The study investigates the influence of road intersections on pedestrian accessibility in urban-rural fringe areas. An evaluation method to support planners and decision makers in the classification of crossing areas according to their effect on walking and in the prioritization of improvement interventions is proposed. In these peripheral parts of towns, pedestrians are almost ignored and people depend on car use for any necessity. Initiatives to improve livability can include the design of walkable friendly environments aiming at offering potential users good levels of security, comfort and convenience when walking to destinations. These spatial requirements have to be provided along road segments and even more on crossing areas which represent sensitive points of the entire connection system with a hindering influence on people’s propensity to walk. Starting with spatial basic interventions aiming at enhancing the continuity, safety and quality of pedestrian paths it is possible to reduce the physical and perceptual distance which separates fringe contexts from the rest of the city leading to a progressive integration of urban functions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has strongly affected the dynamics of Emergency Departments (EDs) worldwide and has accentuated the need for tackling different operational inefficiencies that decrease the quality of care provided to infected patients. The EDs continue to struggle against this outbreak by implementing strategies maximizing their performance within an uncertain healthcare environment. The efforts, however, have remained insufficient in view of the growing number of admissions and increased severity of the coronavirus disease. Therefore, the primary aim of this paper is to review the literature on process improvement interventions focused on increasing the ED response to the current COVID-19 outbreak to delineate future research lines based on the gaps detected in the practical scenario. Therefore, we applied the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to perform a review containing the research papers published between December 2019 and April 2021 using ISI Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, IEEE, Google Scholar, and Science Direct databases. The articles were further classified taking into account the research domain, primary aim, journal, and publication year. A total of 65 papers disseminated in 51 journals were concluded to satisfy the inclusion criteria. Our review found that most applications have been directed towards predicting the health outcomes in COVID-19 patients through machine learning and data analytics techniques. In the overarching pandemic, healthcare decision makers are strongly recommended to integrate artificial intelligence techniques with approaches from the operations research (OR) and quality management domains to upgrade the ED performance under social-economic restrictions.

In Italy, southern cities are often characterized by widespread phenomena of illegal settlements, that have resulted among other things in a worsening of the quality of life of the urban-rural interface, and the decline of the considerable architectural interest of the entire city. .The goal of this paper is to propose an approach that would help requalify what is already built, to make the best of what has been realized by focusing on the quality and liveability of the city. This approach is based on a particular methodology based on the promotion of Urban Complex Programs (PUC), which provide a system of development rights resulting from the demolition of unfinished illegal settlements . The benefits of this approach are many, including improvements in efficiencies and safety, meeting demands of environmental protection and reducing consumption of energy, responding to the highest standards of protection and seismic risk prevention. They can be obtained only on one condition: that they are based on a system of collective and public conveniences in accordance with the principle of sustainability in multiple dimensions (environmental, cultural, technological, political, institutional, social and economic). But for this approach to be viable it needs also to be convenient for the private actors as well. With this paper we hope to provide first an original approach that can improve the conditions of cities burdened with the problems of illegal settlements that is both sustainable and convenient and, second, an instrument that can provide information for both the public and private sectors on the fairness of the procedure and their mutual interest in pursuing this approach.

PurposeWhile ISO 9001 standard certification is approaching saturation in developed countries, other nations are still struggling with the implementation of ISO 9001. This study provides insights into countries with a very low number of registered certifications to understand the reasons behind the limited implementations, more particularly using evidence from Yemen. The objective of the study is to assess: the awareness, understanding, motivations, barriers and the benefits of implementing ISO 9001.Design/methodology/approachA survey was conducted to measure awareness levels, understanding, driving factors, barriers and the benefits of ISO 9001. Data collection was carried out through the classification of targeted firms into two separate categories, certified and noncertified organizations. The classification of firms was conducted to enrich the understanding from two different perspectives. A total of 72 responses, from companies ranging in size from large to small, and in both the private and public sectors, were analyzed using the descriptive and multiple correspondence analysis (MCA).FindingsThe data analysis showed that the limited implementation of ISO 9001 certifications could be due to several internal and external factors such as the relatively low awareness level of the certification and guidelines, and the inconsistency of understanding the certification purpose. The benefits focused solely on improving the quality of systems efficiency and increasing quality awareness, and not on internationalization.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of this work provide the groundwork for decision-makers to understand the drivers and challenges of ISO 9001 to plan corrective actions and contribute to promote and increase the number of certified organizations in similar countries and economies. While the data in this study were collected in the context of one country, the methodology and framework used in this study can be utilized by other researchers to collect data in similar countries with a low number of ISO 9001 certifications.Originality/valueThis research is one of the very few that addresses the limited implementation of ISO 9001 in the Middle East and North Africa region and Yemen in particular.

