As the first female president in Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen’s actions and words are crucial to the advancement of gender equality within the Chinese patriarchal society. Likewise, the media also have a role in shaping gender discourse which may or may not support the president’s attempt at empowering women in politics and other sectors of life. This paper examined the linguistic strategy used by President Tsai to represent herself as a strong female leader through her official statements and how the media represented her in their reports. The data were collected from local news reports and international news portals, and from her speeches as quoted by the media, starting from the year she was elected in 2016 to 2018. Using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, it was apparent that President Tsai struggled with her role as a female leader in politics, with critics from persisting patriarchal society and pressure from emerging new values in Taiwan. The media, on the other hand, was divided in making representations for and against Tsai. The conclusion of this research is hoped to give a general description of gender and political dynamics under the new era of Tsai Ing-wen.

The practice of teaching English as global language that has been widely spread in Indonesia does not fit to promote Indonesian local culture. Most of English language teaching practice pays much attention to students’ understanding relates to their local culture, but the whole process of English Language Teaching (ELT) itself denotes that students do not really apply their local culture in the English language learning. The effort of integrating local culture in ELT is still far from the concept of particularity, practicality, and of possibility. This article provides a conceptual perspective on the role of English as Lingua Franca (ELF) – Informed Approach in ELT in terms of preserving students’ cultural identity. It starts with describing the important issues dealing with the topic, evaluate the previous studies, building argument, and drawing conclusion and recommendation. The article concludes that the approach needs to be more informed in the whole process of ELT in terms of learning English and preserving students’ local culture in which students are allowed to use English within their local culture rather than only in understanding their culture without practicing.

Interaction takes crucial part in English language teaching and learning. It could determine the successfulness of teaching and learning in the classroom. Relying on the fact, interaction becomes the main means for teacher and students to exchange their ideas, feelings, opinions, insights, and etc. Especially for the teachers themselves, maintaining interaction with students is considered to be very important thing. In this case, teachers need to employ some proper strategies and approaches in order to deal with such kind of activity. Nowadays, a great number of teachers apply student-centered approach more than teacher-centered one in the way they teach English. Student-centered approach is believed to be able to encourage the teachers to raise their awareness to interact more with the students by implementing Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). In this library-based research paper, the writers would like to elevate the importance of classroom interaction in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) as an important means for teachers in their respective classrooms.
