One-Million Hectares of Oil Palm Plantation Program in 2000 was deemed as the starting point of lowland conversion in East Tanjung Jabung Regency. This study aims to review the impact of development policy in the past on lowland conversion, to compare costs and incomes between those of paddy farming and oil palm plantation business, and to analyze constraints to implement the target of Sustainable Land for Food Agriculture Protection (PLP2B) Program. Primary data were collected from observation, focus group discussion, and in-depth interview with resource persons, survey and Landsat Imaginary data. Secondary data were gathered from the institutions at provincial and regency levels. This study explored both qualitative and quantitative methods as well as by overlay of maps in 2006, 2010 and 2014. Development policy inconsistency is influenced by change in regency government leadership with the new mission not well integrated with the previous programs. On the other hand, land rent of paddy farm was much less than that of oil palm plantation. There are some constraints to implement the PLP2B Program, namely weak Regional Regulations, lack of coordination among the Regional Government institutions, and limited development budget. It is suggested that the Regency Government to evaluate PLP2B Program target by considering some limiting factors, issuing the Regent’s Regulation dealing with incentives to farmers and program coordinators, and controlling the regional planning.

Purpose Lesson study (LS) research is disadvantaged by a lack of clarity surrounding the potential outcomes an LS cycle can produce for participant learning. The purpose of this paper is to set out a model of the potential outcomes an LS cycle can achieve. The model identifies the limitations that can occur in LS groups and how these limitations impact on the overall outcomes for participants. Design/methodology/approach Case studies are used to exemplify the different outcomes in the model taken from five years of LS work in a primary school in England. The case studies shape the four different outcomes of the model, defining and contextualising the attributes and characteristics of each outcome. Findings The model presented indicates that there are four key outcomes for LS cycles, with the most common outcome being a form of limited learning. The paper explores the limitations of time, collaboration and expertise to articulate how each of these limiting factors has a bearing on the overall outcome for an LS cycle. Research limitations/implications The model is currently based on a singular educational setting. This means that each outcome needs further exploration through wider LS work in order to clarify and refine the outcome model. Practical implications The outcome model will support the development of a shared vocabulary for discussing LS cycles. By articulating where on the outcome model an LS is, it is possible for researchers to discuss how to reduce the impact of limitations and other challenges to LS, enabling research to develop a more evaluation-led approach to using LS. Originality/value The outcome model supports LS researchers in articulating the outcomes of their LS cycles with a shared vocabulary. It addresses understudied areas of LS research, namely failed and dysfunctional LS cycles and identifies that while an LS can bring the potential for participant learning, the cycle outcomes are the starting point for participant change.

Abstract. Over recent decades oil palm plantations have rapidly expanded across Southeast Asia (SEA). According to the United Nations, oil palm production in SEA increased by a factor of 3 from 1995 to 2010. We investigate the impacts of current (2010) and future (2020) oil palm expansion in SEA on surface-atmosphere exchange and the resulting air quality in the region. For this purpose, we use satellite data, high-resolution land maps, and the chemical transport model GEOS-Chem. Relative to a no oil palm plantation scenario (~ 1990), overall simulated isoprene emissions in the region increase by 13 % due to oil palm plantations in 2010 and a further 11 % by 2020. In addition, the expansion of palm plantations leads to local increases in ozone deposition velocities of up to 20 %. The net result of these changes is that oil palm expansion in SEA increases surface O3 by up to 3.5 ppbv over dense urban regions, and could rise more than 4.5 ppbv above baseline levels by 2020. Biogenic secondary organic aerosol loadings also increase by up to 1 μg m−3 due to oil palm expansion, and could increase a further 2.5 μg m−3 by 2020. Our analysis indicates that while the impact of recent oil palm expansion on air quality in the region has been significant, the retrieval error and sensitivity of the current constellation of satellite measurements limit our ability to observe these impacts from space. Oil palm expansion is likely to continue to degrade air quality in the region in the coming decade and hinder efforts to achieve air quality regulations in major urban areas such as Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Our research addresses wine tourism as a means of enhancing the heritage and industrial memory of wine. Specifically, it considers winery tours as a form of industrial tourism capable of boosting the sustainable development of winemaking territories. This article explores the significance and perception of wine tourism from the perspective of the local community by examining a specific case: The Port Wine Cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal), where tourism and the wine industry are undergoing a greening process, sharing both cultural and commercial ties. The originality of this article lies in the empirical part of the research, which, using quantitative methods based on questionnaires, provides primary data regarding the relationship between sustainability and industrial wine tourism from the perspective of local residents, key agents in the promotion and success of the destination. In general terms, the results statistics obtained through a cluster analysis show that local perception of the impact of wine tourism in Gaia is favorable, and it is considered an element with the capacity to revitalize the economy and also enhance the city’s image. It is also seen as a sustainable option, attributable mainly to economic, cultural, and governance considerations.

