Preparation for the profession of a nurse requires, in addition to knowledge, the development of specific skills; many of them are primarily connected to cognitive abilities. In the context of effective education, one of the key facts is to recognise the intelligence structure of nursing students. The aim of the research was to analyse the intelligence structure in nursing students, to compare scores in individual areas of intelligence with the norm, to identify problematic areas of intelligence, and to suggest possibilities for intervention in education. The research sample consisted of 266 women aged 19 to 43 years old (average age = 20.10 years) - current students of the study field of nursing at the bachelor's degree. Data collection was carried out in the years 2014 - 2019. To measure the structure of intelligence, a standardized IST-70 questionnaire was used, focusing on two meta constructs - reasoning and memory. Subtests of numerical, verbal, and figural intelligence were analysed within the meta construct of reasoning. The value of the gross score of the total intelligence level of the examined group (M = 84.95; SD = 19.87) is comparable (t = -1.58; sig. = 0.114) with the population norm (M = 87; SD = 25). The research sample of nursing students scored statistically significantly higher in the meta construct of memory (t = 7.84; sig. = 0.000) and significantly lower in the meta construct of reasoning (t = -3.876, sig. = 0.000). The most significant deficits were present in figural and numerical intelligence. In view of the results achieved, we recommend introducing interventions in the area of training future nurses, which should be aimed at compensating for deficits in figural and numerical intelligence.

The data were collected through questionnaires and interview. The learning videos were validated by expert judges and were also done field testing to the 42 nursing students. The data were analyzed descriptively qualitative. The result of the research showed that 1) 64.5% of the students would like to combine the material between general English and specific topics about nursing, 2) The developed learning video consisted of some parts such as opening, learning objectives, content, conversation, vocabularies, and closing. The result of expert judges both in media and material were 87.5% and 93.5% which were categorized as excellent materials. It is expected that the learning video can be applied in teaching and learning process.

Introductory Information Form and Organizational Commitment Scale were used for data collection. Findings of the study were evaluated via IBM SPSS Statistics 22. Results Among 71 persons who participated in the study, it was determined that 91.5% were male, 50.7% were at the age of 40 or older, 81.7% were married, 67.6% had bachelor's degree, 63.4% were search and rescue technicians, and 50.7% were employed by their current organization for 10 years or less. Regarding the employees, it was found that 25.4% had very good organizational commitment while 54.9% faced issues in relation to the organizational commitment. OCS point average of the employees was 3.07±0.20 and the obtained Cronbach Alfa internal consistency coefficient of the scale was 0.678. OCS points of those employed for 12 years or longer in total were determined to be high at statistically significant level. Also, OCS points of those who did not face any issue in relation to the Organizational Commitment were found to be high at a statistically significant level against those who faced issues. Conclusions It is important to ensure work satisfaction, provide harmonization, and avert chaos and stress for boosting the organizational commitment. Therefore, the managers should conduct activities intended to boost the employee commitment levels within the organization. Key messages Disaster is a significant public health issue and disaster employees are special. From the East Asian social and cultural perspectives and contexts, this study aimed to understand the relationships and behaviors between nursing students’ sense of filial piety and their decision-making behind selecting nursing education as their major. Forty-two traditional-age nursing students (i.e., six men and 36 women) at their final year of a bachelor’s degree program in nursing were invited. The findings indicated that many nursing students disliked their university major and the potential career pathway as a nursing professional, as none of them selected the major based on their choice and interest. The environmental context and family’s recommendations were the major impacts to influence the decision-making process of the participants. The result also indicated that filial piety, parents’ recommendations, and elderly people’s suggestions were the key factors to influence the selections and decisions of university major and career development pathways. The study provided a blueprint for related staff and professionals to create and design career counselling and services for East Asian youths to enable life investment and development.
