Abstract. Although the development of research competency is an important goal of higher education in social sciences, instruments to measure this outcome often depend on the students’ self-ratings. To provide empirical evidence for the utility of a newly developed instrument for the objective measurement of social-scientific research competency, two validation studies across two independent samples were conducted. Study 1 ( n = 675) provided evidence for unidimensionality, expected differences in test scores between differently advanced groups of students as well as incremental validities over and above self-perceived research self-efficacy. In Study 2 ( n = 82) it was demonstrated that the competency measured indeed is social-scientific and relations to facets of fluid and crystallized intelligence were analyzed. Overall, the results indicate that the test scores reflected a trainable, social-scientific, knowledge-related construct relevant to research performance. These are promising results for the application of the instrument in the evaluation of research education courses in higher education.

In the article, the authors paid attention to the issues of identifying and detailing the motives of students of higher educational institutions for scientific research during their studies. Based on the generalization of the opinions of the authors who participated in the development of this problem, and the results of their own research, the authors of this article at the initial stage of the study analyzed and summarized the conclusions of scientists about the totality and detail of the above-mentioned motives. Further, the authors of this article justified a holistic set of interrelated motives that encourage students to engage in scientific research in addition to their current academic and other activities. In the process of studying the motives, the authors identified factors that represent a generalized grouping of motives for students' scientific research. Grouped motives, considered as motivational factors, can generally be considered as forces that encourage students to engage in the type of activity under consideration, namely: scientific research. The motivation factors that the authors reasonably propose to consider as determining the motivation of students for research activities are: the need for self-realization; reflection; social utility; professional interest; remuneration; social interaction; satisfaction from the process and the result. Each of the factors is justified and logically connected with the corresponding motives. This grouping is presented in tabular form and, as mentioned earlier, contains the rationale for the elements included in it.The identified factors and related motives can serve as a basis for the development of a survey material to assess students ' motivation for research activities.

In this chapter, we will pay the special attention to the use of information technologies in the two-level educational process (bachelor-magister), which contributes to the effective formation of scientific-research competences with the direct interconnection of science and production. The main features of forming scientific-research competences are described. The experience in students learning to develop these competences on each grade of education is shown. There are recommendations how to provide the properly quality of scientific-research competences, including using the information-communication technologies.

All scientific research requires at its initial stage as precise a formulation of the problem under investigation as is possible to the human mind. In a study of retardative factors in French economic development in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the need for clarifying the implications of the subject and of removing possible ambiguities is particularly urgent. By economic development is meant here an increasing amount of goods and services which are customarily exchanged for money. I am eliminating from consideration many of the intangibles of life, which are important and which the French may have in abundance, likejoie de vivre.

The article is devoted to the initial stage of the author’s research activities in Udmurtia, namely arranging and holding the first ethnographic expedition of the Udmurt Scientific Research Institute under the Council of Ministers of the UASSR (EE of the USRI - 1970). The expedition’s goal was to confirm (to clarify or to deny) traditional opinion of pre-revolutionary time about strong russification of the northern Udmurts in comparison to the southern groups. It turned out that this opinion is highly exaggerated since northern Udmurts had preserved a lot of original local cultural features which had been lost among other neighboring ethnic groups, whereas the Russian impact, as well as the Turkic one, happened far earlier. Special attention was paid on Besermyans - an enigmatic people dwelling among the northern Udmurts for a number of centuries but preserving the features of the southern Udmurt speech. Later observations of the Besermyan household and culture were summarized in my article; I made an assumption about their ethnogenesis. In spite of a great number of today’s scientific ideas, the Besermyans’ ethnogenesis, in my opinion, still remains hypothetic.

The article is devoted to the development of scientific and pedagogical professionals' information and research competency with the aim to promote the process of improving their work quality results, to create and use open electronic systems for support scientific, educational, theoretical and methodological and practical bases. It can provide modernization of the national education and science in according with world trends. The concept of scientific and pedagogical professionals' information and research competency is defined in, such as the ability to use ICT for search, compile, analyze and present scientific materials according with the methodology of the scientific research, communication, cooperation and training other educators, to use the services of scientific and educational systems for informational and analytical support of scientific and pedagogical researches, monitoring and evaluation scientific results, to product new socially significant knowledge with the aim to promote the implementation its to their research and education practice. The main foreign experience in implementing educational programs of informometry for the scientific and pedagogical professionals' informational and research competency development is described in the article. The open electronic educational and scientific s systems’ impact on the development of scientific and pedagogical professionals' information and research competency is determined in. It has been found out, that selection of open electronic scientific and educational systems becomes important for the development of scientific and pedagogical professionals' information and research competency. The platforms for the electronic libraries creation, open electronic conferences, services for the management of scientific bibliography, monitoring of scientific research activities of scientific and scientific and pedagogical workers, etc., are particular importance for the development of scientific and pedagogical professionals' information and research competency. The development of a methodology for the use open scientific and educational systems in accordance with the open science principles is the prospects for research on the development of scientific and pedagogical professionals' information and research competency.
