The aims of this research are to (1) identify such types of figurative language as irony and sarcasm in the novel TROSH<em> </em>and its translation in <em>Bahasa Indonesia</em>, (2) identify translation techniques used when translating the irony and sarcasm, (3) find out the translation shifts appearing as effects of the application of the translation techniques, and (4) find out the effects of the translation shifts of irony and sarcasm on translation quality considering accuracy, acceptability, and readability.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Method</strong>: The method of this study is descriptive qualitative. The source of data is a novel entitled The Return of Sherlock Holmes and its translation. The result of questionnaires from the raters that asses the translations quality also belong to the source of data in this study. The data in this study are phrase, clause, or sentence that contain irony or sarcasm in the novel The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Beside that, the information about the quality of the translation from the raters and informants is also belonged to the data. The technique in conducting the data is done by analysing the document and the questionnaires.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Result</strong>: The research findings reveal that (1) 67 data of irony and sarcasm are found in the novel The Return of Sherlock Holmes and are divided into 6 subcategories consisting of ironical understatement, non-ironical falsehood, ironical interjections, illocutionary sarcasm, propositional sarcasm, and lexical sarcasm, (2) Several translation techniques employed are established equivalence, modulation, amplification, variation, transposition, linguistic compression, borrowing, reduction, linguistic amplification, compensation, adaptation, and particularization, while some others are couplets, triplets, and quadruplets, (3) the application of the aforementioned translation techniques leads to three possibilities such as the absence of translation shifts of irony and sarcasm, translation shifts to another figurative language, and translation shifts to nonfigurative language, (4) the translation shifts give moderate positive effects on the translation quality of irony and sarcasm found in the novel The Return of Sherlock Holmes with average score of 2.64.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Conclustion</strong>: <strong>Conclusion</strong>: The result of this study shows that established equivalence is often used in translating irony and sarcasm. The application of this technique gives a good quality in the translation of irony and sarcasm because that technique can be applied based on the context of situations in the target texts. Meanwhile, established equivalence may give a poor result of the translation quality if it is combined with another technique, for examples: reduction, transposition, and modulation. The impact of the quality is caused by the translation shifting of irony and sarcasm into another figurative language or denotative form. From the analysis of this study, it can be cncluded that the translation shifting of figurative language is one of the important thing in figurative language’s translation and translation quality assessment.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: irony and sarcasm, translation techniques, shift, translation quality</p>

Translating the implied meanings in utterances is one of the trickiest situations translators may confront. One example is in translating utterances that flout the maxim of quality. When a speaker flouts the maxim of quality, they are implying further information that is not represented in the utterance. Translators use various translation techniques in order to convey the meaning of the original text in the most appropriate and acceptable form in the target text. This study investigates how translation techniques may affect the quality of a translation. The approach implemented in this study is pragmatics in translation. This study belongs to the field of descriptive qualitative research with an embedded case study. For data, we look at all the utterances which may be said to be flouting the maxim of quality in the source text and its translation. Content analysis and focus group discussion were applied as the methods to collect and analyze the data. A focus group discussion was used to assess translation quality. The majority of the data was classified as accurate and acceptable, while the rest was considered less accurate and inaccurate due to the application of the translation technique amplification (addition), discursive creation and literal translation. Some data was also found to be less acceptable due to literal translation and pure borrowing.

This study aims at identifying conjunction shifts and their impact on the translation quality of Orwell’s Animal Farm in accuracy and acceptability aspects. This descriptive qualitative research is an embedded-cased study and oriented to translation products. The data were collected by document analysis and focus group discussion and then analyzed by Spradley’s data analysis method. The results show that 207 data of conjunction shifts in terms of form, expression, function, major classification meaning, categorical meaning, and sub-categorical meaning affect translation quality. The assessment of translation quality of conjunctions that shifted in the translation of the novel Animal Farm results in an average accuracy score of 2.09 and an average acceptability score of 2.84. Even though they are less accurate, the translation results of conjunctions that shifted in the translation of the novel are quite acceptable. This implies that translators should master on form, expression, function, and meaning of conjunctions so as to produce a good quality translation result.

The quality of translation is closely related with the techniques used by the translator to tackle many obstacles in doing translation. Each technique used gives different impact in translation product. The translator has to choose the appropriate techniques in order to deliver the message accurately, clearly, and readable. This project was descriptive research which has been attempted to analyze the techniques used in translating historical romance novel Taj: A Story of Mughal India into Taj: Tragedi Di Balik Tanda Cinta Abadi by Maria M. Lubis. It used three variable factors of translation that were the two novels as objective factor, the translator as genetic factor, and the raters as affective factor to analyze, compare, rate, and score the translation techniques. The data chosen from the both novel were the sentence of both novel that consist of cultural specific items. From the analysis, it was found that there were 15 techniques used in translating the novel. These 15 techniques were adaptation 19.15%, pure borrowing 18.62%, established equivalent 9.57%, natural borrowing 8.51%, generalization 6.38%, Modulation 5.85%, particularization 5.85%, amplification 5.32%, transposition 2.66%, reduction 2.13%, inversion 2.13%, pure borrowing plus established equivalent 2.13%, description 1.60%, literal 1.60%, omission 1.60%, adaptation, pure borrowing, and omission 1.06%, amplification and pure borrowing 1.06%, natural and pure borrowing 1.06%, discursive creation, generalization and transposition, literal and generalization, pure borrowing and generalization, pure borrowing and transposition, generalization and omission, adaptation, pure borrowing and transposition each of them 0.53%. The result of research showed that the dominant technique used is adaptation since the cultural term of source language is appropriate to be translated as same equivalent into the target language. Teknik penerjemahan tersebut adalah adaptation 19.15%, pure borrowing 18.62%, established equivalent 9.57%, natural borrowing 8.51%, generalization 6.38%, Modulation 5.85%, particularization 5.85%, amplification 5.32%, transposition 2.66%, reduction 2.13%, inversion 2.13%, pure borrowing plus established equivalent 2.13%, description 1.60%, literal 1.60%, omission 1.60%, adaptation, pure borrowing, and omission 1.06%, amplification and pure borrowing 1.06%, natural and pure borrowing 1.06%, discursive creation, generalization and transposition, literal and generalization, pure borrowing and generalization, pure borrowing and transposition, generalization and omission, adaptation, pure borrowing and transposition each of them 0.53%.
