The use of a blog as a platform for extensive reading becomes valuable since it provides the possibility of readership and opportunity for interaction and collaboration. As the online journal facilitating users to display information in chronological order and connected to the Internet, the blog also can help students to get a wide variety of reading materials, which should be conducted in extensive reading activities. However, the use of a blog in this study is integrated with the process of learning in the classroom so that the students can use it for reporting their reading activities and share what they read beyond the classroom. This study is conducted during one semester in one of the universities in Indonesia using six students of the first grade joining an extensive reading course as the participants. In this research, a case study is used as a research method. It aims at analyzing the students' perception of the use of blogs in extensive reading. Findings show that the blog is beneficial for promoting the students' reading interest, building autonomy and creativity, and providing a reflective platform. The blog consists of several features allowing students to get the numerous reading sources that are appropriate with their language level and interest. Therefore, it becomes useful since it can facilitate students to build their responsibility to select their reading material and to reflect the progress of their learning activities.

Learners have different historical reading experiences which can be analyzed from any perspectives. This study aimed to explore “the reading experiences of two successful English study program learners of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Riau in Extensive Reading course based on Exploring Personal Reading Histories”. The suitable design in answering the research question of this study is a Case Study of the two successful learners in Extensive Reading course. Based on the result of the analysis of this study, it was found that reading experiences of English study program learners of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Riau based on Exploring Personal Reading Histories is individual contexts (the facilities provided by parents and the involvement of teachers) reflecting on the process in becoming competent in each level. As a result, their experiences develop their interest to do activities of reading without instruction. It also indicates that this study contributes to reading theory, especially extensive reading relating with the other theories as well as pedagogy in teaching and learning Extensive Reading by implementing Exploring Personal Reading Histories at the beginning of the course. This finding contributes to theory of reading, especially extensive reading and to methodology in terms of the appropriate instruments and analysis for qualitative researches.

Nowadays, the development of the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language has been transformed. Learners do not only focus on the learning of speaking and writing but also reading since they are required to be able to smartly respond to the texts they are reading. The development of the information and technology forces the focus of teaching and learning on the critical reading that might be less interesting for the students. The students may not know their interest in reading before they start reading. A unique condition in Magelang regency, a small town close to Yogyakarta, the students of senior high schools have achieved their best achievement for their learning that can be seen from the rank of the school that becomes the best school in terms of the final examination in Central Java. To know the teaching and learning of English in that school can be an alternative for other schools. Based on the case study conducted in some schools in Magelang regency, it can be found that the teaching and learning are still varied. The findings were discussed under the following terms; students’ reading activities, mastery of reading skills, reading materials, and reading modality. It is a problem for the success of language teaching as the students can have low motivation in reading if the reading materials were not interesting for them.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the English language problems and learning strategies. The study employed a survey design which involved administering questionnaires of rating scales, using Rubin, J., & Thompson, I. (1994) and Rebecca Oxford (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), to measure English language problems and language learning strategies from 10 Thai students of English Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty at Riau Islamic University. The result of this study revealed that the most serious problem of Thai students in English Language Learning is listening and writing skills while reading skill is the least problem. Another big problem involved being unable to write an essay within limited time and always have a listening problem. Beside, the problem least mentioned is unable to understand classroom lectures in English. All Participant reported a high frequency use of strategy on the SILL. The participants reported using social strategies most frequently and metacognitive strategies least frequently but in medium range. The most frequently used strategies involved asking lecture or classmate for helping. Not trying guess if they do not fully understand what is being said was the least frequently used.

Abstract:This study aims to determine the refractive index of various types of glass using the principle of refraction of light. The principle of refraction used in this study is the principle of refraction of light according to Huygens. This research was conducted within a period of 14 days at the Physics Education Laboratory, Physics Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Syiah Kuala University. The samples in this study were flint glass and corona glass. This study uses the concept of refraction of light that occurs in plan parallel glass, with looping data retrieval techniques. The data analysis used in this study is refraction law formulated by Snellius about refraction. The results showed that the Corona glass has a refractive index of 1.418 while the Flint glass has a refractive index of 1.6203, whereas according to the reference the Corona glass has a refractive index of 1.52 and Flint 1.62. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that for the Flint glass there are differences but not too significant while for the Korona glass the. Results obtained are in accordance with the reference.

Learners’ reading interest is developed based on personal reading histories; meaning that they have different reading experiences. The main purpose of this article is to present the research finding about the participant’s personal reading histories developing her reading interest. This is a Case Study by using document of Exploring Personal Reading Histories and interview for its instrument. The study found that the participant was introduced to reading through playing with words and numbers. After being able to read, she listened to stories indicating that stories are as the construction of words. The finding shows that the participant’s reading histories develop her reading interest by recognizing reading through interesting ways, media, and guidance. These The contribution of this study is the need of the implementation of Exploring Personal Reading Histories in Extensive Reading course in order to know how learners are interested in reading as well as to remind them with their meaningful reading experiences.
