Background: Febrile seizures are most common among childhood seizures, accounts to 2% to 5% in children below 5 years of age. Iron deficiency can cause many neurological deficits and may lower the seizure threshold. The present study was conducted to determine the iron status in children with febrile seizures. Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pediatrics, HIMS, Dehradun, over a period of 12 month from January 2018 to December 2018. A total of 105 children of age group 6 month to 5 years, coming to pediatrics department were included in the study. Total study subjects were divided into two groups, Group I (febrile seizure) and Group II (other than febrile seizure).  A consecutive sampling method was done for selection of study subjects. Results: In Group I (febrile seizure), the number of males were 71.7% while females were 28.3% with male: female ratio of 2.5:1. In Group I (febrile seizure), 61.7% of subjects had deficient iron level while 38.3% of subjects had normal serum iron level. Our study shows significantly low mean serum ferritin and mean serum iron level in subjects with febrile seizures. Conclusions: We concluded that iron deficiency is more common in febrile seizures and there is a positive association between serum iron level and febrile seizures.

Objectives: Malnutrition is a common condition among children and iron status varies in different types of malnutrition. So the present study is aimed to find the different iron status among severe malnourished children in our context. Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study was done in the Paediatrics ward Chittagong Medical College Hospital in a period of 6 months from January to July 2013 among the 50 cases of malnourished children of age range between 1 to 5 years and Weight for Height Z score(WHZ) was <-2  SD. Sampling technique was continuous purposive sampling. Venous blood was collected to assay the different iron profile mainly serum iron level, total iron binding capacity(TIBC) and transferrin saturation(TSAT). Data was analyzed after correction by SPSS-19. Results: Among the 50 study children of different age groups 15 patients were 1 to 2 years, 18 patients were 2 to 3 years, 10 patients were 3 to 4 years and 7 patients were at 4-5 years of age groups. Among the patients, 29 (58%) of patients were female and 21(42%) of the patients were male. Most of the children were from the families of low socioeconomic status 38(76%). 2(4%) children were from upper middle class who had step mother. Among the selected patients the dominating clinical features were anemia was found among 45(90%) of patients which was mild(66.6%), moderate(26.6%) and severe(6.6%). Skin changes(32%), eye  changes (10%) and hair changes(48%) were also found. Among the 50 study subjects prelacteal feeding was given among 43(86%) children, breast feeding was given 45(90%), exclusive breast feeding was given to 24(48%) of children and complementary feeding after 6 months was given to 29(58%) patients. Among the 50 patients -2 to -3 SD weight for height was found in 20(40%) patients and <-3 SD was found in 30(60%) patients. Most of the children was found to have Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) 115-125 mm(50%). Iron status was measured among all patients where serum iron level was found 77.72 ± 11.22 mcgm/dl, TIBC was found 340.07 ± 22.67 mcgm/dl and transferrin saturation was found 22.38 ± 2.9 %. Iron status were measured among the different types of malnutrition where serum iron level and transferrin saturation was high among all patients with malnutrition while TIBC was lower than standard level in all patients. Different biochemical status were measured among the different types of malnutrition where serum total protein, serum albumin, Hb% were lower than standard level in all patients. Conclusion: Change in different iron status is a common findings in malnourished children. Screening of all children for anemia and providing iron and folic acid (IFA) or multiple micronutrients (MMN) supplements to children and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) should be addressed at all level to overcome the situation.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/cmoshmcj.v13i3.21024

Menopause is very important turning phase in the life of a female and is associated with hormonal changes. These hormones affect the overall personality however menopause is also associated with varied menopausal symptoms. Menopause women are a high risk group for iron level disturbance in your bodies. This was descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to determine the serum iron level in menopause women. Following informed consent, fifty subjects in menopause period, and sex matched fifty healthy premenopausal subjects as controls were enrolled. Serum iron was measured using spectrophotometer. Mean of serum iron level was significantly lower among menopause women when compared with the premenopausal women (control) (P.value 0.04). There was significant changing in serum iron level according to age duration (P.value 0.000). We observed changes in iron level between menopausal women when compared with premenopausal women, this study confirm iron deficiency among menopause women. Also observed that the level of serum iron decreased in certain age just after beginning menopausethen increased in certain age and return also to decrease with increased of age.

