Abstract Purpose: To compare gluteal wound healing after dermis fat graft (DFG) implantation in patients with and without local application of kinesiotapes.Methods: In this prospective, single-center analysis, 16 patients who underwent DFG implantation were randomized in two groups. Wound healing was compared 4-6 weeks after therapy and 3 months later (after application of 2 cycles of kinesiotaping for 2-3 weeks in the case and no specific therapy in the control group). Demographic data, patient content and wound healing were assessed. Scarring was graded (0-3) by evaluation of photodocumentation by 2 blinded, independent observers.Results: Mean scar grading by both observers decreased from 2.31±0.48 to 1.13±0.72 in the case and from 2.38±0.52 to 1.44±0.50 in the control group with interobserver-agreement on scar grading being substantial to almost perfect in both groups. Scar length decreased significantly in both groups (p=0.008). Scar prominence decreased in 2/3 of cases in the case and 1/3 in the control group. Scar coloring significantly improved in the case group alone (p=0.031).Conclusion: No functionally impairing or painful scar developed. No adverse effects occurred after kinesiotaping. Gluteal scars shortened significantly over time and were significantly paler in the case group. Objectives: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease. This study aimed to determine the association of interleukin-17A-197G/A polymorphism with rheumatoid arthritis in Sudanese patients. Methods: A case–control study was conducted between March and December 2018. Clinical and demographic data of the study participants were collected and analyzed. Polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism molecular technique was done to investigate interleukin-17A-197G/A polymorphisms. All statistical tests were considered statistically significant when p < 0.05. Results: The study population included 266 participants aged between 1 and 85 years, with an average of 40 years, classified into 85 (31.2%) cases (mean age 48.5 ± 11.3 years), and 181 (68.8%) controls (mean age 35.3 ± 15.9 years). The interleukin-17A homozygote AA genotype was more frequent among the control group compared to the case group; 95 (52.5%) and 7 (8.2%), respectively. The homozygote GG and the heterozygote AG genotypes were proportionally not different among the cases and control groups; 13 (54.2%) and 11 (45.8%), and 65 (46.4%) and 75 (53.6%), respectively. According to the distribution of interleukin-17A genotypes, a statistically significant difference was observed among cases with the interleukin-17A AA and AG genotypes, p values 0.001 and 0.004, respectively. For the association interleukin-17A genotypes and family history a negatively significant association was reported (95% confidence interval, –0.219, p value = 0.001). There was also a negatively significant association of interleukin-17A genotypes and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (95% confidence interval, −0.141, p value = 0.002). Conclusion: This study is the first study in Sudan established the association between interleukin-17A-197G/A (rs2275913) polymorphisms and susceptibly to rheumatoid arthritis. These findings appeal for further research in Sudan to investigate the exact role of IL-17A in immunopathology and disease severity among Sudanese rheumatoid arthritis

Background: The aim of the current study was to assess the fetomaternal effects of oligohydramnios on term pregnancies in a rural tertiary care setup.Methods: A perspective case control hospital-based trial was conducted at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital for a period of one year. Pregnancies at term (37-42 weeks) were included in the study. 103 patients with sonographically diagnosed oligohydramnios were included in the case group. The control group comprised of 103 mothers at term with normal liquor volume. Demographic data and fetomaternal outcome parameters were assessed and compared.Results: There was increased incidence of fetal and perinatal complications including low birth weight, birth asphyxia and NICU admission. There were more perinatal deaths in the case group compared to the control group. Induction of labour, operative delivery, meconium stained liquor and incidence of preeclampsia were also increased in mothers with low AFI.Conclusions: Oligohydramnios is associated with an increased risk of labour and perinatal complications. Adequate antenatal surveillance and intranatal monitoring coupled with correction of underly-ing factors is the mainstay of management.

Abstract Background Coronary hearth diseases are among the main causes of death in adults. Increase of oxidative stress and defects in antioxidant defense play a major role in endothelium performance and are an effective factor in progress of atherosclerosis. Some studies have also reported different malondialdehyde and total antioxidant capacity among the atherosclerosis patients.Methods In this case-control study, 44 atherosclerosis patients referring to Shahid Madani treatment-education center were considered as the case group; while 44 healthy peoples were placed in the control group. Demographic data and anthropometric indices were measured. Food frequency questionnaire and international physical activity questionnaires were also completed. After 12 hours of fasting, 10 ml blood was sampled from the participants. Uric acid, vitamin C, TAC and MDA were also measured. The data were finally analyzed by SPSS Ver 22 software.Results A significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of uric acid (P<0.001) and vitamin C (P<0.03). However, mean MDA and TAC showed no significant difference between the two groups. The two groups’ difference in terms of vitamin A, E and beta carotene, zinc and selenium intake was not significant. A significant difference was however detected between the two groups in terms of vitamin C (P<0.047). A significant relationship was also observed between the systolic pressure and CHD (P<0.028).Conclusion Results of this study indicated that the uric acid and vitamin C levels of atherosclerosis patients had significant increase and decrease in comparison with the healthy subjects, respectively. Mean TAC and antioxidant levels of their diets (except for vitamin C) showed no significant difference. Systolic blood pressure of the patients was significantly higher than the controls.

