Abstract Objective The objectives of this research were to screen anti-quorum sensing activity of phyllosphere bacteria and quantify their antibiofilm activity against biofilm forming bacteria ( Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella typhimurium, Vibrio cholerae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Results We found 11 phyllosphere bacteria isolates with potential anti-quorum sensing activity. Most of the crude extracts from phyllosphere bacteria isolates had anti-quorum sensing activity against Chromobacterium violaceum at certain concentration (20 and 10 mg/mL), but not crude extract from isolate JB 7F. Crude extracts showed various antibiofilm activities against all tested pathogenic bacteria.

Most of the crude extracts from phyllosphere bacteria isolates had anti-quorum sensing activity against Chromobacterium violaceum at certain concentration (20 and 10 mg/mL), but not crude extract from isolate JB 7F. Crude extract showed the largest turbid zone (1,27 cm) using isolate JB 14B with concentration of 10 mg/mL and the narrowest turbid zone isolate (1 cm) using JB 18B with concentration of 10 mg/mL. Crude extracts showed various antibiofilm activities against all tested pathogenic bacteria, it showed the highest biofilm inhibition (90%) and destruction activities (76%) against S. aureus.

Abstract Objectives: The purpose of the study is to screen antiquorum sensing activity compound from actinobacteria using Chromobacterium violaceum as indicator and quantify the antibiofilm activity against several biofilm-forming pathogenic bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Bacillus cereus ATCC 14579, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 33186, Vibrio cholerae , Salmonella typhimurium , Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853.Results: Crude extracts from marine actinobacteria isolated from Indonesia were promising for treating biofilm-related diseases. Out of 40 isolates 10 were found to have great quorum quenching activity against C. violaceum. Moreover, these isolates were able to inhibit biofim formation by Gram positive and Gram negative pathogenic bacteria. Quorum quenching agents in extracts of 1AC, 14PM, 16PM, 18PM, and CW17 isolates were predicted as proteins or enzymes.

Bioprospecting in unusual marine environments provides an innovative approach to search novel biomolecules with antibiofilm activity. Antarctic sponge-associated bacteria belonging to Colwellia, Pseudoalteromonas, Shewanella and Winogradskyella genera were evaluated for their ability to contrast the biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, as model organisms. All strains were able to produce biofilm at both 4 and 25 °C, with the highest production being for Colwellia, Shewanella and Winogradskyella strains at 4 °C after 24 h. Antibiofilm activity of cell-free supernatants (CFSs) differed among strains and on the basis of their incubation temperature (CFSs4°C and CFSs25°C). The major activity was observed by CFSs4°C against S. aureus and CFSs25°C against P. aeruginosa, without demonstrating a bactericidal effect on their growth. Furthermore, the antibiofilm activity of crude extracts from Colwellia sp. GW185, Shewanella sp. CAL606, and Winogradskyella sp. CAL396 was also evaluated and visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopic images. Results based on the surface-coating assay and surface tension measurements suggest that CFSs and the crude extracts may act as biosurfactants inhibiting the first adhesion of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. The CFSs and the novel biopolymers may be useful in applicative perspectives for pharmaceutical and environmental purposes.

The antibacterial activities of the crude extract of Vismia baccifera var. dealbata Triana & Planch and of compounds isolated from it (sesamin, friedelin and vismiaquinone) were evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25992), Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 23357), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) using the disc diffusion agar method. The results obtained have revealed antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. faecalis and P. aeruginosa, pathogen opportunists that become resistant to the antibiotics frequently used. According to the literature consulted, this is the first report of the antibacterial activity of the crude extract of V. baccifera and its constituents.

ABSTRACT: The present study was lead with a view to evaluate the antibacterial potentials of aqueous extracts of Artemisia species against human pathogenic bacteria: Escherichia coli (E.coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Ps. aeruginosa) , Staphylococcus aureus (Staph. aureus) and Enterococcus faecalis (Entero. faecalis) by two methods, first method was minimum inhibitory concentration (abbreviation: MIC) and sound method was minimum bactericidal concentration (abbreviation: MBC). Three crude plants extracts namely Artemisia monosperma, Artemisia cina and Artemisia argyi were found to show potential antibacterial properties against the isolated human pathogenic bacterial isolates. The results of MIC and MBC values of Artemisia monosperma for Enterococcus faecalis strains were at least concentration almost 2.3 and 4.1 mg/ml respectively, while MIC and MBC of Artemisia cina for Escherichia coli were highest concentration 3.9 and 4.9 mg/ml respectively. Moreover, MIC and MBC values for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis strains was correspondent with MIC and MBC values of Escherichia coli for aqueous extracts of Artemisia species meanwhile it is Artemisia cina which showed maximum activity against Escherichia coli. Among the Artemisia species tested, Artemisia cina showed the most promising result. Form these results prove the antibacterial potential of the plants and hence provide support for the use of them in traditional medicine.

