Background: Urothelial carcinoma is the most common invasive cancer of the urinary tract. Lately, there has been an increased incidence of urothelial neoplasia due to exposure to a wide range of potentially carcinogenic substances. Studies of involved factors led to the concept of existence of a so-called malignization terrain, which claims that individual genetic predisposition and chronic exposure to carcinogens act synergistically leading to the appearance of urothelial carcinomas of the bladder. Aim of the research was to find out the common etiological factors of bladder cancer in this part of India.Methods: The study included 100 patients of bladder carcinoma reporting to Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital, Amritsar from March 2018 to December 2019. A detailed history was taken to have the insight of various etiological factors of the disease. The data was entered in Microsoft excel spreadsheet and analysis was done using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 21.0.Results: The most common blood group associated with CA UB was A +ve (39%) followed by B +ve (29%). 89% of the cases of CA UB were non-smokers predominantly attributed to type of patients coming to our tertiary care institute which are from a rural background (73%) and are mostly Sikhs (80%) and Sikhs are traditionally non-smokers. 80% were farmers by occupation who have exposure to pesticides, insecticides, weedicides and herbicides routinely.Conclusion: In our study majority of the patients turned out to be non-smokers and A +ve blood group in contrast to the strong predilection of smoking and bladder cancer.

Background: Gall bladder is among the most common surgically resected organs with various neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. Chronic chocystitis is the most commonly encountered lesion in India and worldwide and 78-90% are associated with calculi. Gall bladder cancer constitutes 0.5% to 1.09% including both suspected and incidental diagnosis. The objective of present study was to evaluate the various lesions of Gall bladder and the importance of grossing and histopathological examination of every cholecystectomy specimen in order to diagnose the incidental gall bladder cancer (IGBC).Methods: A Retrospective study of cholecystectomy specimens for a period of one year, May 2015 to June 2016 was carried out. 252 Cholecystectomy specimens were received and all of them subjected for histopathological examination and the sections stained with routine Hematoxylin and Eosin stain.Results: Commonest age group being 21-40years (41%) followed by 41-60years (40%). Gall bladder (GB) lesions are more common in females 175 (70%) and M:F ratio 1:2.2.Most commonest lesions were Chronic calculous cholecystitis constituting 155 cases (61%) followed by chronic cholecystitis 52 cases (21%). Cholelithiasis was associated with both Acute and Chronic Cholecytitis constituting 67%. Acute calculous cholecystits constitute 13 cases (5%) and Acute cholecystitis constitutes 10 cases (4%). In Congenital anomalies, 3 cases (1.2%) of Biliary atresia and 4 cases (1.2%) of choledochal cyst were diagnosed. 4 cases (1.6%) of Gall bladder carcinoma was diagnosed. Among these 3 cases were incidental gall bladder carcinoma (IGBC).Conclusions: cholecystectomy specimens should be subjected for histopathological examination to study various lesions of GB and to detect unsuspected incidental gall bladder cancer as cholecystectomy itself is the treatment for gall bladder cancer and also other lesions of GB associated with cholelithiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) consists of a wide range of conjunctival and corneal lesions ranging from dysplastic lesions to invasive squamous cell carcinoma. In recent times, the incidence of OSSN seems to be on the rise, especially in developing countries. The present study was aimed to analyse demographic pattern, clinical characteristics, and histopathology findings of OSSN in a tertiary care centre of western region of Nepal.  MATERIAL AND METHODS: It was a retrospective study. We analyzed 94 cases of OSSN who presented to cornea department of Lumbini Eye Institute, Bhairahawa, Nepal over a period 1.5 years from 1st July 2017 to 31st December 2018. All the patients with OSSN, detailed clinical history and examination were recorded. Lesions were excised with a 3 mm margin clearance and sent for histopathological examination.  RESULTS: Mean age of our patients with OSSN was 48.89±17.955 years ranging from 17 to 85 years. There were 52 (55.32%) male and 42 (44.68%) female. Mean duration of presentation was 6.34±6.17 months. A solitary nodule at the limbus was the commonest presentation. Right eyes were involved more than left eyes. Lesions were found most commonly on temporal site 52 (55.32%) followed by nasal 36 (38.30%). On histopathological examination benign lesions were found in 31 (32.98%) eyes, preinvasive lesion in 50 (53.19%) eyes and invasive lesions in 13 (13.83%) eyes.  CONCLUSION: OSSN were seen more commonly in young adults with male predominance. Benign and pre invasive lesions are found more commonly than invasive lesions.

