Abstract:Even though efforts to uphold justice and gender equality continue to be voiced, in fact gender discrimination still exixts in society. One of the fundamental reasons for gender inequality is that the patriarchy concept is still praised who views men as the dominant party and ignores the role of women in social order. Departing from the perception that women are only prepared to be the head of the kitchen in the family, placing women as the marginalized and subverted people. Women become targets of violence and social harassment who are seen as weak and powerless.

This volume reframes the debate around Islam and women’s rights within a broader comparative literature. It examines the complex and contingent historical relationships between religion, secularism, democracy, law, and gender equality. Part I addresses the nexus of religion, law, gender, and democracy through different disciplinary perspectives (sociology, anthropology, political science, law). Part II localizes the implementation of this nexus between law, gender, and democracy, and provides contextualized responses to questions raised in Part I. The contributors explore the situation of Muslim women’s rights vis-à-vis human rights to shed light on gender politics in the modernization of the nation and to ponder over the role of Islam in gender inequality across different Muslim countries.

Islamic law and women are one of mostly debated discourses bycontemporary Islamic thinkers particularly those who are gender issuesproponents. That discourse grows due to the accuse towards Islam thatthis religion is the source of gender inequality for women through outmuslim world especially in education, fairness and domestic freedom aswell as social welfare in the family. The assumption is that Islamic law ismale-based law. Therefore, it is a need to explore the note on Islamic lawdevelopment which is perceived from the role of women in the early age oflaw construction not from the aspect of the thought of classical ulama inthe middle age. This paper tries to explore and to discuss mainly the role ofSiti Aisyah as the teacher and the transmitter of hadith as the foundation ofIslamic law construction to underline women’s position and contributionas the law maker that it will prove that Islamic law is not merely men-basedlaw as the assumption grows.

In the last few decades, women in Sri Lanka still face social inequality. This paper highlights that patriarchy as a socio-cultural factor is very dominant in gender discrimination in the country. Among them is the role of religion which has created the root of male tendency to dominance. As a result, women become a marginalized group, including in politics and work. This disparity has in fact been rooted from the family level, where the role of women in various matters in this small scope is very limited.

Radicalism is a process initiated from the ideas and teachings that stem from individual stages. Hence, the early detection effort in deradicalization by involving women can run effectively, regarding the fact that women play a vital role in the family, particularly in shaping the character of children. Unfortunately, the role of women in preventing, or actually in promoting and participating, terrorism and political violence seems to be neglected. This qualitative study attempts to examine the role of women in preventing radicalization and at the same time promoting and participat-ing to alleviate terrorism and political violence. The findings of the study reveal that the role of women in the deradicali-zation can be done in a number of strategies, although not restricted, such as reduction of gender inequality and disparity, giving women a greater role to participate in a multi-field of social realm, strengthening the well-being to prevent radicalization, making women as leaders who hold moderate and tolerant values in education, especially within, though not limited, the family environment, and initiating peace through women’s reproductive functions.

Islam is a religion which has attempted to elevate the status of women so that there should be no discrimination between women and men from the Islamic perspective. However, in some fiqh texts, which are based on selected Qur'an and hadith, there is discrimination against women. On the other side, gender discourse now becomes an important issue and is used to improve the status of women. This article attempts to explore both the jiqh texts and gender discourse on the models of leadership in a family, especially on the role of women and men in the family and on the sexual relations, from the Islamic perspective.

This article focuses on the role of Dr B. R. Ambedkar in the empowerment of women through mobilization of the womenfolk against the subjugation meted out to them by the caste and gender hierarchy in order to maintain the existing caste structures. Ambedkar realized the need for women to become the torchbearers of the new reformed society which is both casteless and classless in nature. He therefore advocated a companionate relationship between men and women as opposed to the master–slave relationship that Manu propagated in Manusmriti. In order to achieve such a feat, the need of the hour was to free women from the bounds imposed upon them by the existing Brahmanical social order which treated them as subservient to men and wholly dependent on their male counterparts. Manu’s idea of a woman was of a subhuman being in need of stringent control by her male relations. This article seeks to answer the question—why it was imperative to control women thus? Women, owing to their reproductive potential, have the ability to dismantle the caste purity by reproducing outside of their castes. Hence, their ideological suppression becomes essential to the enterprise of maintaining caste purity. For this purpose, several ritualistic tools had to be put in place to extinguish the threat of women’s sexuality.

Indian society is quite a complex one, because of its construction of hierarchal social order grounded on the premise of sophistication, stratum and sex. Historically, women are placed at the margins that prevented them from having opportunities and denied them the flexibility to enter the general public sphere. This paper entitled “Tussle for Existence: An Inquisitive Exploration on the Role of Women in Sangati (Events)” which is a close to the accurate attempt to discern the penetrating expertise of lower-class women who passed through many unconditional subjugations from varied norms of the society, as well as Dalit women’s power of resilience to subdue these existing curtailments in the patriarchal social structure. Through the work, Sangati, Bama explores the lives of women, wherever caste and gender-based rights and rituals executed women’s life as sacrificial fire. In her work Sangati, Bama, one among the predominant Dalit women writers, constitutes the themes of Dalit feminism and the celebrations of self-assurance within the community of subaltern women.