The current upsurge in resistance to conventional antibiotics, as well as high cost of orthodox medical treatment, called for the use of medicinal plants as an alternative therapy. This research was aimed at determining the antibacterial activity of Artocarpus heterophyllus seed extracts (Jackfruit as it is locally called) in the treatment of diarrhoea. Ethanolic and hexanolic seed crude extracts of the plant were screened for antidiarrhoeal activity against bacteria isolated from clinical samples (methicillin-resistant and susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, ciprofloxacin-resistant Salmonella typhimurium, and third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli). Plant phytochemical screening was conducted using standard methods. The antibacterial activity was carried out using the agar well diffusion method and compared to the standard antibiotics ceftriaxone and vancomycin. The minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by the microbroth dilution method, whereas the minimum bactericidal concentration was determined by plating out from microtitre plates with no visible growth. The results of phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, reducing sugars, cardiac glycosides, saponins, and steroids from the prepared crude extracts. The ethanolic and hexanolic extracts had activity on multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus with the mean and standard error zone of inhibition that ranged from 8.5 ± 0.5 to 16.5 ± 0.25 mm; however, the extracts were found not to have activity on resistant E. coli and Salmonella typhimurium. The ethanolic crude extract had the lowest MIC and MBC values of 31.25 and 125 mg/ml, respectively, compared to the hexane extract which had the MIC and MBC values of 62.50 and 250 mg/ml, respectively. This provides the evidence for its usage as an alternative herbal remedy for the treatment of diarrhoea caused by susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and multidrug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Effect of ethanolic extract of Clove (Eugenia caryophyllus) examined against (4) species of pathogenic bacteria ('Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium) using: diffusion method, determination the minimum inhibitory concentration MIC, and minimum bactericidal concentration MBC. The results showed that Clove extract appeared high inhibitory effect on the growth of' 'Staphylococcus aureus & Pseudomonas aeruginosa, this inhibition increased with increasing the concentration. The MIC values were, 2.0, 4.0 mg/ml respectively, on the other hand, the MBC value against 'Staphylococcus aureus was 4.0 mg/ml. while the MBC value against Pseudomonas aeruginosa dose not effective. Further Escherichia coli & Salmonella typhimurium showed resistance to the activity of Clove extract.

Objetivos: avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana em extrato aquoso, hidroalcoólico e alcoólico das folhas de espécies da família Lamiaceae frente a bactérias de interesse. Método: Foram escolhidas quatro espécies: Ocimum gratissimum, Plectranthus amboinicus, Mentha arvensis e Plectranthus barbatus. A partir das folhas foram confeccionados os extratos aquoso, hidroalcoólico e alcoólico nas concentrações 100mg/mL, 50mg/mL e 25mg/mL. Foram selecionadas as bactérias Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus e Pseudomonas aeruginosa para os ensaios de antibiose em Ágar Mueller-Hinton. Resultados: P. barbatus, em seu extrato hidroalcoólico mostrou ativo nas três concentrações para bactéria S. aureus, e ainda foi ativo para P. aeruginosa, demonstrando no extrato alcoólico atividade frente as bactérias. Para M. arvensis e P. amboinicus, seus extratos hidroalcoólico e alcoólico apresentaram atividade para S. aureus. Conclusão: Sugere-se que as espécies em questão apresentem boa atividade antimicrobiana, sendo necessária a realização de mais estudos para melhor entender esse mecanismo.

Results We found eight phyllosphere bacteria isolates with potential quorum quenching activity to inhibit Chromobacterium violaceum as indicator bacteria. Crude extracts (20 mg/mL) showed various antibiofilm activity against fish pathogenic bacteria used in this study. Isolate JB 17B showed the highest activity to inhibit biofilm formation of A. hydrophila and V. harveyi, meanwhile isolate JB 3B showed the highest activity to inhibit biofilm of S. agalactiae. From destruction assay, isolate JB 8F showed the highest activity to disrupt biofilm of A. hydrophila isolate JB 20B showed the highest activity to disrupt biofilm of V. harveyi, isolate JB 17B also showed the highest activity to disrupt biofilm of S. agalactiae.
