Abstract Background Chinese indigenous pigs exhibit considerable phenotypic diversity, but their population structure and the genetic basis of agriculturally important traits have not been explored. Results Here, we sequenced the whole genomes of 24 individual pigs representing 22 breeds distributed throughout China. For comparison with European and commercial breeds (one pig per breed), we integrated seven published pig genomes with our new genomes. Our results showed that pig domestication occurred at three places in Southeastern Asia, namely the Mekong region, the middle to downstream regions of the Yangtze River, and Tibetan highlands. Moreover, we demonstrated that classic morphological characteristics such as coat color are not consistent with genetic data. We found that genetic material from European pigs likely introgressed into five Chinese breeds. Two new subpopulations of domestic pigs have been identified in South and North China that encompass morphology-based criteria. The Southern Chinese subpopulation comprises the classical Southern China Type and part of the Central China Type, whereas the Northern Chinese subpopulation comprises the North China Type, the Lower Yangtze River Basin Type, the Southwest Type, the Plateau Type, and the remainder of the Central China Type. Eight haplotypes and two recombination sites were identified within a conserved 40.09 Mb linkage-disequilibrium block on the X chromosome. Potential selection and domestication signatures were identified, mainly influencing body size, along with adaptations to cold and hot temperature environments. Conclusions Our findings provide insights into the phylogeny of Chinese indigenous pig breeds, and will be of enormous benefit in identifying beneficial genes to develop superior pig breeds.

Nidirana guangxiensissp. nov., a new music frog species, is proposed, based on a series of specimens collected from Mt Daming, Guangxi, southern China. The new species is close to N. yeae, N. daunchina, N. yaoica, and N. chapaensis from southwestern and south-central China and northern Indochina, while the relationships among these species remain unresolved. Nidirana guangxiensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from all known congeners by the genetic divergences in the mitochondrial 16S and COI genes, the behavior of nest construction, the advertisement call containing 6–11 rapidly repeated regular notes, and a combination of morphological characteristics. Furthermore, the Nidirana populations recorded in Guangxi are clarified in this work, providing valuable new information on the knowledge of the genus Nidirana.

Background: Ancylostomiasis is a prevalent and global parasitic disease, including China. A systematic review is significant to understand the epidemiological features of hookworm and provide guidance for prevention and treatment. Methods: We systematically searched academic databases and assessed 944 papers published from1955-2015 to establish the comprehensive analysis of prevalence of hookworm disease in China. We searched Chinese databases, including CNKI, Wanfang and VIP, for literature with the subject word "Ancylostomiasis and hookworm". The data were analyzed with SPSS 19.0 software using Spearman correlation analysis. Results were statistically significant for a P-value of <0.01. Results: The search yielded 532,151 cases from epidemiological investigation and 7294 cases based on hospital diagnosis. Hookworm infection was highest (15.83%) in Fujian province, with high rates also found in East China, Southwest China, Central China and Southern China and lower rates in Northwest China, North China and Northeast China. In terms of occupation, farmers had the highest proportion of infections (72.54%). There was no correlation between epidemiological investigations and hospital-diagnosed cases. However, there was significant positive correlation between hospital-diagnosed cases and misdiagnosed cases. The proportion of hospital-misdiagnosed cases was 32.80%. Conclusion: Ancylostomiasis is a serious public health problem that negatively influences health and hinders socioeconomic development. Positive measures are required by both health services and individuals to prevent and control hookworm disease.

China has seen large area of fog and haze weather which often lasted for a long time in different places of its central and eastern part during the year 2013. What’s more, North China, Central China, Huang-Huai area and the south part of the Yangtze River all suffered pollution to some degree. As a result, fog and haze and the serious pollution of PM2.5 became the hot topics both on the micro blog and among neighbors. Therefore, it has been a common recognition that we should strengthen the management of air pollution and reflect the economic development mode and our lifestyle. A brief analysis of the impact of fog and haze on the environment together with some control recommendations is done in this paper.

