Background: The incidences of some non communicable diseases like diabetes mellitus, obesity, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases have been rising in the country since last few decades due to the unhealthy lifestyle of the people. Researches conducted among medical and nursing students shown that even though they are aware about the consequences of practicing unhealthy lifestyle but still they do not follow the suggested guidelines for healthy lifestyle. To assess lifestyle behaviour related to dietary pattern, physical activity, substance use, sleep, stress management, among MBBS and nursing students. NEIGRIHMS, a tertiary care institute in the capital city of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya, Shillong.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 313 participants by using a pre-tested self-administered questionnaire. The data was analyzed using the software Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) 21 version.Results: In this study, 189 (60.4%) students reported sedentary activity of spending ≥2 hours per day on phone, tablets, laptops, television, computers, etc and majority of them (59.7% and 57.2%) use the gadgets for social and whatsapp messaging respectively. Only 18 (5.8%) participants had reported regular physical activity (5 times a week) when asked about the previous month.Conclusions: Sedentary lifestyle, lack of any physical activity, use of gadgets like mobiles, laptops, etc for activities like social media, Whatsapp, unhealthy eating habits were found to be prevalent among the medical students.

AbstractIntroduction. Nurses need to encourage patients to lead a healthy lifestyle, hence it is important that as nursing students they are already aware of the importance of physical activity. The purpose of the study was to investigate the physical activities of nursing students.Aim. The aim of the study was to find out in what state physical activity of nursing students is and to find out what are their main reasons for lack of physical activity.Material and methods. We conducted a cross-sectional observational study using a mixed methods design. The quantitative data was collected using the survey method with a convenience sample of 123 students and used descriptive and inferential statistics for the analysis. For the qualitative data we used a Grounded Theory Method with semi-structured interviews on purposive samples of four students.Results and conclusions. In the quantitative part of this study we found a significantly higher proportion of outdoor physical activity in comparison to indoor physical activity (p < 0.001). The qualitative part contains the main categories of physical activity implementation, as well as three sub-categories: attitude to physical activity, barriers and incentives. Nursing students do not do physical activities regularly due to lack of time, obligations at the university, time of the year and finances.

Students are regarded as frequent users of mobile phones which has proven to be a convenient and acceptable method to promote healthy lifestyle. Students usually engage in relatively high levels of risky behavior and make unhealthy lifestyle choices, a study that investigates how health students access health information is necessary. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional study which was undertaken among third-year nursing students from three nurses training institutions in Ghana. A total of 270 students participated in the study. Most of the respondents who were currently subscribers of the health messages reported that they usually received health information on reproductive health issues, nutrition, and practicing safe sex. Most of the health students revealed that they needed more information on safe sex, diet, managing weight, and stress management. The results also show that health students are likely to remember and share short messages with friends. The findings serve as an &lsquo;eye-opener&rsquo; for health educators and mobile service providers concerning factors that should be taken into consideration when framing health text messages that will attract health students.

There is limited understanding about the obesity-related behaviors of diet, physical activity, and sedentary behavior in Korean American women. The purpose of this study was to cluster obesity-related behavior patterns of Korean American women and to examine group differences in acculturation, socioeconomic status (SES), and body mass index (BMI). A secondary analysis from a cross-sectional study was conducted using two-step cluster analysis for clustering groups. A total of 137 Korean American women ( M age = 42.7 years, SD = 3.9 years; M BMI = 23.1 kg/m2, SD = 3.1 kg/m2; 47.7% BMI ⩾ 23 kg/m2) participated. Three clusters were identified: healthy lifestyle, unhealthy lifestyle, and low physical activity but healthy diet group. The unhealthy lifestyle group was more likely to have high acculturation compared with other groups ( p = .03). SES and BMI were not significantly different between groups. Further intervention is needed to improve obesity-related behaviors of acculturated Korean American women.

