of the menopause, with possibly up to 80% of women experiencing symptoms. Despite a number of different diagnostic methods, there is no validated objective method by which to confirm the diagnosis in clinical practice and research settings. Education, for women and clinicians, is called for to support diagnosis and treatment. However, before this can be of global benefit, development of an accessible and reproducible diagnostic test is required. Current assessment methods include routine history and clinical examination, with the clinician’s opinion based on their subjective observations. A vaginal smear to assess the ratio of superficial to parabasal cells and measurement of the pH of the vaginal secretions is more commonly used in research settings. A number of formulae have been postulated to facilitate the diagnosis including the Vaginal Health Index, the Vulval Health Index, the Genitourinary Syndrome of the Menopause assessment tool, the Genital Health Clinical Evaluation and vaginal biopsy and assessment of the vaginal microbiome. However, none of these potential methods of assessment has been validated. This article focuses on what we do not know about urogenital atrophy including the prevalence, the most appropriate terminology, aetiology, pathogenesis and the most objective and reproducible method of assessment.
