Abstract The effect of fiscal deficit on inflation and growth, has been a highly contested issue in economics. Studies on the issue generally have sought to ascertain whether deficit in the fiscal balance has positive or negative effect on inflation and/or growth, neglecting the question of mediating variables in the process. In this study, we consider the consequences of selected mediating variables, money growth and general public consumption, in the context of the relationship among fiscal deficit, inflation and growth in the case of the West African Monetary Zone. The study is based on Multilevel Structural Model (1, 1, 1) within the framework of dynamic structural equation model. We found that when the relationship between inflation and fiscal deficit is mediated by growth of money, it does not show any statistical credibility, thus, member-countries are not prone to finance deficits by expanding growth of money. On the other hand, general public consumption is a statistically credible mediator between fiscal deficit and growth, but its effect is negative on growth. This implies that increased general public consumption occasioned by increased fiscal deficit is counter-productive to growth outcomes in the sub-region.

In this study, the relationship between trains of African easterly waves (AEWs) and downstream tropical cyclogenesis is studied. Based on 19 summer seasons (July–September from 1990 to 2008) of ERA-Interim reanalysis fields and brightness temperature from the Cloud User Archive, the signature of AEW troughs and embedded convection are tracked from the West African coast to the central Atlantic. The tracked systems are separated into four groups: (i) systems originating from the north zone of the midtropospheric African easterly jet (AEJ), (ii) those coming from the south part of AEJ, (iii) systems that are associated with a downstream trough located around 2000 km westward (termed DUO systems), and (iv) those that are not associated with such a close downstream trough (termed SOLO systems). By monitoring the embedded 700-hPa-filtered relative vorticity and 850-hPa wind convergence anomaly associated with these families along their trajectories, it is shown that the DUO generally have stronger dynamical structure and statistically have a longer lifetime than the SOLO ones. It is suggested that the differences between them may be due to the presence of the previous intense downstream trough in DUO cases, enhancing the low-level convergence behind them. Moreover, a study of the relationship between system trajectories and tropical depressions occurring between the West African coast and 40°W showed that 90% of tropical depressions are identifiable from the West African coast in tracked systems, mostly in the DUO cases originating from the south zone of the AEJ.

Smeathman dies in London from a ‘putrid fever’ in July 1786. The Committee for the Black Poor sully his posthumous reputation, possibly because of his support for a mixed-race constitution in Sierra Leone. They fail to see that Smeathman’s scheme for commercial agriculture, powered by the labour of redeemed slaves, presented a small step forward in recasting the relationship between forced labour and empire. Smeathman’s essay on the West African termite has many afterlives, especially in terms of its engravings, but the big book on Africa and the West Indies—his ‘Voyages and Travels’—is never published.

The current study was to examine the mediating role of Spiritual Intelligence (SQ) in engaging employees at the workplace. Particularly, this study aimed to at investigating the SQ in the relationship between practices and business performance among the food handlers. The main objective of this research is to examine the mediating effect of the SQ on the business performance (food, services, and atmosphere). Four main SQ dimensions from the ISIS measurement scale were used as a basis to collect the data. A total of 816 data was collected from the food handlers from different government’s off-premises. Analyzed with the Smart PLS, the analysis showed that SQ mediated the relationship between practices and business performance in these three areas. In assessing the structural model estimate, the results of analysis revealed that the direct effect is statistically difference from zero (β_c≠0). Thus, rejected the null hypothesis β_c=0 with a statistically significance showed that there is a mediating effect on the relationship between practices and business performance. The discussion is made in explanation of these results within the context of other researches and suggestions for further research.

