As a consequence of the global sanitary crisis in early 2020, universities had to tackle with a sudden shift in their teaching-learning strategies so that the preset competences could be fulfilled. This study presents the learning outcomes of the tasks implemented, student experiences and feedback, as well as some reflections from the instructors with a holistic perspective of the courses due to the measures and adaptations adopted. Six courses taught at Civil Engineering degrees of three universities, two from Spain and one from Peru, are analyzed. The teaching and evaluation strategies are described and some reflections are made by comparing the student’s performance with the previous course. Although the shift to online learning had to be made from day to day, with no time for preparation, the experience has proved that online learning can be beneficial in some aspects and have probably come to stay, although some others are difficult to replace with respect to face-to-face learning, especially students’ engagement and motivation.

The significance of this study relies on a description of the challenges that arose due to the global public health and an assessment of the results of the implemented strategies to account for both teaching and evaluation in modules of civil engineering. After the acquired experience, new questions have arisen, e.g., what type of content is (and what is not) adequate or suitable for online exams? What features have come to stay? Has higher education taken a step forward to tomorrow’s education?

During the covid 19 pandemic, online learning, and its terms are not strange things in East Nusa Tenggara. The establishment of Learning from home was started from March to June 2020 to prevent the spread of Covid-19. This research is a case study of eleven English teachers who serve in certain areas around East Nusa Tenggara; five teachers of Senior High School/Vocational School, five teachers of Junior High School, and one Elementary School teacher. Its purpose was to describe the methods in the English teaching-learning process in a pandemic situation. The data of this descriptive study were obtained through WhatsApp non-facial interviews and analyzed by reducing and categorizing similar results. The results showed that the teachers applied two methods, both offline and online.  From March to June 2020, the teachers managed their classes in the online process by using some applications. Whereas, in the Uneven Semester 2020-2021, the safe areas return to face-to-face learning in limited learning duration. The most prominent obstacle in online learning was the limitation of gadgets since the students did not have adequate tools. Financially, parents' income has decreased for they could not meet the needs of internet data packages. Students who returned to their hometown also experienced problems regarding network services. These conditions cause more obstacles to teachers in managing online classes. Therefore, teachers implemented several strategies to solve these obstacles by creating a WhatsApp group or arranging them into small groups based on their locations and there were students with smartphones to browse for materials or send the assignments. In addition, students were allowed to consult and collect the assignments at school based on scheduled agreements. The situation continues to Even Semester 2020-2021 and gradually turned to limited face-to-face meetings at school in the Uneven Semester 2021-2022.

Scientific learning is difficult to be applied in an ideal way because of the lack of learning time. One of the solutions to overcome it is by using blended learning that integrated into problem-based learning. This study aims to comprehend the effectivity of problem-based online learning (PBOL) to improve learning outcomes, and it’s efficiency to reduce the time of face to face learning. The used media was WhatsApp because of its simplicity, and the students have been familiar with it. The seventy students of the 10th grade of SMAN 1 Kelua were being sampled in this study based on a saturation sampling technique and divided into three classes. This was a quasi-experimental study with single factor multiple-treatment design. The premier data of this study were learning outcomes and the total time of learning in the class. The data of learning outcomes were obtained by test and be analyzed by one-way ANOVA to detect the effect of PBOL on the learning outcomes. The data of learning time were gained by observation and documentation and be analyzed in a descriptive way to know the efficiency of PBOL. The analyzed result showed sig. value is 0.04, that is means PBOL, and PBL produces learning outcomes which have significantly different from conventional learning. On the other side, even the learning outcomes of PBOL is equal as learning outcomes of PBL, and it’s learning time is fewer than the PBL’s. From both of the facts, we can conclude that the PBOL assisted by WhatsApp is effective in enhancing learning outcomes and more efficient to be used.
