ABSTRACT

This research aimed to evaluate the supplementation of fermented Lemna sp. meal (FLM) in the artificial diet on the growth rate of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. The research design used was complete randomized design consisting of four treatments; A (0% FLM), B (20% FLM), C (30% FLM), and D (40% FLM) in triplicates. The parameters observed were the nutritional composition of LFM, daily growth rate (DGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (SR), and water quality. Fermentation with Effective Microorganism 4 (EM4) has increased crude protein and crude lipid of FLM respectively 5.60% and 5.76%. However it decreased the crude fiber of FLM up to 15.27%. The result suggested that supplementation of FLM 0–40% in the artificial diet could give DGR 0.81–1.20%, FCR 2.48–2.97; and SR 72%–84% in Nile tilapia. The addition of 40% LFM showed the best result among all treatments.

Key words: Lemna meal, EM4, fermentation, Nile tilapia fry

ABSTRAK

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengevaluasi penggunaan tepung Lemna sp. fermentasi (TLF) pada pakan buatan terhadap laju pertumbuhan ikan nila Oreochromis niloticus. Two experiments were conducted consecutively to evaluate and compare the mean weight (MWT), daily growth rate (DGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival and production rate (PR) in the non-improved strain (NS) of the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Cichlidae) with those in the Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) strain and the FaST selected tilapia (FaST), from the swim-up fry stage to fish weight of 1.0 g (Experiment 1) and from fish weight of 1.0 to 20 g (Experiment 2). In both experiments, results showed the GIFT and FaST strains to have significantly higher MWT, faster DGR, lower FCR and higher PR than those of the NS. Unlike in Experiment 1, survival rates did not differ significantly among the three strains. In Experiment 1, the improvements in the FaST for the MWT, DGR and PR over those for the NS were 77.9, 72.9 and 33.6%, respectively. In Experiment 2, the improvements for the same parameters were 58.7, 57.8 and 54.5%, respectively. These results indicate the advantage and potential of culturing the FaST or the GIFT strain in Kuwait for improving the production of fresh tilapia, reducing the production cost and increasing the profitability of tilapia farms.

AbstractDue to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, probiotics in aquaculture are used for the prevention of infectious microbial diseases and substitute for antibiotics and chemotherapeutics. In this study, we evaluated the effect of probiotic Bacillus spp. isolated from African nightcrawler (Eudrilus eugeniae) on the growth, feed utilization, and disease resistance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Four probiotic strains of Bacillus spp. (ANSCI9, BFAR9, RM3, and RM10) were individually incorporated in the commercial diet (control) at 108 CFU g-1 of feed. The experimental fish were fed at 5% of their body weight for 30 days, and subjected to a 14-day Aeromonas hydrophila challenge test afterward. The results showed the probiotic-treated groups have higher (P<0.05) average body weight (ABW) (4.51 ± 0.34 g) than the control (3.89 ± 0.17 g). The BFAR9 (2.73 ± 0.26 g) and RM10 (3.15 ± 0.30 g) showed higher (P<0.05) absolute growth (AG) than the control (2.20 ± 0.16 g). Furthermore, RM10 had higher (P<0.05) specific growth rate (SGR) (1.60 ± 0.10 % day-1) and relative growth rate (RGR) (181.39 ± 18.16 %) than the control (SGR=1.29 ± 0.07 % day-1; RGR=129.84 ± 9.77 %). Consequently, RM10 had significantly lower (P<0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR) (1.99 ± 0.13) than the control (2.60 ± 0.16). The challenge test revealed that the probiotic-treated groups have higher (P<0.05) survival (81.25 ± 9.57 %) than the control (55.00 ± 19.15 %). These results revealed that the probiotic Bacillus spp. isolated from E. eugeniae improved the growth, feed utilization, and the disease resistance of Nile tilapia.

The study was conducted at the fish farm of the Department of Fish Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural Technology and Fish Sciences, Al-Neelain University. The purpose of the study is to compare the growth performance of different local strains of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to provide the necessary information for conducting research leading to genetic improvement of the locally farmed Nile tilapia. Fish fry used in the study were spawned by brooders collected from, Jebel Aulia Dam Reservoir (White Nile strain A) , Sennar Dam Reservoir (Sennar strain B), Lake Nubia (Halfa strain C) and khashm elgirba reservoier( Khashm elgirba strain D). The study was conducted for six weeks in twelve happas, each stocked with 30 fry in three replicates for each strain, averaging 5 g. Fish were fed by diet with a protein level of 35%. Statistical analysis showed Sennar strain was the best growth rate with a percent weight gain of 1529%, followed by white nile strain with a percent weight gain of 1114%, followed by khashm elgerba strain with a percent weight gain of 993% and finally Halfa strain with a percent weight gain of 829%. Daily Growth Rate gain was 0.9g/day for sennar strain, followed by other strain with no significant(≥0.05). Food Conversion Ratios (FCR) were best in sennar and white nile strain ,survival rate with the same no significant(≥0.05) between treatments. finally results indicated that there is significant( ≤ 0.05) between treatments so sennar and white nile strains is better than two strains in this study.

The performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) raised in cages furnished with an automatic dispenser, supplied at different frequencies (once per hour and once every two hours) and periods (daytime, nighttime and both) was evaluated. Eighteen 1.0m³ cages were placed into a 2000m² pond, two meters deep with a 5% water exchange. One hundred and seventy tilapias, with initial weight of 16.0±4.9g, were dispersed into each 1m³ cage and the feed ration was adjusted every 21 days with biometry. Data was collected from March to July (autumn and winter). Significant difference to final weight (P<0.05) among treatments was observed. The increase in feeding frequency improves the productive performance of Nile tilapias in cages and permitted better management of the food. The better feed conversion rate for high feeding frequency (24 times day-1) can result in saving up to 360kg of food for each ton of fish produced, increasing the economic sustenance for tilapia culture and suggesting less environmental pollution.

Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) meal was substituted for soybean meal in the practical diets for Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings. Six iso-nitrogenous diets (35% crude protein) were formulated in which heat-treated soybean meal was replaced at varying levels (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%) with protein from pressure-cooked and sun dried pigeon meal (23% crude protein). Nile tilapia fed 60% pigeon pea meal had significantly (P<0.01) better growth response and nutrient utilisation. Growth was depressed in low pigeon pea fish and also in high (above 60%) pigeon pea diets. The poorest feed conversion ratio was observed from 100% pigeon pea fed fish.
