After government control over the media was liberalized in 1998, Indonesian journalists had a new mandate to explore new issues and foster public debate. Several studies had found evidence that women’s health worsened from 1997–99, yet media coverage of this topic was limited. To increase press coverage of reproductive health (RH) topics, the Population Council conducted an 18-month media project in collaboration with the State Ministry for Women’s Empowerment and other key agencies. The project focused on improving RH knowledge and reporting skills among 22 print journalists. Project staff monitored RH coverage in 22 major newspapers, magazines, and tabloids. After Indonesian journalists received background information and training on RH issues, the quality of their coverage improved. However, as noted in this brief, continued efforts are needed to provide media representatives with ideas for news stories and feature articles and training in use of research findings.

Introduction. Stomatoprothetic dentures are one of the factors of oral health and life quality of people of all ages. The aim of the paper is to make a connection between the oral health quality and quality of life on one side and the type of denture on the other. Material and Methods. This research study was conducted on the sample of 360 patients singled out in three numerically identical groups as follows: group I - patients treated with fixed dentures, group II - patients treated with mobile dentures, and group III - patients treated with both fixed and mobile dentures. The oral health quality was observed via five parameters: anamnestic data, symptoms of ill-functioning of basic functions in stomatogenic system (chewing and speech), extra oral examination, intraoral examination, and dental abilities. For some oral health quality parameters, the index of quality was determined. Results. Analyses of our three target groups of patients indicated that the patients from group I (treated with fixed dentures) suffered the least negative effects in line with the observed parameters; they are followed by patients from group III (combined dentures) and patients from group II (mobile dentures), respectively. Conclusion. Our research study showed that some oral health parameters have different impacts on health and life quality in patients treated with different stomatoprosthetic dentures.

One of the primary purposes of the studies that life science researchers carry out is to translate their findings into demonstrable impacts in the lives of the general population. If we study the mechanism of heart disease, for example, it is our hope that new therapies or preventative strategies can be created from these mechanistic data. In the field of nutrition, it is the ultimate goal to translate research findings on the health benefits of functional foods and nutraceuticals into products consumed by the public that will benefit their health, quality of life, prevent disease and prolong life. However, the pathway from research on the health benefits of specific foods or food products into industry applications is often a pathway with multiple, unexpected road blocks for the unsuspecting scientist. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to identify these obstacles that have confronted industry translation in the past by using flaxseed research as an example. The ultimate goal of the review is to alert those in research and in the food industry of these translational hindrances in order to avoid them in the future and promote a more rapid and effective translation of food/health research into marketing success.
