<p>Mindi (<em>Melia azedarach </em>L.) is one of a plant from <em>Meliaceae </em>family and has been known for its bioactive compound, such as ferulic acid. On this study, the isolation of ferulic acid and antioxidant activity test has been conducted. The aim of this study was to isolate the ferulic acid on ethanol extract of <em>Melia azedarach </em>L. leaves, determine the ferulic acid content and antioxidant activity test qualitatively. The method used in this research was isolation with hydrolysis (acid and base) and without hydrolysis, determining the phenolic acid content using TLC scanner instrument and antioxidant activity test qualitatively using DPPH radical reduction method. According to the identification using TLC and TLC scanner, the base hydrolysis fraction (HB), acid hydrolysis (HA), and without hydrolysis (HA) of ethanol extract from <em>Melia azedarach </em>L. was suspected contain the ferulic acid compound. The analysis result using TLC scanner was known to have ferulic acid content on HB, HA, and TH fraction of 15.57%,12.17%, and 9.56%, respectively. This study showed that hydrolysis affected the phenolic acid content where the HB fraction produced higher ferulic acid than HA and TH fraction. The antioxidant activity test that has been conducted qualitatively showed that ferulic acid isolates contained on each fraction actively reduce the DPPH radical.</p>

Melia azedarach L plant categorized as traditional medicinal plant is normally used as a medicine for cough, skin diseases, drug for malaria, diabetes, colon cancer, jaundice, vaginal discharge, fever and scabies. Melia azedarach leaves contain steroid, terpenoid, alkaloid, tannin, saponin, phenolic and flavonoid compounds. The purpose of this study was isolation of phenolic acid compounds and antioxidant activity test from Melia azedarach L. Leaves. The method used to isolate phenolic acid using 3 ways that were alkaline hydrolysis (HB), acid hydrolysis (HA), and without hydrolysis (TH). The separation of phenolic acid which has Rf not the same as standard phenolic acid was undertaken by preparative TLC and characterized using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, FT-IR, and LC-MS. Moreover, antioxidant test of phenolic acid using DPPH method was also conducted. The results showed that isolation of Melia azedarach L. Leaves resulted in HB, HA and TH fractions with the weight of 1.05 grams, 1.26 grams and 1.38 grams, respectively. The identification of phenolic acid which has Rf the same as standard phenolic acids was ferulic acid. While result of phenolic acid (FA) isolates which has Rf not the same as phenolic acids standard was caffeic acid after the identifying using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, FTIR and LC-MS. Qualitative antioxidant activity test showed that FA isolate had IC50 of 168,650 ppm. This result indicated that FA isolate is potential as antioxidant compound.

This study aims to find the treatment of diabetes using natural materials by exploring plants in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. his research was conducted out by extracting the Strychnos nitida G.Don stem using a method of maceration by ethanol 70%. Ethanol extract was then fractionated using n-hexane and ethyl acetate. Simplicia from maceration and fractionation results were then tested for antioxidant activity, α-glucosidase inhibition activity and identification of active compounds. The results showed that ethyl acetate fraction had the lowest IC50 value of 86.83 μg / ml. Results of the α-glucosidase activity test showed that ethyl acetate fraction and n-heksan fraction at 900 ppm had the highest percentage of inhibition of 34.23% and 33.89%. Identification using LCMS/MS method showed that ethyl acetate fraction consist of Benzenemethamine, N, N-dioctyl- as an antioxidantcompound and compound 24-methyl-5-cholestone-hexol as an antidiabetic compound. From the results of this study, we concluded that the extract of kayu ular Strychnos nitida G.Don stem has inhibition activity toward α-glucosidase enzyme.

