A batch adsorption system was applied to study the adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solution by Iraqi bentonite and treated bentonite with different amount of zinc oxide (ZnO). The adsorption capacities of methylene blue onto bentonite were evaluated. The equilibrium between liquid and solid phase was described by Langmuir model better than the Freundlich model. Langmuir and Freundlich constants have been determined. The separation factor or equilibrium parameter, RL which is used to predict if an adsorption system is favourable or unfavourable was calculated for all cases.

Clay is a natural material from crystalline silicate with layered structures, has high cation exchange capacity, and large surface area. These advantages can be used as an adsorbent for the removal of contaminants in aqueous solutions, such as heavy metals and dyes. In Indonesia, clays from Java, Sulawesi, and Sumatra islands have been used as adsorbent, furniture, and construction materials. Due to limited information about basic characteristics of clay from Kalimantan, this clay has not been utilized well. Therefore, natural clay from Kalimantan, especially in Central Kalimantan, was used as adsorbent of cationic dyes in this present study. However, the clay has difficulty for separating the solid phase from aqueous solution after adsorption process. To solve this problem, combining clay with magnetic material was opted. The objectives of this study are to synthesize the magnetic composite material from natural clay by coprecipitation method and to characterize the synthesized magnetic composite material using an x-ray diffraction method, transmission electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The adsorption properties of the synthesized magnetic composite material were evaluated using rhodamine B and methylene blue dyes in aqueous solution. Before magnetic composite material was synthesized, the clay was previously being activated for removing impurities. The magnetic material formed in the structure of clay had magnetite with particle size of 2.75 nm and the magnetization value of 24.91emu/g. The adsorption capacities of natural clay, activated clay, and magnetic composite of clay in rhodamine B were 34.29, 76.27, and 81.46 mg/g, respectively, while in methylene blue were 30.25, 83.92, and 133.90 mg/g, respectively. These results suggested that magnetic composite of clay can increase the adsorption capacities against dyes and accelerate the separation of the adsorbent solid phase from aqueous solution with largest adsorption capacity on methylene blue dye.

Palm shell activated carbon was modified via surface impregnation with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to enhance removal of Cu2 +  from aqueous solution in this study. The effect of PEI modification on batch adsorption of Cu2 +  as well as the equilibrium behavior of adsorption of metal ions on activated carbon were investigated. PEI modification clearly increased the Cu2 +  adsorption capacities by 68% and 75.86% for initial solution pH of 3 and 5 respectively. The adsorption data of Cu2 +  on both virgin and PEI-modified AC for both initial solution pH of 3 and 5 fitted the Langmuir and Redlich–Peterson isotherms considerably better than the Freundlich isotherm.

In this study, the usage of the peppermint (Mentha piperita) for extracting the metal ions [Mg (II), Cr (II), Ni (II), Cu (II), Zn (II), Cd (II), Pb (II)] that exist at water was investigated. In order to analyze the stability properties, Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms were used at removing the metal ions and the highest correlation coefficients (R2) were obtained at Langmuir isotherm. Therefore, it is seen that the Langmuir model is more proper than the Freundlich model. However, it was found that the correlation coefficients of removing Ni and Cd is higher at Freundlich model than Langmuir and low at Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm. It is established that the biosorption amount increase depends on the increase of biosorbent and it can be achieved high efficiency (95%) even with small amount (0.6 mg, peppermint extract) at lead ions. It is also determined that the peppermint extracted that is used at this study shows high biosorption capacity for metal ions and can be used for immobilization of metals from polluted areas.

The AAc/GO nanocomposite hydrogel was successfully employed as a polymeric Nano sorbent of the removal efficiency of M G dye from the model. The complication of the mechanism of the adsorption system was completely exposed by examining how solution pH affects adsorption, Ionic strength isotherm models, kinetic models, and thermodynamics. The adsorption of the MG dye was greatly dependent on the solution pH. The Freundlich model has been demonstrated to be the most accurate in describing the MG dye sorption, whilst the Langmuir model was shown to be the least accurate. Additionally, these integrated mechanisms fit nicely within the framework of a pseudo-second-order model. Additionally, the contact time at equilibrium short (ten minutes) required to MG removes demonstrates the AAc/GO nanocomposite hydrogel can be considered an efficient and potentially useful adsorbent for MG removal from industrial effluents.

