Bruguiera gymnorrhiza is a mangrove species that can be used to rehabilitate mangrove forest. The information about the response of mangrove seedlings to the factors that affect its growth is needed to ensure its survival rate. This study aimed to examine the response of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza seedlings to the factors that affect its growth such as media and shade level. This research used a Completely Randomized Factorial Design (CRFD) with the treatments of growing media (A) and shade level (N) of 3 levels on each factor, that are mud (A0); mud and compost (A1); and mud, compost, sand (A2); also 0% shade (N0); 50% shade (N1); and 70% shade (N2) on the 3 months old seedlings. The results showed that the treatment of shade level significantly affected the growth response of B. gymnorrhiza seedlings, while the treatment of growing media and interaction of both treatments did not show a significant response. The 0% shade level gave the best growth response of B. gymnorrhiza seedlings. Keywords: Growth rate, light level, mangrove, rehabilitation, seedbed

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and accumulation of ions in lettuce grown in different hydroponic systems and recirculation frequencies. The experimental design was randomized blocks with 8 treatments and 4 replicates. The evaluated hydroponic systems were Nutrient Flow Technique (NFT) and an adapted Deep Flow Technique (DFT), the latter with recirculation frequencies of 0.25, 2 and 4 h. Both systems used fresh water and brackish water. Plant growth, accumulation of inorganic solutes (Na+, K+, Cl- and NO3-) and the correlation between dry matter production and Na+/K+ and Cl-/NO3- were evaluated. The salinity of the water used to prepare the nutrient solution caused decrease in growth and K+ and NO3- levels, and increased contents of Na+ and Cl- in the plants. When using fresh water the highest dry matter production was obtained in the NFT system. In case of brackish water the adapted DFT system increased the production, in relation to NFT system (at same recirculation frequency: 0.25 h). It was found that the choice of the type of hydroponic system and recirculation interval for the cultivation of lettuce depends on the quality of the water used to prepare the nutrient solution.

Merino ewes were mated at pasture and then fed in pens either a maintenance or an 80 per cent maintenance ration of wheat grain three times a week. Half the animals at each feeding level were offered Spotted Gum (Eucalyptus maculata) sawdust. Addition of sawdust to the ration did not affect liveweight change and the wool growth rate of ewes or the birth weight and growth rate of lambs. It did, however, affect the long-term survival rate of ewes. Of the ewes that died after three months of survival feeding, four were in groups fed wheat alone and one in a group fed sawdust with the wheat. The survival rate and growth rate of lambs in all treatments were poor.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the use of drilled slanted holes filled with different substrates in the revegetation of rock slopes. Slanted holes were drilled on rock slopes using pneumatic drillers in an abandoned limestone quarry area. These holes were filled with twelve different substrates, treated with Trichoderma harzianum. One climbing plant of Ivy (Hedera rhombea), a native woody plant (Lespedeza cyrtobotrya), three native herbaceous plants (Dianthus barbatus, Siberian chrysanthemum and Aster koraiensis) and one exotic grass plant (Festuca arundinacea) were planted in each of the soils. Six months after planting, only Ivy, Festuca arundinacea, Lespedeza cyrtobotrya and Dianthus barbatus were still observed growing on the soils, while the other plant species had already died in all the 12 soil treatments. Leaf mold soil + 50% Trichoderma harzianum provide the best conditions for revegetation of Festuca arundinacea, as this plant had its highest mean height, high survival rate, with impressive growth rate on this soil. Lespedeza cyrtobotrya also had its most favorable growth on Leaf mold soil + 50% T. harzianum. Mixed soil + 100% T. harzianum provide the best conditions for revegetation of Ivy. Leaf mold soil + 100% T. harzianum provide the best condition for revegetation of Dianthus barbatus as it had its highest mean height, highest growth rate and high survival rate on this soil. Siberian chrysanthemum and Aster koraiensis had the worse results as all of the plants died within a short period of time after planting. Ivy had the highest mean height, followed by Festuca arundinacea. The planted Ivy and Festuca arundinacea now form the vegetation of the research site which together with the substrate is now providing habitat to some wildlife like some species of centipedes, earthworms, insects and wild plants. Less than one year after planting, F. arundinacea already produced flowers and seeds which would further increase the plant population after dispersal and germination. Drilling slanted holes on rock slopes is therefore a feasible method to be used for revegetation and restoration of degraded quarries. The revegetation of steep rock slopes of quarries is a very challenging activity. However, the method of drilling slanted holes on rock slopes is a feasible method to be used for restoration of degraded quarries. These holes could serve in soil deposition and water retention that will further enhance plant growth. Methods of improving seed germination as well as enhancing growth of plants are also imperative in revegetation success of such degraded landscapes. Different percentage mixtures of T. harzianum in different soils could enhance plant growth depending on the target plant species. Different substrates could thus be used in such revegetation process depending on the target plant species.Revegetation would provide habitat and improve landscape beauty and stability, thus it is important for successful restoration of rock slopes

<p>Vetiver grass and it usages have been widely investigated in many researches as the preferred plant species due to its known efficiency, low cost, the ease of availability and spread. This research aimed to use four different vetiver grass (<em>Vetiveria zizanioides</em>) ecotypes to remove cyanide (CN-)-contaminated water for improve its quality. Growth capability, tolerance and removal efficiency were evaluated. The results showed that the vetiver grass had a 100% survival rate for one month after planting. Songkhlar3 had the longest leaves, followed by Surat-Thani, Sri Lanka and Monto, respectively. Root lengths of all ecotypes showed no significant differences (p ≤ 0.05). All vetiver grass ecotypes could potentially purify CN--contaminated water at lower concentrations of ≤ 35 mg CN-/L. The Monto ecotype had the highest CN- removal efficiency at all CN- concentration levels, showing 100% CN- removal from the 5-45 mg CN-/L contaminated water samples within 2-5 weeks growth. The tolerance of vetiver grass to CN- was a more important factor than growth rate when selecting a vetiver grass ecotype for CN- phytoremediation.</p>

The wori plant is one of the plants of the fabaceace group that grows abundantly in Sangihe and has potential to be used as a source of fish feed. The protein content of wori leaves is 25.53%, so it has the potential to become vegetable protein for fish. The main obstacle encountered when utilizing wori plant leaves is the high carbohydrate content of 48.51% so that it can affect the digestion process of fish, nutrient absorption which lead to low fish growth. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of wori femerntation leaf meal on the specific growth rate and survival of tilapia. The experimental design used was a completely randomized design (CRD). The treatments consisted of three treatments and three replications, namely the content of fermented wori leaf powder, A (control) 10%, then B fermented wori leaf powder (10%), and C fermented wori leaf powder (20%). Specific growth rate and feed efficiency were tested using ANOVA, while survival rate was analyzed descriptively. The results of this study indicate that the addition of fermented wori powder in the feed can increase the value of the specific growth rate of tilapia and feed utilization efficiency with the highest value in treatment C, namely SGR 1.94% / day. Meanwhile, for all treatments the survival rate was 100%.
