Developing an interactive teaching medium is one of the solutions to deal with student diverse learning styles. This study attempted to develop an interactive medium to teach english vocabulary to young learners in the form of CD. Borg and Gall’s (1989) model of research and development which consisted of nine stages was employed. Needs analysis, planning, product development, product validation, main product revision, main field testing, operational product revision, operational field testing, and final product revision were performed. The data were gathered using interview and questionnaires. Both qualitative and quantitative data analyses were run. The result of prototype tryout to 40 fifth-grade students suggested no significant revision. Thus, the product could be tried out, at a larger scale, to 200 fifth-grade students who were selected randomly to represent ten elementary schools in Banyuwangi. Due to students different levels of proficiency, various problems appeared during the product implementation. Yet, findings of the study in general have confirmed the effectiveness of an interactive medium in improving student motivation to study English vocabulary. Keywords: Interactive medium, English vocabulary, young

Imagine that you are an air traffic controller on a busy evening, responsible for directing 100 planes per hour heading to a major metropolitan area. (see fig. 1.) your job is to keep all these planes safely separated and on time to their destinations. To do this, you must quickly and accurately solve a multitude of distancerate- time problems. This air traffic control scenario provides an exciting, challenging, and meaningful context for prealgebra and elementary algebra students to “model and solve contextualized problems using various representations” (nCTm 2000, p. 222) that address diverse learning styles and preferences as well as different levels of mathematics preparedness.

This research is aimed to develop supplementary speaking materials for fifth grade students. Belonging to educational research and development (R&D), this research employed a simplified six steps of Borg and Gall’s model (1983). The six steps are as follow (1) conducting needs analysis, (2) constructing course grid, (3) developing course grid based on the combination of the 2006 Curriculum (KTSP) and the result of the needs analysis for young learners. The English speaking material was designed based on the principles of Language Curriculum Design proposed by Nation & Macalister (2010) and task-based language teaching proposed by Willis (2003) (4) the tryout of the course grid to the fifth grade students at SD Kanisius Ganjuran Bantul, (5) evaluation and revision of course grid by the experts, and (6) final product. The finding shows that the product relies much on pertaining KD of the 2006 Curriculum and the teacher expected that the students need to improve speaking skill since they have opportunity to speak English. English speaking materials are in line with student’s wants who are young learners. The strengths of this product help students to improve their speaking skill especially the vocabularies, the language function used in spoken language. The tasks can fascinate the students on teaching and learning process of English lesson.

Previous studies have shown that students, who have high levels of metacognitive awareness, perform better achievement levels than other students. Besides, it can be said that learning styles may affect metacognitive awareness of students. In the literature, studies about metacognition focused on problem solving and learners’ mathematical achievement, improvement in metacognition, and supporting some learning environments with metacognition. Therefore, in this study, relationship between metacognitive differences, learning styles, genders and mathematics grades of the fifth grade students are examined. This study was designed as descriptive study and conducted by using relational screening model. The participants consist of 330 fifth grade students from public middle schools. Data collection tools of this study are “Metacognitive Awareness Scale for Children” and “Learning Styles Scale”. The data gathered through these scales were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 21.0. As a result, there is no statistically significant relationship between learning styles and gender. But, there is statistically significant relationship between learning styles-mathematics grades, metacognitive awareness levels (MAL)—grade levels in mathematics, MAL-gender and MAL-learning styles. Learning styles may affect individuals’ way of thinking in every moment of the life. Thus, this result has a significant part in education. In fact, parents, teachers and administrators should know metacognitive awareness and learning styles. Thus, knowing these terms can be helpful to understand how the problematic and unsuccessful students show undesirable behaviors since those students’ learning styles and metacognitive awareness levels are not considered.