Fixing the accessibility is a standard issue of transport analysis, which can be of interest to many socioeconomic applications. In the paper we propose and discuss accessibility and other indicators‐based urban transport system analysis and GIS (geographic information systems) calculation method for indicating problematic transportation zones in Vilnius city. The main parameter is time‐based accessibility from/to the central part of Vilnius and other transport zones in the city. Created GIS application computes the ranks for transport zones of Vilnius city according to accessibility and Vilnius statistics in these zones (street network density in city zones, number of working places, number of equipped parking places, number of attractive objects in transportation zones). The GIS decision support system is based on 2 calculation methods Topsis(Technique for OrderPreference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) and SAW (Simple Additive Weighting). Application of transportation zones analysis improves the quality of basic environment statistics and fills many data gaps related to urban statistics, providing information to decision‐makers and the general public concerning key factors determining the state of urban transportation environment. This paper outlines criteria and models used in Vilnius to develop urban transportation indicators and the reasons why the selected indicators represent the first important step to achieve a comprehensive system of indicators of urban transportation sustainability in Vilnius city. This model could be integrated in systems of urban transport planning and sustainable development planning. Buvo identifikuojami Vilniaus miesto transporto rajonai, probleminiai susisiekimo sistemos požiūriu. Analizei atlikti buvo naudojami šie rodikliai: gatvių tinklo tankis, visuomeninio transporto tinklo tankis, automobiliu statymo vietų tankis, kelionių skaičius kiekviename transporto rajone, gatvių tinklo ilgis, tenkantis 1000 transporto rajono gyventojų, dirbančiųjų ir gyventojų tankių disproporcija transporto rajone, transporto rajono pasiekiamumas nuo miesto centro. GIS aplikacija su integruotais daugiakriteriniais sprendimų paramos sistemos skaičiavimo metodais, kaip paprastųjų svorių sudėjimo SAW ir idealiojo taško TOPSIS, ranguoja Vilniaus miesto transporto rajonus ir leidžia identifikuoti problemines susisiekimo sistemos požiūriu miesto vietas. Plečiant sukurta aplikacija, naudojant daugiau indikatorių galima sukurti bendra indikatorių sistemą miestų planavimo uždavinių sprendimams pagrįsti.

Introduction:Two main demographic phenomena have substantially changed the condition of elderly: the growth of the urban population and the increase in longevity.Objective:The aim of the present review is to investigate how the elderly living in the cities perceive the sense of insecurity compared to those who reside in rural areas, and their Quality of Life (QoL).Method:Studies published from January 2011 to August 2017 were identified on Google and PubMed combining the following terms: “elderly urban/rural QoL” or “old age urban/rural QoL”.Results:We found 18 different papers published. However, there was only one study on how the elderly perceive the violence in the city. Studies on quality of life were not univocal. Studies on depressive disorders in old age were most homogeneous showing a condition worsening in the cities. A study on the perception of violence in US showed in residents of cities and neighborhoods with the entertainment arena and casinos an increase of criminality perception. In contrast, the crime decreased in both above-mentioned neighborhoods.Conclusion:The condition of elderly in the cities is changed considerably in the recent years. It is estimated that this trend will increase in the coming years. We do not know how older people are experiencing these changes and how they perceive the persistence of violence in the cities. Future researches must satisfy this need by addressing the issue with appropriate methodological tools. This is a public health priority.

Intermodal Transport (IT) allows savings in energy, time and costs, improves the quality of services and supports sustainable development of the transport system. In order to make IT more competitive it is necessary to support the development of intermodal transport terminal (ITT), whereby it is very important to make adequate decision on its location. This paper proposes a framework for the selection of the ITT location which would be most appropriate for the various stakeholders (investors, users, administration and residents). They often have conflicting goals and interests, so it is necessary to define a large number of criteria for the evaluation. A novel hybrid MCDM model that combines fuzzy Delphi, fuzzy Delphi based fuzzy ANP (fuzzy DANP) and fuzzy Delphi based fuzzy Višekriterijumska Optimizacija i kompromisno Rešenje (fuzzy DVIKOR) methods is developed in this paper with the aim of providing support to decision makers. The model is developed in the fuzzy environment in order to overcome the ambiguity and uncertainty of the decision makers’ evaluations of the criteria, sub-criteria and alternatives. The validity and applicability of the model is demonstrated by successfully resolving the problem of selecting the location of the ITT in the City of Belgrade.

