The term jihad fi sabîl al-Lâh is often used to refer to physical war in the path of God. The word, as it is derived from the Qs. al-Tawbah (9): 60, in fact connotes specific and general meanings. The specific meaning of it commonly found in classical ulema’s interpretation is related to the war. This interpretation is based on historical evidence and supported by the literal meaning of Qur’an and the hadith. But such a meaning is now criticized and regarded as going beyond the conceptual boundary of jihad in Islam. This article seeks to explore the general meaning of the term in the works of classical and contemporary Muslim scholars, aimed at offering a more contextual meaning. It shows that the term does not always necessarily mean the physical war in the name of God or religion, but it can be meant as education, human welfare, and social development.

This paper aims at investigating the contextual meaning of the Confucian moral values of “仁ˮ (ren) and “义ˮ (yi) in the situational contexts of Hikayat Tiga Negara. Situational context in a literary text is the episode that describes an event. This story centres on the themes of the values “仁ˮ (ren) and “义ˮ (yi), together with the descriptions of these values through the practices, beliefs and behaviour of characters in the situational contexts. Previous studies have shown that the interpretation of the contextual meaning of Confucian moral values is based on the sentential contexts to convey the general contextual meaning. The other problem is the subjective interpretation of the contextual meaning of the values, based on the motives and cultural contexts of the translators. In order to fill the gap in the studies on the interpretation of the meaning of values, which is confined to sentential contexts and subjective interpretation, this study focuses on the interpretation of the contextual meaning of the values based on their original meaning in the situational contexts. The research employs the method of synchronic system-based contextual meaning analysis to interpret the synchronic contextual meaning of “仁ˮ (ren) and“义ˮ (yi). By classifying the situational contexts into general context, distinctive context and extralinguistic context, the particular contextual meaning can be identified. The findings reveal that the contextual meanings of “仁ˮ (ren) are divided into general meaning, specific meaning and extralinguistic meaning, while the contextual meanings of “义ˮ (yi) are divided into general meaning, specific meaning, thematic meaning and interpersonal relationship-based meaning upon the classification of situational contexts. Besides this, the interaction between the intralinguistic and extralinguistic situational contexts also affects the interpretation of the contextual meaning of the values. This study presents the importance of discourse context to meaning in recreating Confucian moral values in the situational contexts of Hikayat Tiga Negara.

English is rich of idioms. Learning idioms is considered an integral part of vocabulary learning. Idioms of animals are very popular in everyday English and ESL and EFL learners should encounter them .The problem of this study is due to the fact that ESL and EFL learners may be unable to identify the intended meaning of idioms of animals since they are culture-bound and have colloquial sense. For example, “to beat a dead horse” has the abstract meaning  talk about a topic other people think it is over whereas the contexual meaning is a failure or loser man. The current paper aims at identifying and figuring out the contextual meaning of idioms of animal. It is concluded:(1)ESL and EFL learners are unable to master these idioms because understanding their contextual meaning is difficult,(2) these idioms are culture-specific matter that needs further awareness of translators, ESL and EFL learners,(3)many ESL and EFL learners understand the literal meaning depending on dictionary meaning

This article discusses the proposition of Syara’ concerning polygamy. The aim is to find out the relationship between literal meaning of the text and the socio-historical context underlying the issuance of the provosion. This study utilizes historical, textual approach to obtain a vivid, comprehensive perspective of the literal and contextual meaning. As it is already known, the proposition of polygamy is Surah an-Nisa’: [4]: 3 plus a number of hadiths relating the issue. According to history, the reasons underlying the revelation of Surah an-Nisa’: [4]: 3, actually, was to reprimand companions who wanted to marry orphans in their guardianship but unwilling to give dowry as much as when they married other women. Thus, the verse was not solely about polygamy or limitation of the number of wives, but it also contained a criticism against contemporary tradition which tended to be arbitrary in releasing lust. Furthermore, polygamy itself is not recommended nor even impulsive in Islam. As the above-mentioned shura implies, Islam prefers monogamy than polygamy, as it imposes difficult condition for those who want to do polygamy

Abstract The study of human-self, the core of human existence and the behaviour which is generated from therein is considered to be one of the most important issues in which human beings have ever engaged. Philosophers and scientists have long been attempting to find out and answer the questions with respect to human selves. These attempts resulted in different findings according to the framework which was employed to study the subject matter.  Attitude towards behavior-terminology in general and human behaviour in particular varies in a very diverse way which has put this issue as a problem where special focus needs to be carried out. It is crucial to identify the actual meaning of "behavior" and the differences in these two perspectives; the shariah and the psychology, especially when it comes to understanding the behavioral disorders. This piece of writing is an attempt to discover how traditional Islamic books dealt with the term "behavioral disorders" and how a disordered person was treated in comparison with the standpoint of psychologists in this regard. This study finds that the term "behavior" in traditional Islamic books has a general meaning that includes every action of humans, whereas the term "disorder" has its specific meaning based on the shariah framework and how it encompasses those behaviors as disorders which are prespribed so by psychologists and they are not in conflict with the shariah. Keywords: Behavior, Psychology, knowledge of Shariah, Psychological Disorder, Behavioral Disorder.