In this study, two improved versions of UiO-66 were successfully synthesised. Modified UiO-66 and UiO-66-Ce were characterised to confirm the integrity of the structure, the stability of functional groups on the surface and the thermal stability. Activated samples were used for removal harmful anionic dye (methyl orange) (MO) from wastewater. Batch adsorption process was relied to investigate the competition between those MOFs for removing MO from aqueous solution. Based on the results, at a higher initial concentration, the maximum MO uptake was achieved by UiO-66-Ce which was better than modified-UiO-66. They adsorbed 71.5 and 62.5 mg g-1 respectively. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were employed to simulate the experimental data. In addition, Pseudo first order and Pseudo second order equations were used to describe the dynamic behaviour of MO through the adsorption process. The high adsorption capacities on these adsorbents can make them promised adsorbents in industrial areas.

This work reports the feasibility of using pristine and chemically modified coral limestones by acid and base. Their potential adsorptive capabilities is probed by treatment of toxic Cr(VI), Pb(II) ions and methylene blue in aqueous solution under different experimental parameters by batch method. Parameters such as agitation time, concentration, temperature and pH were varied to understand the sorption behaviour of the adsorbents in each case. The adsorbents were characterized by SEM, XRD and FTIR. Morphological analysis by SEM micrographs show that the surface of all adsorbents was irregular in nature. XRD spectra confirmed the orthorhombic structure of aragonite in the pristine coral limestones (PCL), acid modified coral limestones (ACL) and base modified coral limestones (BCL). FTIR results affirmed the presence of (CO3 2-) and (-C=O) groups of the carbonate ions and Ca-O attachment to the surface of PCL and removal of CaCO3 characteristic peaks in ACL and BCL. However, in the modified adsorbents shifting of Ca-O peaks occurred. The recorded maximum adsorption capacities of PCL, ACL and BCL for Cr(VI) ions were 69.42, 65.04, 64.88 mg/g, Pb(II) ions 39.36, 74.11, 78.34 mg/g and methylene blue 37.24, 46.28, 46.39 mg/g, respectively. The uptake of Pb(II), Cr(VI) ions, methylene blue onto PCL fitted Freundlich model. Also the uptake of Cr(VI) ions and methylene blue onto ACL and BCL fitted Freundlich isotherm. However, uptake of Pb(II) ions onto both ACL and BCL fitted Langmuir isotherm. The data revealed that the adsorption of Pb(II) ions onto PCL and ACL and methylene blue dye onto PCL was exothermic. Whilst the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions onto PCL, ACL and BCL and methylene blue dye onto ACL and BCL were endothermic in nature, hence increasing the temperature would enhance the uptake of Pb(II) ions onto BCL, Cr(VI) ions onto ACL and BCL and methylene blue onto ACL and BCL. The obtained (ΔGº) values at all studied temperatures for the adsorption of Pb(II), Cr(VI) ions and methylene blue onto PLC, ACL and BCL indicated a spontaneous process.

Abstract In this study, an efficient route to synthesizing polyethyleneimine-modified ultrasonic-assisted acid hydrochar (PEI-USAH) is developed and reported. Ultrasonic irradiation technique was used as surface modification method to shorten the crosslinking reaction for hydrochar and polyethyleneimine (PEI). The PEI-USAH showed an excellent adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties of this PEI-modified adsorbent were comparatively characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis and CNHS analysis. The effects of contact time, initial pH, and biosorbent dose on adsorption capacities were investigated. The batch adsorption experiments showed that PEI-USAH possessed the maximum adsorption capacities of 94.38 mg/g and 330.84 mg/g for initial Cr(VI) concentration of 100 mg/L and 500 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, this adsorption process could be fitted to Langmuir adsorption and described by the pseudo second order kinetic model. Based on the above findings, PEI-USAH could be used as a potential adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater.
