Abstract Background: High prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems among Chinese adolescence has been reported. This study seeks to investigate the mediating effect of alexithymia and dependency on anxiety and emotional-behavioral problems among adolescents. The study focused a serial mediation model of alexithymia and dependency adolescents from Haikou, China. Methods: The study population included 519 adolescents. The assessments included the completion of standardized scales such as the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale (MASC), the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire (DEQ), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Independent-sample t-tests, bivariate correlation, and serial mediation analyses were performed using SPSS23.0.Results: Bivariate analyses revealed that anxiety, emotional-behavioral problem, alexithymia, and dependency were positively correlated. Alexithymia and dependency play a significant role in mediating the effect of multidimensional anxiety on emotional-behavioral problems. The effects of the three mediating paths were 69.86%,17.81% and 12.33% for paths 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Conclusions: Anxiety and emotional-behavioral problems mediate the relationship between alexithymia and dependency.

Abstract Introduction Mental health assessment in childhood needs to be carried out within a broader context that includes different factors. Objective To assess the prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems in schoolchildren and associated factors. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted with a school-based sample at 20 schools selected by systematic random sampling. Participants consisted of children aged 7-8 year old and their parents or primary caregivers. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used to screen for the presence of emotional and behavioral problems in children. Results A total of 596 dyads were evaluated. The prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems was 30.0% among boys and 28.2% among girls. Hyperactivity/inattention were more prevalent among boys (p=0.015). Belonging to economically disadvantaged strata increased the likelihood of emotional and behavioral problems among schoolchildren by 71% (p=0.001), while having parents or caregivers with mental disorder increased by 2.2 times that probability (p<0.001). Conclusion: Our findings showed a high prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems among schoolchildren, as well as the influence of economic conditions and of the mental health of parents and caregivers on child mental health.

Abstract Background. Collective violence attributed to organized crime has shown to be responsible for a considerable burden of physical and mental health morbidity among youth. Objective. To compare the emotional and behavioral problems of children exposed to early childhood poverty and/or collective violence in communities at the Mexico-United States border to children exposed to other social and health risks. Method. A cross-sectional study was carried out with individuals living in poverty at two sites at the Mexico-United States border. Individuals who responded once to the Pictorial Child Behavior Checklist (P+CBCL) in Spanish were selected randomly from clinics in a metropolitan area of El Paso, Texas, United States (poverty alone group), and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico (poverty plus collective violence group). In addition, emotional and behavioral problems present in these groups were compared with available published emotional and behavioral CBCL scales of children exposed to other social and health risks. Results. Children exposed to both poverty and collective violence had higher emotional and behavioral problem scores as measured by the P+CBCL than those exposed to poverty alone. In addition, compared with children who were brain-injured, hearing impaired, or whose parents were exposed to drugs or alcohol, the poverty and collective violence group had higher levels of emotional and behavioral problems. Discussion and Conclusion. Systematic detection and treatment of children as young as 18 months exposed to trauma are necessary to diminish the mental health problems caused by the collective violence attributed to organized crime.

Childhood is an important period of individual psychological development, and parents’ company and parenting styles are highly significant to children’s personality cultivation and mental health. With the advancement of China’s modernization and urbanization, left-behind children without their parents’ company have become a growing concern. Compared with children raised by their parents, left-behind children are more likely to show social maladaptation and mental health problems. This study explored the mediating effects of left-behind children’s dual mode of self-control between caregivers’ parenting styles and emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs). In this study, 469 left-behind children in senior classes of primary schools were investigated by adopting the caregivers’ parenting styles questionnaire of left-behind children, the dual-mode of self-control scale and the strengths and difficulties questionnaire. This study found that (1) the protective and risk factors for caregivers’ parenting styles not only directly affected EBP, but also affected it through the mediating effect of the dual-mode of self-control, and (2) the mediating effect of the impulsive system was significantly greater than that of the control system. This study confirmed that caregivers’ parenting styles had an important impact on left-behind children’s psychological growth: positive parenting styles not only directly reduced the risk of EBP, but also indirectly improved left-behind children’s mental health by promoting their level of self-control; negative parenting styles directly increased the risk of EBP and indirectly affected left-behind children’s mental problems by enhancing their level of impulsiveness. These findings provide an important basis for reducing the risk of mental health problems and cultivating good personality qualities of left-behind children.

Emotional and behavioral problems in adolescents are associated with suicidal ideation, but different dimensions of problems may be associated with different levels of suicidal ideation. The aim of this large-scale study was to explore the relationship between different dimensions of emotional and behavioral problems and suicidal ideation in Chinese adolescents and to determine whether sleep disorders play a mediating role in the relationship. In total, 20,475 students completed the questionnaire regarding emotional and behavioral problems, sleep quality and suicidal ideation. After adjustment for covariates, total emotional and behavioral difficulties (adjusted odds ratios (AOR) = 1.22, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.21–1.23) and sleep disorders (AOR = 4.17, 95% CI = 3.82–4.54) increased the risk of suicidal ideation, while prosocial problems (AOR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.90–0.93) decreased the risk of suicidal ideation. Sleep quality partially mediated the relationship between emotional and behavioral problems and suicidal ideation. The standardized indirect effects of emotional and behavioral difficulties on suicidal ideation (standardized β estimate = 0.031, 95% CI = 0.020, 0.044) and the effects of prosocial problems on suicidal ideation (standardized β estimate = −0.039, 95% CI = −0.045, −0.035) mediated by sleep quality were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Our study indicates that emotional and behavioral problems increase the risk of suicidal ideation. Additionally, sleep quality plays a mediating role in the association between emotional and behavioral problems and suicidal ideation.