“Internet” is an instance of a virtual and networked organization. We understand the meanings of virtual and network, however, in a broader sense than the specific meaning of information and computer technology (ICT). This chapter, in fact, is based on the interplay between such specific and general meaning associations. As a result of this interplay with the concepts of virtual and networked organizations and technologies, some emerging issues about Internet, as well as “NVOs” will be brought up. Our comments on these issues will hopefully draw attention to certain aspects of the Internet as one important example of the networked and virtual organizations. Some of these aspects would normally be considered as less related to scientific studies or knowledge than to other studies, or bodies of knowledge. For instance, some resources that we incorporate into our discussion are considered (social) science fiction.

In some languages, major changes in the veterinary profession are mirrored in the names used by those engaged in this branch of medicine during different periods of history. These names were most often derived from the animal species that were of predominant importance in any given period. The terms veterinarius, mulomedicus (mule healer) and hippiater (horse doctor) reflect the major importance of these animals in Roman and Greek antiquity. Draft and pack animals (Latin: veterina) played a major role in the improvement of mankind’s living conditions. Without their help, men and women had to do all the heavy labor with the help only of primitive instruments, and they had to transport all burdens themselves. Horses became of paramount importance in warfare. Chivalry (cheval in French: horse) attained a high status in mediaeval society. This high esteem for horses, horse riding and everything associated with it continued even after the horse had lost its military significance. We see this in terms such as maréchal in French (meaning both ‘shoeing smith’ and ‘field-marshal’), marshal in English, maarschalk in Dutch, derived from an old Germanic word for ‘keeper of the horses’ but originally meaning ‘horse boy’. Similar titles were paardenmeester for ‘horse master’ in Dutch, and Rossarzt or Pferdarzt in German. The terms veterinarian and vétérinaire, which are generally used in English and French, do not differentiate between the species and types of animals involved. This term, derived from the learned Latin medicus veterinarius, was not created by the public, but rather was promoted by the early veterinary schools and professional organizations. Its supposedly general meaning was most probably a factor that guided the choice of its use. Nobody alluded to its primary significance (etymology) involving the care of ‘beasts of burden’, and it is a pity that almost no one any longer is aware of this. The enormous role that these humble animals once played in the liberation of mankind from slavish labor, and from slavery itself, remains practically unknown. The term ‘veterinary’ has lost nothing of its forgotten original content. Knowledge about this may help to rehabilitate the humble donkeys, the mules and other beasts of burden who delivered mankind from much arduous labor ... and became our slaves.

The lyrics of Coldplay’s selected songs tell us about humanity’s social life which contains love, sadness, happiness, spirit and others. In the lyrics of Coldplay’s selected songs, figurative languages are helpful to understand the song. The existence of figurative language is not to complicate the understanding of lyrics but to simplify and clear the understanding of lyrics. The song is very suitable for English Learners who want to improve their English skills in analyzing lyrics that contain figurative language. From the explanation above can be concluded that in analyzing lyrics besides finding figurative language in lyrics, the meanings of the song that contain figurative languages and messages of the song can be understood.

Abstract: Some interpreters in Java tend to use the mystical style of tasawwuf-kejawen to interpretate the Quran. One of the interpreters is Kiai Mustojo, Campurejo, Sambit, Ponorogo. This article presents the theory of tasawwuf and sufi interpretation, the manungguling kawula-Gusti concept, Kiai Mustojo manuscript identification, and the analysis of manunggaling kawula-Gusti concept in the Kiai Mustojo’s interpretation on al-Fatiha. This interpretation is once of historical evidence that there is an intense contact between Islamic teaching and Javanese mysticism in the inland of Java and it’s as legitimation of his mystical-Kejawen teachings. His interpretation will always reveal the meaning behind the literal meaning of a word in al-Fatiha. Even though, it has a meaning more than connotative meaning, it doesn’t mean the denotative meaning that exist in the Quran is not so important. It causes the connotative meaning becomes a gateway for the entrance to understand of other meanings.
