AbstractThere is a long tradition in social policy of discussing and critiquing the notion of ‘deservingness’ in relation to ‘the poor’. This paper will apply such debates to ‘the rich’ to consider the grounds on which this group might be considered ‘deserving’. The paper identifies three sets of arguments. The first set of arguments concerns the appropriateness of rewarding merit/hard work/effort/risk-taking etc. The second concerns more consequentialist/economic arguments about providing incentives for wealth creation. And the third considers the character and behaviour of the rich. As well as discussing the potential criteria for deservingness, the paper will also debate whether the degree of income and wealth gained by the rich is deserved. Finally, the paper will discuss the social policy implications, including taxation policies, which emerge from this debate.

This research is motivated by the high unemployment rate in Indonesia at the diploma and undergraduate level due to limited employment opportunities. This study aims to determine whether entrepreneurial skills (risk taking skills, innovation skills, leadership skills, communication skills, and problem solving skills) affect students' entrepreneurial attitudes. Quantitative methods are used to answer the research problems. The respondents were 97 Accounting students who were taken using accidental sampling technique while the analysis used multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that risk taking skills and innovation skills had an effect on entrepreneurial attitudes. Meanwhile, leadership skills, communication skills, and problem solving skills have no effect on entrepreneurial attitudes.

The goal of counseling, among other thing,   is to develop an internal locus of control of a clients. Research, especially in western cultures, has shown that those with an internal locus of control were correlated to their characters, they are:  hard work, problem solving skilss, optimistic, engaging in social activities and high in achievement motivation. However, for clients who are not from western cultures a tendency to foster an internal locus of control in the counseling process should be considered properly. This paper describes how to  enhance client’s internal locus of control for those who do not embrace western cultures

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the evidence of accounting undergraduates’ attitude toward entrepreneurship, in particular, whether entrepreneurial skills developed in accounting education engender cognition of skills and intentions of starting a business. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a χ2 test statistic used to evaluate a logistic regression to gauge the effect of delivering six entrepreneurial skills (risk taking, critical thinking, problem solving, innovation, autonomy and need for achievement) on entrepreneurship attitudes (cognition of skills and intentions). Data consist of questionnaire responses obtained from 668 undergraduates attending Egyptian and Bahraini universities. Findings The results reveal that accounting students perceive the following four entrepreneurial skills as a key for starting their own business: risk taking, critical thinking, problem solving and innovation. In addition, Egyptian students incline toward cognition, whereas Bahraini students head toward intentions. Practical implications Some changes to accounting curricula are proposed to enhance entrepreneurial intention. Originality/value This paper offers a new contribution as it focuses on the challenges and the considerations in the Arab World Universities.

Problem solving lies at the heart of mathematical learning. Children need opportunities to write, discuss, and solve problems on a regular basis (NCTM 2000). The problems must incorporate grade-appropriate content and be “accessible and engaging to the students, building on what they know and can do” (Lester and Charles 2003, p. xi). Teachers also play a key role in establishing a classroom environment that encourages children to solve problems in different ways and develop habits of mind that include persistence, risk taking, and a questioning attitude (Whitin and Whitin 2003). This article describes how a class of second- and third-grade students learned to create and solve their own problems.

This paper argues that the creative process is a complex interaction of thinking, emotion and intuition and the major characteristic is the balancing of opposites which integrate the process. The creative process can only be maintained by holding the opposites in a state of dynamic tension which can be called a “tolerance of ambiguity”. This tension of opposing forces charges the creative expression with power avoiding the degeneration which occurs when the balance of opposites is uneven. In considering the practical applications in the classroom, it would seem that the encouragement of a learning atmosphere which generates alternative modes of thinking and problem solving strategies and an acceptance of openended situations encourages the creative act. The classroom needs to be “emotionally charged”, pupils encouraged to pursue individual ideas in an atmosphere of adventure and risk-taking.