<p>Anthropogenic activities, and in particular the use of synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizer, have a significant influence on soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from oil palm plantation on tropical peatland. Finding a suitable N rate for optimum N uptake efficiency and yield with low environmental impact and production cost is crucial for the economic growth of Malaysia&#8217;s oil palm sector. However, studies on the impact of N fertilizers on N2O emissions&#160;from&#160;tropical peatland are limited. Thus, long-term monitoring was conducted to investigate the effects of N fertilization on soil N2O emissions. This study was conducted in an oil palm (<em>Elaeis guineensis Jacq</em>.) plantation located in a tropical peatland in Sarawak, Malaysia. Monthly soil N2O fluxes were measured using the closed-chamber method in a control (T1, without N fertilization), and under three different N treatments: low N (T2, 31.1 kg N ha&#8722;1), moderate N (recommended rate) (T3, 62.2 kg N ha&#8722;1), and high N (T4, 124.3 kg N ha&#8722;1), from January 2010 to December 2013 and from January 2016 to December 2017. The only N fertiliser rate to significantly increase (p<0.05) annual cumulative N2O emissions was 124.3 kg N ha-1 (T4). Increased&#160;in water-filled pore space (WFPS) (>70%) with a decrease in both N2O flux and nitrate (NO3&#8722;) implies that complete denitrification has taken place.&#160;Increased in NO3-&#160;uptake by oil palm with an increase in WFPS decreased NO3- concentration in soil, resulting in the reduction of N2O emission. This study highlights the importance of WFPS on denitrification and <span>N uptake </span><span>by oil palm in tropical peatland. This needs to be taken into account for the accurate assessment of N dynamics in oil palm plantations on tropical peatland in order to enhance N fertilization management strategies and counteract anthropogenic activities that produce greenhouse gases.</span></p><p>Keywords: WFPS, oil palm yield, NO3-, N uptake</p>

Our research team worked with Nakanai land-holders in Papua New Guinea to perform the first survey of butterflies in the Lake Hargy caldera of West New Britain Province. Methods included modified Pollard transects quantifying sampling effort based on aerial netting and visual observations, as well as traps baited with fermenting fruit. Results were compared with surveys on the adjacent Hargy Oil Palm plantation. Our sampling yielded 312 specimens representing 73 species; of these, 50 were limited to primary rainforest, 12 to oil palm plantation and 11 species occurred at both sites. Four species are newly recorded for New Britain, including one potentially invasive species on Citrus. Singleton specimens made up the largest abundance class in the data set, representing 34% of records in primary rainforest. Sixty-two percent of the butterfly taxa recorded are regionally endemic to the Bismarck island chain or to New Britain in particular. Calculated levels of similarity between sites ranged from 0.151 to 0.262, suggesting the oil palm and rainforest habitats supported highly distinct species assemblages. Although rapid assessment data such as these are necessarily limited in scope, they can still aid in documenting the impact on biodiversity from conversion of primary tropical rainforest to oil palm monoculture.