Melastoma malabathricum and Chromolaena odorata are classified under broad-leaved weeds that are widely spread in the open land area. Melastoma malabathricum is commonly known as ‘‘senduduk’’, and C. odorata is locally known as “Pokok Kapal Terbang”. Both weeds are categorized as potential weeds as they have high nutritive value and are rich in chemical compounds. This study aimed to determine their chemical constituents and possible potential for antioxidant activity as these weeds have been reported to possess antioxidant properties. Screening of the plants was performed using standard methods and revealed the existence of various secondary metabolites such as saponins, terpenoids, phenols, tannins, and flavonoids of both weed extracts. Antioxidant activity was validated by the DPPH radical scavenging assay of M. malabathricum and C. odorata crude ethanol extract. The IC50 values for the percentage radical scavenging effects for the extracts were determined. The IC50 value of M. malabatrichum extract was 81.116 μg/mL, C. odorata was 312.903 μg/mL, Vitamin C was 31.023 μg/mL and BHA was 71.521 μg/mL respectively. The study showed that the antioxidant activity of M. malabatrichum was more potent and better than C. odorata.

The antioxidant activity and content of phenolic substances in vegetable broths were determined. Green beans, beetroots, courgettes, onions, parsley, carrots, cabbages, celery, broccoli, spinach, cauliflowers, and tomatoes were subjected to boiling. Fresh vegetables and vegetable broths were analysed for ascorbic acid content, total phenolic content, ORAC and TEAC values. Phenolic acids were quantified using HPLC. The ascorbic acid content of vegetables ranged from 5–109 mg/100 ml, while no ascorbic acids could be detected in vegetable broths. Total phenolic content was between 17–1729 mg GAE/l for all samples. ORAC and TEAC values of vegetable broths were between 0–3 µmol TE/ml and 0–2 µmol TE/ml, respectively. Gallic, chlorogenic, caffeic, p-coumaric, and ferulic acid were detected in both fresh vegetables and vegetable broths. The highest phenolic acid content was observed in water in which beetroots were boiled. It was found that the vegetable broths of beetroots, celery stalks, cabbages, parsley and broccoli harboured remarkable antioxidant activity.

This study was undertaken to estimate the antioxidant activity and total tannin content of Moringa olifera Lam. (Moringa) leaves and find a suitable extraction condition for maximum yield. Two types of solvent and three different extraction times and temperatures were experimented for extraction. Moringa leaves were oven-dried and powdered to determine the antioxidant activity in terms of total phenolic content (TPC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and DPPH radical scavenging activity and total tannin content. The maximum TPC value noted in methanol extract, and it ranges from 6.46 ± 0.34 g to 3.91±0.19 g gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100g dry sample (DM). The FRAP values varied from 211.6 ± 3.75 to 344.13 ± 3.26 mg ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/100g DM and 166.67 ± 2.90 to 224.93 ± 1.94 mg AAE/100g DM, for methanol and ethanol extract, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity ranged from 46.32 ± 1.07 to 58.09 ± 0.92% for methanol extract and 56.76 ± 1.48% to 69.72 ± 1.15% for ethanol extract. The total tannin content varied from 6.84 ± 0.05 to 10.22 ± 1.11 mg GAE/100 g dry sample and 6.77 ± 0.08 to 9.23 ± 0.51 mg GAE/ 100g DMfor methanol and ethanol extract, respectively. The highest antioxidant yield for methanol and ethanol extract of Moringa leaves differed for various conditions. Overall, Moringa leaves showed excellent antioxidant properties that can be commercially and domestically used.

Free radicals are one of the cause of various diseases. The use of synthetic antioxidant compounds could prevent the effect of the free radicals, however may cause adverse effects on the human body such as impaired liver, lung, intestinal and poisoning. Therefore antioxidant from natural resources needs to be developed. The purpose of this research was to determine the antioxidant activity and IC50 value of the ethanol extract of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxbs.) leaves. Ganitri leaf ethanol extract activity test was carried out using DPPH method with vitamin C as a standard. Antioxidant activity was determined as a decreas in the absorbance of DPPH at 517 nm wavelength after an addition of the extract with the concentrations of 20, 40, 80, and 100 ppm. The antioxidant acitivity measurement of the ganitri leaf extract showed that the linier regression equation obtained was y = 0.3669x + 29.546, r = 0.4573 while the IC50 value was 54,12 ppm. Based on the result, it is concluded that the ethanol extract of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaf showed was categorized as strong antioxidant.