BACKGROUND There is a wide range of adnexal masses ranging from functional cyst to infection and even malignancy. Epithelial ovarian tumours are the most common benign ovarian lesion. The purpose of this study was to study the pattern of adnexal masses in rural area and plan the preventive steps according to the pattern. METHODS It was a retrospective study of patients who presented with adnexal masses in Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College (Women), Khanpur, Sonepat, Haryana, India over a period of 5.5 years from September 2012 to August 2018. The file records of the patients who underwent surgery for adnexal masse were evaluated to identify the risk factors, presenting complaints, examination findings, serological markers and radiological findings. The histopathological reports were reviewed. The cases excluded were ectopic pregnancies. Frequency distribution tables were used and data was analyzed using percentages. RESULTS Out of total 180 adnexal masses, 167 (92.77 %) cases were of ovarian origin. Out of these, 150 (83.33 %) cases were benign and 17 (9.44 %) were malignant. Among the benign lesions, serous cystadenoma was the most common lesion counting for 54 cases i.e., 30 %. In our study, most common symptom was vague abdominal pain- 63.88 %. Maximum adnexal masses were in the age group of 41 - 50 years i.e., 53 (29.44 %). Different types of surgeries were done. Maximum were bilateral oophorectomies with transabdominal hysterctomy 88 (48.88 %). CONCLUSIONS By proper education about personal and perineal hygiene, use of contraceptives, we can at least prevent some sexually transmitted diseases causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and adnexal masses. Objectives: ABO blood grouping is a well-proven prognostic factor in many malignancies. This study aims to study the association and impact of ABO blood group on disease recurrence and progression in bladder carcinoma. Material and methods: Patients with bladder carcinoma undergoing transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) were studied prospectively for at least 1-year follow-up for recurrence and progression of the disease. Demographic profile along with blood group was noted. Results: Two hundred patients were included in the study and 194 patients were included in the final analysis. Muscle-invasive bladder cancer was present in 39 (20.1%) patients and the high-grade tumor was present in 88 (45.3%) patients. There was no statistical significance between the association of blood grouping and grade ( p=0.29) and stage of the disease ( p=0.20). During the follow-up period, there were 100 (64.5%) recurrences and 15 (9.7%) patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma had progression. The association of blood group with recurrence ( p=0.66) and progression ( p=0.11) of disease was not statistically significant. Conclusion: There is no association between bladder cancer and ABO blood group in terms of grade and stage of the disease. The recurrence and progression of the disease did not differ significantly in different blood groups. Level of Evidence: 2b

Background: Hysterectomy is the most commonly performed gynaecological surgery as the female reproductive system has been affected by various non-neoplastic and neoplastic conditions during the life time of a woman.Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 160 hysterectomy specimens reported to Department of Pathology. They were compared in terms of age of the patients and pathology of hysterectomy specimens. The histopathological findings of hysterectomy specimens was noted and these findings were then correlated with clinical diagnosis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the wide range of pathological lesions, commonest pathology involved and correlation of the preoperative clinical diagnosis with the histopathological diagnosis in the hysterectomy specimens.Results: The most common type of hysterectomy was total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-ophorectomy with 102 cases (63.7%). Peak incidence at 5th decade of life in 92 cases (57.5%) was noted. The most common clinical indication was fibroid uterus in 81 cases (50.6%). Proliferative phase of endometrium was the commonest finding in 87 cases (54.3%). In case of myometrium, 95 leiomyomas were noted. On histomorphological study of cervical lesions, chronic cervicitis was commonest finding in 75 (46.8%) cases.Conclusions: Few double pathologies can be missed clinically so clinico-pathological correlation in all cases of hysterectomy has been proved to be important to improve the clinical outcome and post-operative management.

Abstract Background: Bladder carcinoma is one of the most common urological cancers. ITPR3, as a ubiquitous endoplasmic reticulum calcium channel protein, was reported to be involved in the development and progression of various types of cancer. However, the potential roles and molecular mechanism of ITPR3 in bladder cancer are still unclear. Herein, we elucidated a novel role of ITPR3 in regulating the proliferation, metastasis, and stemness of bladder cancer cells.Methods: The expression of ITPR3 in bladder cancer was analyzed using public databases and bladder cancer tissue microarrays. To demonstrate the role of ITPR3 in regulating the NF-ĸB/CD44 pathway and the progression of bladder cancer, a series of molecular biology and biochemistry methods was performed on clinical tissues, along with in vivo and in vitro experiments. The methods used included western blot assay, quantitative RT-PCR assay, immunofluorescence assay, immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays, wound healing assay, Transwell assay, colony formation assay, tumorsphere formation assay, cell flow cytometry analysis, EdU assay, MTT assay, cell transfection, bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSP), a xenograft tumor model and a tail vein cancer metastasis model.Results: Higher ITPR3 expression was found in bladder cancer tissues and bladder cancer cells compared with the corresponding normal peritumor tissues and SV-HUC-1 cells, which was attributed to demethylation in the ITPR3 promoter region. ITPR3 promoted the proliferation of bladder cancer by accelerating cell cycle transformation and promoted local invasion and distant metastasis by inducing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Meanwhile, ITPR3 maintained the cancer stemness phenotype by regulating CD44 expression. NF-κB, which is upstream of CD44, also played a critical role in this process.Conclusions: Our study clarifies that ITPR3 serves as an oncogene in bladder cancer cells and represents a novel candidate for bladder cancer diagnosis and treatment.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> The prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is 2-3 per 1000 live births in India, and out of 1000 babies, 1 is having profound degree of hearing loss at birth or in the pre-lingual age group. Hearing loss is categorized as syndromic or non-syndromic hearing loss. The present study was done to identify and diagnose children with SNHL and study the etiological profile, so that all necessary timely precautions may be taken as SNHL in pediatric age group affects not only development of speech and language, but also emotional, social and behavioural development.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> A cross-sectional observational study was carried out in Department of ENT of a tertiary care centre, in 50 children with congenital SNHL. Data on epidemiological and etiological factors were collected. All cases were analyzed for detailed history and underwent clinical and audiological assessment.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Majority of cases presented between 2 and 4 years of age, however age of detection of congenital deafness by parents was most commonly observed in 6-12 months of age. Out of 50 cases, the maximum number of cases [14 (28%)] were having history of antenatal complications, 11 (22%) cases were having adverse perinatal and postnatal history, while in remaining cases, the etiological factors remained undetermined. In one case associated syndrome was observed (Van der Hoeve’s syndrome).</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> The increased occurrence of etiologies in this study was of prenatal origin, followed by perinatal origin. The present study conducted at a tertiary centre reflects the need of 'High risk' registry maintenance with active surveillance and subsequent screening for early detection of hearing loss.</p><p class="abstract"> </p>
