Abstract Abstract Background: Despite the fact that effective clinical teaching realistically enhances learners to be competent, in Ethiopia only 31.6% of midwifery graduates passed the national standard of competence for graduation in 2013. Likewise, evidence is lacking on effective clinical teaching practice of midwifery educators in Ethiopia. As a result, this study aimed to assess effective clinical teaching practice and associated factors among midwifery educators in Public Universities of Ethiopia. Methods: Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among midwifery educators in Ethiopia in April, 2019. A total of 424 educators were randomly selected to participate in this study. Data were collected through email then entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and transported to SPSS version 23 for analysis. The data presented using frequency, percentage and tables. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to identify associated factors of effective clinical teaching practice. The odds ratio at 95% confidence interval used to ascertain association. Statistical significance declared at P<0.05. Results: Only 178(47.3%) of participants had effective clinical teaching practice. Clinical teaching experience (AOR= 4.72; 95%CI=1.97, 11.29), training on higher diploma in teaching profession (AOR=2.78; 95%CI=1.61, 4.82), clinical teaching workshop (AOR=4; 95%CI=1.98, 8.05), students per clinical unit (AOR= 3.71; 95%CI= 1.66, 8.26), giving objectives of clinical learning for students (AOR= 4.74; 95%CI=2.43, 9.25), using performance based assessment tool (AOR =1.82; 95%CI=1.04, 3.16) and having good interest in clinical teaching (AOR=8.63; 95%CI=2.91, 25.56) were factors positively associated with effective clinical teaching practice. Conclusions: Less than half of midwifery educators of Ethiopian Public Universities had effective clinical teaching practice. The educators’ clinical teaching experience, training and adhering to clinical teaching standards were identified to affect effective clinical teaching positively. Therefore, the educators should adhere to the standards for effective clinical teaching and receive trainings on effective teaching. Background In Ethiopia, nearly one-third of people living with human immunodeficiency viruses do not adhere to antiretroviral therapy. Moreover, information regarding non-adherence and its associated factors among adults on first-line antiretroviral therapy in Northeast Ethiopia is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of non-adherence and its associated factors among adults on first-line antiretroviral therapy in North Shewa Zone, Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia. Methods A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 326 participants selected by systematic random sampling technique from the five randomly selected public health facilities. Data were collected using the questionnaire adapted from the studies conducted previously and the collected data were entered into Epi data version 3.1 and exported to Stata version 14 for further analysis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done and an adjusted odds ratio with its corresponding 95% confidence interval was used to declare a statistical significance. Results The overall prevalence of non-adherence was 17.4% [95% CI: (12.8%, 21.2%)]. Patients with no formal education [AOR (95% CI) = 5.57 (1.97, 15.88)], those who did not use memory aids to take their medications [AOR (95% CI) = 3.01 (1.27, 7.11)], travel more than 10 kilometers to visit the nearby antiretroviral therapy clinics [AOR (95% CI) = 2.42 (1.22, 25.86)], those who used substance [AOR (95% CI) = 3.57 (1.86, 28.69)], and patients whose medication time interfered with their daily routine activities [AOR (95% CI) = 15.46 (4.41, 54.28) had higher odds of having non-adherence to first-line antiretroviral therapy compared to their counter groups. Conclusion The level of non-adherence to first-line antiretroviral therapy was 17.4%, higher compared to WHO’s recommendation. Hence, patients counseling focused on avoiding substance use, use memory aids, and adjusting working time with medication schedule are very crucial. Furthermore, the ministry of health and the regional health bureau with other stakeholders should expand antiretroviral therapy service delivery at health facilities that are close to the community to address distance barriers.

Abstract Background Violence against women remains devastatingly pervasive and remained unchanged over the past decade. Violence against women is preventable and help-seeking of women subjected to violence is an entry point. So, this study assessed help-seeking behaviour and associated factors among women who experienced physical and sexual violence in Ethiopia. Method Using the 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys (EDHS), this paper analyzes the determinants of help-seeking behavior of women subjected to violence in Ethiopia. EDHS used a two-stage stratified cluster sampling technique. From 642 communities, a total of 1540 (weighted) reproductive age women were included in the analysis. Simple descriptive, bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis were employed. Statistical significance was set at a p-value of less than 0.05. Results Only 22.5% of the women who experienced violence sought help. Being aged 30 and above, working in sales, or an agricultural job, being in the richest wealth quintile, and experiencing severe violence were associated with increased help-seeking behaviour. Living in a rural area, having a husband who attended primary, secondary, and higher education, having a husband working in a professional job and agriculture were factors associated with lower odds of help-seeking behaviour. Conclusion In Ethiopia below one-fourth of women who were subject to violence sought help. Socio-demographic factors and severity of the violence were associated with help-seeking. Preventing child marriages and reducing poverty as well as increased employment and education for women enhance help-seeking behaviour by the women. Interventions could include creating awareness, law enforcement, and support for victims.