Abstract Background The adaptation of organisms to changing environments is self-evident, with the adaptive evolution of organisms to environmental changes being a fundamental problem in evolutionary biology. Bees can pollinate in various environments and climates and play important roles in maintaining the ecological balance of the earth. Results We performed an analysis of 462 Apis cerana (A. cerana) specimens from 31 populations in 11 regions and obtained 39 representative morphological features. We selected 8 A. cerana samples from each population and performed 2b-RAD simplified genome sequencing. A total of 11,506 high-quality single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci were obtained. For these SNPs, the minor allele frequency (MAF) was > 1%, the average number of unique labels for each sample was 49,055, and the average depth was 72.61x. The ratios of the unique labels of all samples were 64.27–86.33%. Conclusions Using 39 morphological characteristics as the data set, we proposed a method for the rapid classification of A. cerana. Using genomics to assess population structure and genetic diversity, we found that A. cerana has a large genetic difference at the ecotype level. A comparison of A. cerana in North China revealed that some physical obstacles, especially the overurbanization of the plains, have isolated the populations of this species. We identified several migration events in North China and Central China. By comparing the differences in the environmental changes in different regions, we found that A. cerana has strong potential for climate change and provides a theoretical basis for investigating and protecting A. cerana.

AbstractDrought is a common natural disaster that greatly affects the crop yield and water supply in China. However, the spatiotemporal characteristics of drought in China are not well understood. This paper explores the spatial and temporal distributions of droughts in China over the past 40 years using multiscale standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) values calculated by monthly precipitation and temperature data from 612 meteorological stations in China from 1980 to 2019 and combines the space-time cube (STC), Mann-Kendall (M-K) test, emerging spatiotemporal hotspot analysis, spatiotemporal clustering and local outliers for the analysis. The results were as follows: 1) the drought frequency and STC show that there is a significant difference in the spatiotemporal distribution of drought in China, with the most severe drought in Northwest China, followed by the western part of Southwest China and the northern part of North China. 2) The emerging spatiotemporal hotspot analysis of SPEI6 over the past 40 years reveals two cold spots in subregion 4, indicating that future droughts in the region will be more severe. 3) A local outlier analysis of the multiscale SPEI yields a low-low outlier in western North China, indicating relatively more severe year-round drought in this area than in other areas. The low-high outlier in central China indicates that this region was not dry in the past and that drought will become more severe in this region in the future.

AbstractAn objective front detection method is applied to ERA5, CMIP5 historical, and RCP8.5 simulations to evaluate climate model performance in simulating front frequency and understand future projections of seasonal front activities. The study area is East Asia for two natural seasons, defined as winter (December 2nd –February 14th) and spring (February 15th –May 15th), in accordance with regional circulation and precipitation patterns. Seasonal means of atmospheric circulation and thermal structures are analyzed to understand possible factors responsible for future front changes.The front location and frequency in CMIP5 historical simulations are captured reasonably. Frontal precipitation accounts for more than 30% of total precipitation over subtropical regions. Projections suggest that winter fronts will decrease over East Asia, especially over southern China. Frontal precipitation is projected to decrease for 10-30%. Front frequency increases in the South China Sea and tropical western Pacific because of more tropical moisture supply, which enhances local moisture contrasts. During spring, southern China and Taiwan will experience fewer fronts and less frontal precipitation while central China, Korea, and Japan may experience more fronts and more frontal precipitation due to moisture flux from the south that enhances 𝜽𝒘 gradients.Consensus among CMIP5 models in front frequency tendency is evaluated. The models exhibit relatively high consensus in the decreasing trend over polar and subtropical frontal zone in winter and over southern China and Taiwan in spring that may prolong the dry season. Spring front activities are crucial for water resource and risk management in the southern China and Taiwan.