Background: In addition, Health promoting behaviours among the nursing students may affect the quality of patient education. Therefore, this study was undertaken to determine the health-promoting lifestyle behaviours of nursing students in a tertiary care institute, Maharashtra.Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 124 nursing students. Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile Proforma (HPLP)was prepared which consists of two parts, Part I deals with the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants  and Part II of the proforma deals with Health-promoting lifestyle information which was a modified version of Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II). It consists of 46 items divided into 7 subscales (Health responsibility, Physical activity, Food practices, Spiritual growth, Self-concept, Inter personal relations and Stress management). Internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) of this tool was 0.8197. Permission of Institute Ethical Committee was taken. Descriptive statistics were used to describe HPLP. Data was analyzed by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Mann Whitney test. Results: Majority 89(71.77%) were have good HPLP score and 29(23.39%) were excellent category. The mean overall (Total) HPLP score was 62.27±9.66 (range 33-87). The highest mean score in the subscale were for self-concept and spiritual growth. The lowest scores were for food practices and physical activity. Highly significant difference (p<0.0001) was found between overall mean HPLP scores among the different age groups.Conclusions: These nursing students had reasonably good orientations towards health behaviours. Attention need to be paid for healthier food choices. Health promotion planning to motivate students for regular physical activity with the purpose of promoting health and preventing diseases is necessary.

e-Health literacy has become more important in promoting healthy lifestyles in recent years. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of undergraduate nursing students’ e-Health literacy on healthy lifestyle behaviours. This cross-sectional study was conducted during the 2016–2017 academic year at a Nursing Department in the Faculty of Health Sciences in Istanbul. The study population consisted of 232 undergraduate nursing students. The study sample was 205 students who volunteered to participate in the research. The data were collected using the Structured Questionnaire Form, the e-Health Literacy Scale in Adolescent and the Adolescent Lifestyle Profile Scale. The mean score of the e-Health Literacy Scale in Adolescent was 29.50 ± 5.02. The mean total score of the Adolescent Lifestyle Profile was 112.11 ± 14.66. There was a positive correlation between students’ Internet attitudes and general health-promoting lifestyle ( r = 0.273; p < 0.01), indicating the higher the students’ e-Health literacy, the higher their levels of healthy lifestyle behaviours. The result showed that e-Health literacy is an important parameter in promoting healthy lifestyle behaviours of nursing students.

Background: Unhealthy lifestyles are a global concern. This study measured the prevalence and factors associated with an unhealthy lifestyle in Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia. Methods: An interview-based, cross-sectional study was conducted with 968 males and 2029 females, aged 30–75 years, covering 18 primary health care centers in Riyadh. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the significant determinants associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. Results: Overall, men were 1.49 (1.28, 1.74) times at higher risk of an unhealthy lifestyle compared to women. Men reporting unhealthy lifestyle were 2.1 (1.3, 3.4) and 1.5 (1.0, 2.6) times more likely than men with healthy lifestyle to cite not enjoying physical activity, lack of social support, and not having enough information about a healthy diet [1.5 (1.0, 2.0)], whereas those ≥ 45 years age group were 30 times less likely to report unhealthy lifestyle [0.7 (0.5, 0.9)]. In contrast, in women aged ≥ 45 years [1.3 (1.1, 1.7)], lack of motivation [1.3 (1.1, 1.7)], feeling conscious while exercising [2.0 (1.4, 2.9)], not enjoying healthy food [1.6 (1.3, 2.1)], and no family support to prepare healthy food [1.4 (1.1, 1.8)] were significantly associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. Conclusions: In a Saudi sample, younger men and older women are at higher risk of an unhealthy lifestyle. In addition to self-motivation, combined strategies to promote physical activity and healthy eating are required to improve lifestyle.