Ecosystem services (ES) are the benefits people gain from ecosystems, which are essential to human well-being. ES concept allows us to demonstrate more clearly the importance of nature, understand its benefits and justify its preservation. Knowledge on ecosystem’s capacity to provide services and the demand for these services allows us more effectively organize spatial planning, avoid conflicts and protect the ecosystems from degradation. This article reviews one of the ES assessment and mapping method called ES matrix model and presents its application to Vilnius case study. Using the method and expert knowledge twelve ES were assessed and mapped. The review of the method has shown that it can be applied at different scales and to evaluate several ES simultaneously. In previous studies, the method was applied to assess ES capacities both locally and at European level, often using expert knowledge for ES evaluation. Method application for the case study confirms that the results of the evaluation mainly depends on primary data, i.e. the scale and accuracy of the land used map and the sufficient sample of experts. The case study showed that the lowest concentration of evaluated services is in the center of Vilnius town and surrounding neighborhoods, and as the distance from the city center increases, the number of ES increases as well. An ES richness map, which shows how many different services exist in a given area, showed a low number of ES in the central and western part of the city (a maximum 6 out of 12 services rated). Additional research, however, is needed to assess the quality of the existing services. Such an assessment of the ES potential and the quality of the services can serve as an additional tool for territorial planning and efficient use of green urban spaces.

In a highly competitive global scenario, companies are looking for ways to optimize their processes, reducing costs and improving the quality of their products. In this context, several tools were developed to improve the companies' inventory management, one of them being the ABC Curve as a method to hierarchize the inventory according to the intrinsic value of each material, allowing the analysis of how the supply should work. from each supplier. The present work aims to perform the application of the ABC curve method in the zagaia restaurant, located in the city of Manaus / AM that will allow the stock hierarchy and will be through the classification of the raw material according to its annual demand and its Unit price. As a premise, a bibliographic research on content planning and inventory management was adopted, as well as an on-site study to catalog the items and check with the restaurant management, their values, their quantities and how the chain works. of supplies. The results presented confirm that Class A items need greater attention due to their high value, while Class C items do not impact financially as much, but need attention to be properly allocated within inventory as they represent the largest volume.

Urban population growth requires an appropriate and suitable place for future population to cope with the expected urban expansion of major cities in developing countries, and to identify an indicator urban expansion to guide planners, architects and decision makers, and help them reduce negative effects of city expansion with improvement in the ability to live in cities.  The density (population and building), fragmentation (saturation and openness) and compactness (proximity and cohesion) are the most important indicators of urban expansion of cities, which gives a clear perception of how city expands and possibility of adopting the most suitable ones when updating or preparing master lans. Most cities, especially Arab ones, suffer from excessive urban expansion, resulting in various urban problems affecting quality of life, services and city performance, which is the problem of research. This research is aimed at identifying factors influencing urban expansion of cities in developing countries when preparing for their future expansion, by analyzing the indicators of urban expansion of a set of cities to reach appropriate indicators for urban expansion sustainable future of the city to ensure orderly development of cities and make them more productive, more comprehensive and sustainable in upcoming decades.

The Government of Pontianak City efforts in carrying out the mission of creating quality and representative urban infrastructure are a program to improve and assets development of public facilities. It formed of infrastructure and are currently functioning for public service facilities. One of the assets of this public facility is the 40-years-old Pontianak Kapuas Indah Market, located right on the edge of the Kapuas River. This market in its past is known as the Kapuas Indah Shopping Center, it experienced decreasing of quality or function shifting, along with the development of cities that grow the new economic areas that are more modern and millennial. At present, this market is still functioning but only limited to certain consumer market segments. Therefore, it is necessary to have repairing and developing in order to be able functioning optimally as the city public asset. In order to improve and redevelop the facilities in this market, the post-occupancy evaluation method needs for market physical facilities and infrastructure, this steps for developing physical facilities meet more targets in the future. This study uses qualitative exploratory methods with an investigative approach to analyze the aspect of behavior users of buildings and it functions of the Kapuas Indah Market and from these results of the analysis determined the problem handling strategies in it. The results of this study are strategies and recomendations for improving functional performance with regard to compatibility or suitability, namely the concept of statements about the quality of the relationship between user activities and the physical building of the Kapuas Indah Market. Second, adjustments related to human activities in the room, behavior related to equipment and possibilities of adaptation to the demands of building physics and the natural environment around the Kapuas Indah Market. Keywords: behavior; function; performance
