Plan International is a leading international development organisation that applies a rights based approach to achieving its mission of achieving lasting improvements in the quality of life of children in developing countries. In the summer of 2011, Plan in the UK made a decision to close down its development education programme, as part of a process of re-strategising to focus its organisational resources. Plan UK's development education programme illustrates many of the challenges that International Development Organisations (IDOs) face. Development education practice led by many IDOs tends to emphasise the relationship of education to social change and development goals. But if development education is perceived in terms of questioning and challenging dominant ideologies, and promoting differing voices and perspectives, then it can only be assessed in terms of its educational impact.

Development education emerged from the desire by governments with aid budgets and development non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to secure greater public understanding and support for international development. As a field of learning, development education became increasingly influenced by the thinking of Paulo Freire and allied to areas such as global education, global learning and global citizenship, has become a feature of education practice within a number of European countries. But this influence has been linked primarily to the work of NGOs. If development education and its related terms are to have any major educational influence there is a need to re-conceptualise the field with the context of a learning framework, the knowledge society and the impact of globalisation on education.

This chapter explores the relationship between international development and global health. Contrary to the view that development implies ‘good change’, this chapter argues that the discourse of development masks the destructive and exploitative practices of wealthy countries at the expense of poorer ones. These practices, and the unregulated capitalist economic system that they are part of, have created massive inequalities between and within countries, and potentially catastrophic climate change. Both of these outcomes are detrimental to global health and the millennium development goals and sustainable development goals do not challenge these dynamics. While the Sustainable Development Goals acknowledge that inequality and climate change are serious threats to the future of humanity, they fail to address the economic system that created them. Notwithstanding, it is possible that the enormity and proximity of the threat posed by inequality and global warming will energise a counter movement to create what Kate Raworth terms ‘an ecologically safe and socially just space’ for the global population while there is still time.

AbstractInternational development agencies argue that “good governance” is crucial to attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but there are many ways to define and measure good governance. The paper begins by examining the World Bank’s minimal state conception of governance and then proposes an alternative approach based on strengthening state capacity. The paper tests this framework by developing a provisional Millennium Governance Index (MGI) for 126 countries. In comparative empirical analysis, the MGI has noticeably higher statistical correlations than the World Bank’s governance indicators on six out of seven MDGs even after controlling for per capita income levels.

Quality education is the 4th goal of Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. ‘Child to Child approach’ is based on the idea of children working together with other children to bring about change. Child to Child Education Programme of Community Health Department of a tertiary care hospital was started in 1999 in a slum community. It provided a conducive-atmosphere to students. This has helped in promoting all-round development of children. The aim of this retrospective study is to show the effectiveness of this programme.Method: This retrospective study was conducted from 15th January 2020 to 31st March 2020, in a slum community of Delhi, for 11362 school going children, who have attended CCEd. programme between the years 1999 to 2019. The Secondary Data was collected. It was cleaned, and tabulated with frequency tables and percentages using MS-Excel. The significance and Odd’s ratio were calculated on MedCalc software. Results: Immediate impact of CCEd. on students was seen as the percentage of merit holders increased and was found to be between 5.23% – 13.26%. They were exposed to several Curricular, Extra-curricular, Social & Health Activities during the years they were part of CCEd. The qualifications of alumni of CCEd. programme showed that 116(76.31%) out of 152 are holding either a graduate degree or post graduates degree. The monthly income of alumni showed that a maximum number of alumni [36(23.68%)] earn Rs. 15000- 20000/ per month and some 6(3.95%) earn Rs. >45000-50000/- per month. They had always desired to be at par with other children/students of their age from privileged communities which they have attained in life. They are happy and satisfied.