Abstract Background: Lockdown measures were implemented in many countries to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, such restrictions could precipitate unintended negative consequences on lifestyle behaviors. The main objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and determinants of unhealthy behavior changes during the COVID-19 lockdown among residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey of adults residing in the UAE was carried out during lockdown (n=2060). Using a multi-component questionnaire, the collected data included questions regarding the following lifestyle changes: Increased dietary intake, increased weight, decreased physical activity, decreased sleep, and increased smoking. An unhealthy lifestyle change score was calculated based on the number of unhealthy lifestyle changes each participant reported. In addition, sociodemographic and living conditions information was collected. Descriptive statistics as well as simple and multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine the prevalence and determinants of the unhealthy lifestyle changes considered in this study.Results: Among the unhealthy lifestyle changes examined, increased food intake was the most common (31.8%), followed by decreased physical activity (30%), increased weight (29.4%), decreased sleep (20.8%), and increased smoking (21%). In addition to identifying the correlates of each of the aforementioned lifestyle changes, the results of the multiple regression linear analyses revealed the following correlates for the overall unhealthy lifestyle change score: females (β=0.32, CI: 0.22;0.42), living in an apartment (β=0.12, CI: 0.003;0.23) and being overweight/obese (β=0.24, CI: 0.15;0.32) had higher scores, while older adults (>40 years) had lower scores (β=-0.23, CI: -0.34;-0.12).Conclusion: The COVID-19 lockdown has resulted in a high prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle behaviors and practices among UAE residents. The findings of this study provided the evidence base for officials to design interventions targeting high-risk groups and aiming to improve healthy lifestyle factors among residents during the pandemic.

Abstract Objective: Previous studies have reported inverse associations between certain healthy lifestyle factors and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but limited evidence showed the synergistic effect of those lifestyles. This study examined the relationship of a combination of lifestyles, expressed as Healthy Lifestyle Score (HLS), with NAFLD. Design: A community-based cross-sectional study. Questionnaires and body assessments were used to collect data on the six-item HLS (ranging from 0 to 6, where higher scores indicate better health). The HLS consists of non-smoking (no active or passive smoking), normal BMI (18·5–23·9 kg/m2), physical activity (moderate or vigorous physical activity ≥ 150 min/week), healthy diet pattern, good sleep (no insomnia or <6 months) and no anxiety (Self-rating Anxiety Scale < 50), one point each. NAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasonography. Setting: Guangzhou, China. Participants: Two thousand nine hundred and eighty-one participants aged 40–75 years. Results: The overall prevalence of NAFLD was 50·8 %. After adjusting for potential covariates, HLS was associated with lower presence of NAFLD. The OR of NAFLD for subjects with higher HLS (3, 4, 5–6 v. 0–1 points) were 0·68 (95 % CI 0·51, 0·91), 0·58 (95 % CI 0·43, 0·78) and 0·35 (95 % CI 0·25, 0·51), respectively (P-values < 0·05). Among the six items, BMI and physical activity were the strongest contributors. Sensitivity analyses showed that the association was more significant after weighting the HLS. The beneficial association remained after excluding any one of the six components or replacing BMI with waist circumference. Conclusions: Higher HLS was associated with lower presence of NAFLD, suggesting that a healthy lifestyle pattern might be beneficial to liver health.

Aim: to describe physical activity and ultra-processed foods consumption, their changes and sociodemographic predictors among adolescents from countries in Europe (Italy and Spain) and Latin America (Brazil, Chile, and Colombia) during the SARS-CoV-2-pandemic period. Methods: Cross-sectional study via web survey. International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and weekly ultra-processed food consumption data were used. To compare the frequencies of physical activity status with sociodemographic variables, a multinomial logistic and a multiple logistic regression for habitual ultra-processed foods was performed. In final models, p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Sample of 726 adolescents, mostly females (59.6%) aged 16–19 years old (54.3%). Adolescents from Latin America presented odds ratio (OR) 2.98 (CI 95% 1.80–4.94) of being inactive and those whose mothers had higher level of education were less active during lockdown [OR 0.40 (CI 95% 0.20–0.84)]. The habitual ultra-processed consumption was also high during this period in all countries, and more prevalent in Latin America. Conclusion: A higher prevalence of inactivity was observed in this population, but reductions of physical activity and habitual ultra-processed consumption during the pandemic were more pronounced in Latin America. Our findings reinforce the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle, i.e., exercise and diet, during periods of social isolation.