Abstract “Dok Hin” is the Thai local name for Selaginella species that form rosettes. They commonly distributes in Siberia, Manchuria, southern China, Japan, the Philippines and Thailand. Morphology of Dok Hin is very resemble leading to misidentification. So, exactly number of species of Dok Hin in Thailand and their differences in morphological characteristics is not well understood. Thus, revision of morphological characters and phylogenetic confirmation of the taxonomic identification are needed. This study aims to examine morphological charateristics and phylogenetic patterns in eight populations of the Dok Hin in Northern Thailand. Morphology of Dok Hin from each populations was quantitatively examined using 15 vegetative and 6 reproductive characters meanwhile phylogenetic analyses was explored by DNA barcode ITS2. The results of the phylogenetic analysis revealed the existence of two species of Dok Hin, S. tamariscina and S. pulvinata. Selaginella tamariscina can be distinguished from S. pulvinata by its presence of a pseudotrunk above ground and ridges of dorsal leaves. On the other hand, the results of phylogenetic analysis indicated the differences among populations of S. pulvinata as well. Chiang Mai populations of S. pulvinata was characterized by peculiar set of characters long leaves and leaf apices look like caudate, while the rest of their populations have shorter leaves and leaf apices look like aristate. It indicates that S. pulvinata has genetic and phenotypic divergence among populations. However, additional studies of Dok Hin populations in other parts of Thailand and studies on different genetic markers are necessary to confirm the taxonomic status of S. pulvinata. Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) is one of the most important oilseed crops in China. It is widely cultivated in China, with winter oilseed rape in Yangtze River basin and in southern China, and spring oilseed rape in northern China. In August 2017, a survey for Leptosphaeria spp. on spring oilseed rape was conducted in Minle county, Zhangye city, Gansu Province, China. The symptoms typical of blackleg on basal stems of oilseed rape were observed in the field. A large number of black fruiting bodies (pycnidia) were present on the lesions (Fig. 1A). The disease incidence of basal stem infection in the surveyed field was 19%. A total of 19 diseased stems were collected to isolate the pathogen. After surface sterilizing (75% ethanol for 30 s, 5% NaOCl for 60 s, followed by rinsing in sterilized water three times), diseased tissues were cultured on acidified potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates at 20°C for 7 days. Twelve fungal isolates were obtained. All fungal isolates produced typical tan pigment on PDA medium, and produced pycnidia after two weeks (Fig. 1B). Colony morphological characteristics indicated that these isolates might belong to Leptosphaeria biglobosa. To confirm identification, multiple PCR was conducted using the species-specific primers LmacF, LbigF, LmacR (Liu et al. 2006). Genomic DNA of each isolate was extracted using the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) method. DNA samples of L. maculans isolate UK-1 and L. biglobosa isolate W10 (Cai et al. 2015) were used as references. Only a 444-bp DNA band was detected in all 12 isolates and W10, whereas a 333-bp DNA band was detected only in the UK-1 isolate (Fig. 1C). PCR results suggested that these 12 isolates all belong to L. biglobosa. In addition, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of these 12 isolates was analyzed for subspecies identification (Vincenot et al. 2008). Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequence showed that five isolates (Lb1134, Lb1136, Lb1138, Lb1139 and Lb1143) belonged to L. biglobosa ‘brassicae’ (Lbb) with 78% bootstrap support, and the other seven isolates (Lb1135, Lb1137, Lb1140, Lb1141, Lb1142, Lb1144 and Lb1145) belonged to L. biglobosa ‘canadensis’ (Lbc) with 95% bootstrap support (Fig. 1D). Two Lbb isolates (Lb1134 and Lb1136) and two Lbc isolates (Lb1142 and Lb1144) were randomly selected for pathogenicity testing on B. napus cultivar Zhongshuang No. 9 (Wang et al. 2002). Conidial suspensions (10 μL, 1 × 107 conidia mL-1) of these four isolates were inoculated on needle-wounded cotyledons (14-day-old seedling), with 10 cotyledons (20 wounded sites) per isolate. A further 10 wounded cotyledons were inoculated with water and served as controls. Seedlings were maintained in a growth chamber at 20°C with 100% relative humidity and a 12-h photoperiod. After 7 days, cotyledons inoculated with the four isolates showed necrotic lesions in the inoculated wounds. Control cotyledons had no symptoms (Fig. 2). Fungi re-isolated from the infected cotyledons showed similar colony morphology as the original isolates. Therefore, L. biglobosa ‘brassicae’ and L. biglobosa ‘canadensis’ appear to be the pathogens causing the observed blackleg symptoms on spring oilseed rape in Gansu, China. In previous studies, L. biglobosa ‘brassicae’ has been found in many crops in China, including oilseed rape (Liu et al. 2014; Cai et al. 2015), Chinese radish (Raphanus sativus) (Cai et al. 2014a), B. campestris ssp. chinensis var. purpurea (Cai et al. 2014b), broccoli (B. oleracea var. italica) (Luo et al. 2018), ornamental kale (B. oleracea var. acephala) (Zhou et al. 2019a), B. juncea var. multiceps (Zhou et al. 2019b), B. juncea var. tumida (Deng et al. 2020) and Chinese cabbage (B. rapa subsp. pekinensis) (Yu et al. 2021 accepted). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of L. biglobosa ‘canadensis’ causing blackleg on B. napus in China.