The fundamental reasoning underlying this paper is that, in seeking to advance our understanding of the material basis of political power in pre-colonial African polities, particular attention must be paid to the detailed reconstruction over time of the triumviral relationship between office, land and subjects. Acknowledgement is freely made of the fact that, for many (if not most) areas of Africa, this type of reconstruction is either exceptionally difficult or frankly impossible. This paper is concerned with the West African forest kingdom of Asante (Ghana) – a case evincing considerable institutional continuity and structural vigour, and one, moreover, sufficiently richly documented to permit the type and level of reconstruction posited. Specifically, and taking into account the substantial body of research already carried out on the general political history of Asante, this paper deals with patterns of authority over land and subjects as evidenced by the offices contained within the Manwere – one of the ten administrative/military fekuo of Kumase. The Manwere was created by Asantehene Kwaku Dua Panin (1834–67), and in seeking to account for the political imperatives underlying the foundation, the paper explores the context of the reign and the biography and career of the first Manwerehene, Kwasi Brantuo. Particular attention is paid throughout to the way in which the relationship between office, land and subjects within the Manwere was modified or otherwise altered by the nature of the political vicissitudes through which the Asante polity passed in the period between – broadly – the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. Underlying the paper, and supplying context to its conclusions, is a general consideration of the philosophy of the Asante ethic concerning such matters as wealth and accumulation, the nature of authority, and the conceptualization of citizenship.

This paper provides an empirical assessment of the relationship between banking, liquidity, investment, terms of trade, bank solvency ratio, financial development and economic growth in the WAEMU zone. The analysis focuses on 7 countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and covers the period 1994-2015. Using the panel data approach, we show that economic growth is positively related with banking on liquidity. In addition, the results highlight the impact of bank liquidity on economic growth but mitigate when it is associated with the investment.

Purpose - This paper examines the mediating effect of positive attitude (ATT) and subjective norm (SJN) on customers’ behavioral intention to participate in Islamic banking in Nigeria using the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) as a basis.Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire with 274 samples. This study used the convenience sampling technique.Findings – The authors found a positive and significant relationship between the factors in the model. The findings highlight the relevance of attitude in the structural model. The findings further show that attitude has a positive effect in mediating the relationship between awareness, knowledge, religion and the behavioural intention of customers.Originality/value - This paper highlights the need for policymakers, regulators and Islamic banking operators to create proper awareness through effective communication with customers on the benefits of Islamic banking and the provision of a platform for knowledge enhancement to promote a positive attitude among the different segments of society and which in turn can influence their intention to participate in Islamic banking.

The purpose of this research is to study the relationship between risk and return on the BRVM. The empirical results, obtained using the Asymmetric Response Model (ARM) model, show the asymmetric nature of the return of the securities that are rated on them. This does not reflect the level of risk taken by investors, which is much higher than the return obtained. While this result is consistent with the distancing characteristics of risk and return observed in emerging markets, it highlights above all the need to rebalance the relationship between risk and return at the RSE in order to make it more attractive for investors.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the mediating effect of an ethical climate on the relationship between organizational justice and workplace stress. The quantitative survey research design was used and cross-sectional data was collected. Structured questionnaires were distributed. The population of the study was nurses from the healthcare professionals working in the healthcare organizations in Qassim region. There are total of 5542 nurses working in different public and private healthcare organizations. Convenience sampling technique was used for selecting sample size. Total 510 completed questionnaires were collected back and used in the study for data analysis. For data analysis, AMOS-SEM was used. Measurement and structural models were developed and tested in the current study. Reliabilities and validities were investigated through the measurement model, while for hypotheses testing structural model was developed. Findings of the study indicated that the scale used in the study was found reliable and valid. Factor loadings, average variance extracted, and construct reliability met the threshold level/standard criteria. The structural model also revealed that ethical climate mediated the relationship between organizational justice and stress. This is the original work and contribution to the body of knowledge by extending the literature on justice, stress, and ethical climate. The presence of justice and ethical climate made it possible for employees to better manage their stress.

The demand on high skill graduate shows increasing trend in the context of Malaysia. Current supply of higher skill graduate is in adequate to support the industry. Thus, the government expected that, the number of student enrolment in higher Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to be increased. Recent studies highlighted that service quality and corporate image are two critical factors that influence student loyalty. However, the mediating effect of corporate image has given less attention in the previous research. Thus, the purpose of this research is to explore the mediating effect of corporate image on the relationship between the service quality and student loyalty. The scope of this study is final year student of higher TVET universities. 398 of completed questionnaires were analyzing using SPSS and Smart-PLS. The measurement model shows that all constructs are reliable. While the structural model result showed that there is a direct and significant effect of corporate image on the relationship between service quality and student loyalty. The mediating test indicates that there is a partial mediation of corporate image on the relationship between service quality and student satisfaction. Future research is suggested to explore in depth on other factors that could have mediate the relationship between service quality and student loyalty.