Задачей данной статьи является рассмотрение лингвопрагматических особенностей комментариев пользователей социальной сети «Твиттер» на выход Великобритании из ЕС. Анализ данных комментариев с лингвопрагматической точки зрения представляет интерес, так как показывает наиболее актуальную картину отношения пользователей социальных сетей к произошедшему событию. Приоритетными методами анализа лингвопрагматического потенциала Интернет-комментариев для нас являются: описательный метод, метод прагматического анализа, т.е. рассмотрение языкового материала в его непосредственном контексте в функциональном аспекте, метод частичной выборки, метод контекстологического описания. Контекстуальный метод был использован с целью установления особенностей комментариев в среде социальной сети «Твиттер»; описательный метод - для выявления непосредственного отношения пользователей социальных сетей к выходу Великобритании из ЕС; частичной выборки - для отбора наиболее эффективных и целостных комментариев с позиции прагматики и их реализации в данном контексте. Проведённое исследование позволило установить, что большинство людей удовлетворено результатами выхода Великобритании из ЕС и положительно отзывается об этом событии. Об этом свидетельствует как большое количество экспрессивов, использованных в интернет-комментариях в отношении данного события, так и активное употребление в них оценочной лексики. Результаты проведённого исследования могут быть применены в теоретических работах по описанию характеристик речевых актов, в курсе теоретической грамматики, стилистики, прагмалингвистики. The purpose of this article is to review the linguo-pragmatic features of Brexit represented in the comments in Twitter. Their analysis from a linguistic-pragmatic point of view may be of interest, since it shows the most relevant picture of the relationship of social network users for the event. The priority methods for analyzing the linguo-pragmatic potential of Internet comments for us are: a descriptive method, a pragmatic analysis method, i.e. consideration of linguistic material in its immediate context in the functional aspect, partial sampling method, contextual description method. The contextual method was used to establish the characteristics of comments on the Twitter social network; descriptive method was used to identify the direct relationship of social network users to the UK exit from the EU; partial sampling was used to select the most effective and holistic comments from the position of pragmatics and their implementation in this context. The study found that most people are satisfied with the results of the UK exit from the EU and respond positively to this event. The results of the study can be applied in theoretical works on the description of the characteristics of speech acts, in the course of theoretical grammar, stylistics, pragmalinguistics.

Background: Length of stay (LOS) on admission to psychiatric intensive care in the UK varies widely, with few studies examining the relationship of LOS to clinical outcomes. Data from two South London male PICUs delivering care with the contrasting philosophies of rapid turnover versus slower stepdown were investigated to determine if additional LOS correlated with clinical benefit.Method: Data on admissions to the PICUs were collected over six months and assessed for outliers and then for variance using Levene’s test. The variables were compared using independent samples t-tests. Pearson correlations were alsocalculated for the major variables.Results: Mean LOS was 8.4 days higher on PICU 1 (p = 0.026) and readmission rates to hospital 6 months post discharge were 27% higher on PICU 1 (p = 0.025). There were no strong correlations between LOS on either PICU and the other five variables examined.Conclusion: It was intuitive to expect better outcomes in the PICU with a slower turnover where complex patients could receive an extended period of re-evaluation of pharmacological treatments and engagement with services and could achieve a fuller recovery from the episode. However, this group had no reduction in LOS following step-down to the wards, readmission rates to PICU during in the index episode or re-hospitalisation six months following discharge. The PICU with a policy of rapid-turnover, concentrating on reducing acuity and risk and rapid step down, was equally effective on the measures evaluated.

INTRODUCTION Timing of intervention in symptomatic carotid disease is critical. The UK Department of Health's National Stroke Strategy published in December 2007 recommends urgent carotid intervention within 48 h, in appropriate patients, who have suffered a transient ischaemic attack (TIA), amaurosis fugax or minor stroke. Despite the running of a rapid-access clinic for patients with symptoms of TIA, the time from symptom to surgery is rarely less than 2 weeks. To date, there has been little published research on the UK public response to the symptoms of TIA, and no study at all of the response of primary care to such patients. The aim of this study was to ascertain both these responses to see whether a 48-h target is achievable. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 402 men attending our aortic aneurysm screening sessions were asked to complete a questionnaire requesting their most likely response to an episode of amaurosis fugax or TIA. All 45 GP practices in the hospital catchment area were asked how they would respond to patients requesting to be seen with the symptoms used in the questionnaire. RESULTS Nearly one in six patients would ignore the symptom unless it recurred, approximately half would request a GP appointment and a third would see an optician if they had amaurosis fugax. The mean waiting time to see a GP was 2 days for a routine appointment and within 24 h for an emergency appointment. CONCLUSIONS It is clear that a significant number of people would ignore the first symptom of carotid ischaemia; for those with amaurosis fugax, nearly a third would initially seek help from their optician. Those given a routine GP appointment would have to wait a minimum of 2 days. If the Department of Health is serious about reducing the incidence of stroke and introducing a target of 48 h from symptom to treatment, then there needs to be a wide-spread public and healthcare education programme, in particular alerting opticians and GP receptionists that these symptoms constitute a medical emergency.