Background Pneumonia is an infectious disease often occuringin children under five years of age. At the time of infection,pro-inflammatory cytokines are released. It is thought that thesepro-inflammatory cytokines cause changes to iron homeostasisin the body. Objective To determine a correlation between CRP and serumiron levels in children with pneumonia. Methods An analytical, cross-sectional study was performedin children aged 6 months-5 years with severe pneumonia atSanglah Hospital, Denpasar, Bali from April-November 2010.Laboratory examinations included CRP and serum iron levels. The correlation between CRP and serum iron levels was analyzedby Pearson's correlation. Results From 69 children with severe pneumonia, 23 childrenfulfilled the inclusion criteria. Subjects' median CRP level was9.22 mg/Land median serum iron level was 25.55 ug/dL. Thecoefficient correlation between CRP and serum iron levels was-0.580 (P=0.004). The determination coefficient value was0.316.Conclusion In children with severe pneumonia, CRP levelcorrelates negatively with serum iron levels. [Paediatr lndones.2012;52:38-42).

Objective: Fever alone can lead to rare serious complications in children, such as febrile seizures. The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge, beliefs, and behavior of parents toward fever and its management. Methods: A cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire was applied over a period of 3 months, from January to March 2018, to parents who were living in Saudi Arabia. The inclusion criteria were a parent who is a resident of Saudi Arabia, with at least one child aged 6 years or less, while incomplete questionnaires, having a child aged more than 6 years, or parents who were not living in Saudi Arabia were excluded. Results: A total of 656 parents completed the questionnaire. More than two-thirds of the subjects were female, the majority of whom were aged between 25–33 years old. The best-reported place to measure the temperature of children was the armpit (46%), followed by the ear (28%) and the mouth (10.7%). More than half of the parents considered their children feverish at a temperature of 38 °C. The majority of parents (79.7%) reported that the most serious side effects of fever were seizure, brain damage (39.3%), coma (29.9%), dehydration (29.7%), and death (25%). The most common method used to measure a child’s temperature was an electronic thermometer (62.3%). The most common antipyretic was paracetamol (84.5%). Conclusions: Our study demonstrates the good knowledge of parents in identifying a feverish temperature using the recommended route and tools for measuring body temperature.

Aim and Objective: To assess the level of awareness among local adult population (orthodontically untreated) regarding orthodontic treatment and procedures. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was planned by accessing 100 subjects comprising of 2 groups (50 male and 50 female). After due ethical clearance, a self-structured questionnaire consisting of 17 questions was given to a group of randomly selected 100 individuals with an age range of 20 to 30 years. Results: The overall awareness of orthodontics as a speciality among both the groups was only 52% to 56%. Statistically insignificant difference was found in the knowledge and awareness of orthodontic treatment among both male and female subjects, that is, Group I and II. Also, those who knew about the orthodontic treatment did not opt for it because of high cost and longer duration involved. Conclusion: More than half of the population is unaware of the scope of orthodontic treatment, and thus, they do not seek any assistance. Hence, more efforts are needed to create awareness about orthodontics and the associated benefits.

ABSTRACT HAART (Highly active antiretroviral therapy) has transformed a fatal disease to a chronic, manageable disease. But long term toxicities are emerging after prolonged exposure to antiretroviral therapy(ART). Adverse metabolic effects like dyslipidemia, increased blood pressure, and insulin resistance(IR) have been attributed to HAART. Therefore, the use of HAART raises concerns regarding metabolic disorders and cardiovascular risk in HIV(Human immunodeficiency virus) infected patients. Objective: To determine the prevalence of insulin resistance in a cohort of HIV infected patients on HAART as compared to HAART naïve PLHIV(People living with HIV) Methods: A cross sectional study includes 53 subjects, out of which 26 were PLHIV on ART –Group I, 27 were ART naïve PLHIV-Group II was conducted. Insulin resistance was determined by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) mathematical model. Statistical analysis was performed to assess the association between demographic, clinical characteristics, laboratory results and insulin resistance. Results: 69.5 % PLHIV on HAART showed IR, as compared to 37 % of ART naïve PLHIV (p= 0.01). MetS(Metabolic Syndrome) was found in 53.8% among PLHIV on ART , compared to 11.1% among ART naïve PLHIV(p= 0.001) .In the multivariate analysis, presence of metabolic syndrome was found to be directly associated with insulin resistance.