Purpose This paper aims to uncover the impact of leader’s personality traits, agreeableness conscientiousness and neuroticism, on employee’s constructive voice behavior via proposed sequential mediating impact of the empowering leadership and leader–member exchange (LMX). Design/methodology/approach The proposed model was examined by using the data collected from 262 service executives based in an Indian private sector, using the partial least square structural equation modeling method. This study uses SPSS Process macro (serial mediation model) to analyze the data collected. Findings Results of the study indicated the positive association of agreeableness and conscientiousness with empowering leadership, while neuroticism was found to be negatively related. The results also provided support for the mediating effect of the LMX between empowering leadership and constructive voice behavior. Further, the authors theorized and verified the sequential mediation model proposing the indirect effect between leader’s personality traits and constructive voice. Research limitations/ implications Self-reported measures were used for data collection which suffers from the limitation of socially biased responses. Lack of large sample size inhibits us from drawing widely accepted generalization. Practical implications The authors suggest that consideration of the personality traits might assist and help organizations in choosing empowering leaders. This assumes importance as notable indirect impact of empowering leadership on constructive voice (promotive voice and prohibitive voice) has been observed. The findings also suggest the nurturing quality that LMX plays an important role in facilitating constructive voice. Originality/value This study is first of its kind in understanding the mediating mechanism between empowering leadership and constructive voice. This study further explored serial mediation (i.e. empowering leadership and LMX together) between leader’s personality and constructive voice.

Pagrindiniai žodžiai: paaugliai, emociniai ir elgesio sunkumai, YSR.THE COHERENCE OF ADOLESCENT’S EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS AND CHANGES OVER THREE YEARS: AGE AND GENDER DIFFERENCESOksana Malinauskienė, Rita ŽukauskienėSummaryAdolescent emotional and behavioral problems probably eventuate through a variety of developmental pathways and exposure to several risk factors. Several salient influences and concomitants associated with an increased risk of adolescent emotional and behavioral problems have been previously documented, including being female or male, low parental support, and substance use. The research focuses on adolescence as an important developmental period for understanding its emotional and behavioral problems and their correlations. To date, there have been few longitudinal studies on the possible structural relationships among emotional and behavioral problems in adolescent samples. The purpose of the present study was to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the longitudinal relationships among these factors and to demonstrate how they differ by sex. This study expands upon previous studies and upon the current body of literature by utilizing a longitudinal design and considering the stability and change of emotional and behavioral problems during adolescence. The longitudinal analyses contribute through clarifying ambiguities in previous findings about concurrent relations and longitudinal trends of emotional and behavioral problems. Finally, this investigation focused on a community sample, to enable a better generalization of the results to other community samples of troubled youth.Using a longitudinal sample, this study aims to analyze (1) how emotional and behavioral problems are associated with each other in adolescence, in different age groups, (2) how emotional and behavioral problems change over a three-year period, and (3) how these developmental tendencies are related to child’s gender. The sample consisted of 317 adolescents: 174 girls (55%) and 143 boys (45%). Emotional and behavioral problems were assessed at ages 14, 15 and 16 by the Youth Self Report (YSR) completed by the children. The study found that emotional and behavioral problems are associated: in all age groups, a coherence among anxiety / depression, somatic complaints, withdrawal, aggression and delinquency was apparent. Evidence suggests that emotional and behavioral problems, except withdrawal and delinquency, are relatively stable, however, the intensity of problems changes over time. Gender differences were apparent: in all age groups, girls scored higher than boys on anxiety / depression and somatic complaints, while boys scored higher than girls on the delinquency scale. The interactions between gender*age for anxiety / depression, somatic complaints, withdrawal, aggression and delinquency were not significant, implying that for both boys and girls these problems over a three-year period remained on the same level.Key words: adolescence, emotional and behavioral problem, 45R.

The present study examined the effects of emotional and behavioral problems on parenting stress among mothers of children with autism in Mongolia. The hypothesis is that if children with autism presented more problems on their emotional and behavioral aspects, the higher parenting stress perceived among the mother of children with autism. The convenience sample of the study was composed of 62 mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder. The present study used the Parenting Stress Index-Short form (PSI/SF) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), which are translated into Mongolian language by research team. Using the current sample of mothers of children with autism, Cronbach`s alpha coefficients of PSI/SF-M was 0.94 and SDQ-M was 0.62 for our sample. Bivariate correlation between the variables measuring difficulties of child and parenting stress revealed the existence of small to moderate correlations between SDQ subscales and PSI/SF subscales. PSI/SF total score and SDQ total score are correlated significantly at 0.35 (p=0.01). Difficult child subscale is correlated mild to moderate with SDQ total score (0.53), emotional symptoms (0.37), hyperactivity/inattention (0.35) and conduct problem (0.50) in positive way. Strong correlations were found between subscales of PSI/SF (0.67-0.89). The result of multiple regression analysis indicated that in addition with emotional and behavioral problems of children, income sufficiency of household and social support variables is significantly associated with parenting stress of mothers.