It is stated that one of the most important stages in the training of a teacher is that teacher candidates gain practical teaching experience in schools (Ünlüönen & Boylu, 2007). Together with the lecturers in the faculty, the people who will contribute to the training of the teacher candidate and guide the teacher candidate in the school dimension of the process, namely the application part, are the practice teachers. MoNE defines the practice teacher as "the teacher who has a teaching formation in the practice school, selected from among the experienced teachers, guides and counsels the teacher candidate in gaining the behaviors required by the teaching profession". Practice teachers should be open to collaboration, willing to introduce teaching-learning processes, and sharing (Coşkun & Yalın Uçar, 2012). Since the application students gained their first professional experience under the guidance of the practice within the scope of the Teaching Practice course, the practice teacher should understand the importance of this process and know his responsibility. Teacher candidates find the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired at the end of their 4-year undergraduate education in a real environment for the first time. Based on these points, the aim of this study is to evaluate the opinions of preschool student teachers studying at the same university and practice teachers about their practices in preschool education institutions within the scope of the "Teaching Practice I-II" course. This research was carried out to determine the opinions of 10 pre-school teachers working in 5 state kindergartens randomly selected from Küçükçekmece, Bakırköy and Ataköy districts of Istanbul province and 10 preschool stundent teachers studying at a foundation university in Istanbul on Teaching Practice I-II courses. Within the scope of the research, two data collection tools, "Teacher Interview Form" and "Student Interview Form", were used. The teachers and student teachers were determined by using the "snowball sampling" method. In the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 20 people, including 10 preschool student teachers and 10 practice teachers. While the student teachers found the education they received at the university as theoretical and they could not implement activities that might interest children in the classroom, the practice teachers stated that the presence of teacher candidates in their classrooms provided an advantage especially in terms of supporting them in art activities, but they did not find their classroom management dominance sufficient. While the student teachers found their communication with them good, they stated that the student teachers should improve themselves in the activity implementation processes.

Background Globally, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. In developing countries, it accounts for more than 30% of all maternal deaths. So, understanding its burden in the health care setting is significant. Thus, this study aimed to assess the magnitude of PPH and its associated factors among women who gave birth at Yirgalem General Hospital, Sidama Region, Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from March 12 to 26, 2020 among randomly selected 298 women. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered, structured, and pretested questionnaire. EpiData version 3.1 and SPSS version 20 were used to enter and analyze the data, respectively. Descriptive statistics, bivariable, and multivariable logistic regression analysis were done. Adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to measure the presence and strength of association between the independent and the outcome variables. A P-value ≤.05 was considered to declare statistical significance. Result The magnitude of PPH was 9.4% [95% CI: 6.0, 12.8]. Prolonged labor (≥24 h) [AOR = 3.4, 95% CI: 1.1, 9.9], giving birth by cesarean section [AOR = 5.8, 95% CI: 1.1, 22.0], and instrumental vaginal delivery [AOR = 3.7, 95% CI: 1.1, 12.7], and having a history of the uterine atony [AOR = 4.8, 95% CI: 1.4, 16.6] during their last delivery were factors significantly associated with PPH. Conclusion The magnitude of PPH was high. Healthcare professionals should manage the progress of labor and take all necessary measures at right time. Also, giving attention to the safety of delivery-related procedures and early related potential risks is crucial.

Background. Undernutrition including stunting particularly at an adolescent stage was not emphasized by various intervention strategies in the Ethiopian context. Assessing the magnitude and potential risk factors of undernutrition is thus helpful for policymakers to design appropriate intervention strategies. Hence, this study was aimed at assessing the magnitude of stunting and associated factors among adolescent students in Legehida district, Northeast Ethiopia. Methods. A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 424 adolescent students from February 15th to March 15th, 2018. A stratified sampling followed by a simple random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. A pretested, structured, and self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the required data. Height was measured by using a portable stadiometer and the height-for-age (HFA) z-score was calculated as an indicator of stunting. SPSS version 25 and WHO AnthroPlus software were applied to analyze the data. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with adolescent stunting. Statistical significance was determined at a p value of <0.05 and association was described by using an odds ratio at a 95% confidence interval. Results. A total of 406 adolescent students (with a response rate of 95.7%) participated in the study. The magnitude of stunting among adolescent students in this study was 24.9% (95% CI: 24.6%–35.3%). Conclusions. Stunting among adolescent students was significantly associated with being male [AOR = 2.1; 95% CI: 1.73–5.90], meal frequency (<3/day) [AOR = 4.6; 95% CI: 2.61–8.24], infrequent handwashing practice [AOR = 3.6; 95% CI: 1.30–9.40], absence of latrine facility (AOR = 5.51; 95% CI: 3.03–9.9), and consumption of unsafe water [AOR = 2.8; 95% CI: 1.35–6.19]. Hence, conducting routine nutrition screenings and assessments, promotion of proper food intake, and emphasis on nutrition education and counseling are needed to be strengthened.