Puerperium is a period when the mother experiences intense physical and emotional stress due to exhaustion, anxiety and excitement. Each mother has to adjust to physical changes in her own body due to involution and lactation as well as cope up with the new demands on her time and emotions made by the new born baby. Episiotomy, despite evidences that it is an unnecessary intervention, is one of the most common surgical procedures performed during the second stage of labour, especially in primigravida woman. Thus, a randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of topical application of chlorhexidine and prevailing practices on episiotomy wound among postnatal mothers at selected hospital of Indore was undertaken. True experimental approach with pre test post test research design was adopted. Simple random sampling was taken to select 40 postnatal mothers with episiotomy wound and three days postpartum hospital stay in Choithram Hospital & Research Centre, Indore as per the inclusion criteria. Data was collected with help of questionnaire for socio demographic data and obstetrical data and the wound healing was assessed by REEDA wound healing assessment scale. Samples in the experimental group were applied with chlorhexidine on episiotomy wound and the samples in the control group received routine care with betadine or nadoxin. Post assessment score was taken on third day (evening) by REEDA wound assessment scale. Finding of the study related to effectiveness of chlorhexidine among postnatal mothers in experimental group revealed that there was a significant difference in the healing of episiotomy wound by the application of chlorhexidine among postnatal mothers in experimental group at t19 = 11.40 at the level of p< 0.001. Hence it was inferred that topical application of chlorhexidine on episiotomy wound promotes wound healing.

Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) is a common infection in children, especially in the developing countries. The infection is usually asymptomatic but it may cause gastrointestinal diseases. In children, the symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting and anemia. Recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) is a common cause of children’s referral. But, whether H. Pylori causes RAP in children has to be scrutinized to prevent further complications by proper diagnosis and treatment. However, there is still controversy in the literature regarding this issue. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association between H. Pylori and RAP in children. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, the children with RAP aged 2-10 years who referred to a private pediatric clinic in Marvdasht, Iran, were compared to other children without RAP, during 2015. The sample size was calculated to be 70 for each case and the control group. The patients were visited by a gastro-enterologist who recorded the demographic data of all the patients and the findings of stool test for H. Pylori. To assess the association of RAP with H. Pylori, the odds ratio was calculated. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0 software. The P-values less than 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results: The mean age of the participants was 7.35±3.11 (with a range of 2-10). In the case group, 41/70 and 69/70 of the control group were girls. H. Pylori was found positive in 37 cases (52.9%) of the case group and 11 (15.7%) in the control group (P<0.001, OR=6.01, 95% CI=2.71-13.34). Logistic regression with adjustment for age indicated that there was a positive association between positive H. Pylori and abdominal pain (OR=16.69, 95% CI=4.71-59.18). This model also showed that by adjusting the H. Pylori test result, age was also positively associated with abdominal pain (OR=0.27, 95% CI=0.18-0.45). A T-test also indicated that the mean titer of H. Pylori was significantly higher in case group (1.42±1.29) than the control group (0.86±1.52) (P=0.020). Conclusion: There was a statistically significant correlation between H. Pylori and RAP. [GMJ. 2016;5(1):19-24]

Purpose: To investigate the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), macular RNFLT, ganglion cell layer (GCL), and inner plexiform layer (IPL) thickness in recovered COVID-19 patients compared to controls. Methods: Patients previously diagnosed with COVID-19 were included, while healthy patients formed the historic control group. All patients underwent an ophthalmological examination, including macular and optic nerve optical coherence tomography. In the case group, socio-demographic data, medical history, and neurological symptoms were collected. Results: One hundred sixty patients were included; 90 recovered COVID-19 patients and 70 controls. COVID-19 patients presented increases in global RNFLT (mean difference 4.3; CI95% 0.8 to 7.7), nasal superior (mean difference 6.9; CI95% 0.4 to 13.4), and nasal inferior (mean difference 10.2; CI95% 2.4 to 18.1) sectors of peripapillary RNFLT. Macular RNFL showed decreases in COVID-19 patients in volume (mean difference −0.05; CI95% −0.08 to −0.02), superior inner (mean difference −1.4; CI95% −2.5 to −0.4), nasal inner (mean difference −1.1; CI95% −1.8 to −0.3), and nasal outer (mean difference −4.7; CI95% −7.0 to −2.4) quadrants. COVID-19 patients presented increased GCL thickness in volume (mean difference 0.04; CI95% 0.01 to 0.07), superior outer (mean difference 2.1; CI95% 0.8 to 3.3), nasal outer (mean difference 2.5; CI95% 1.1 to 4.0), and inferior outer (mean difference1.2; CI95% 0.1 to 2.4) quadrants. COVID-19 patients with anosmia and ageusia presented an increase in peripapillary RNFLT and macular GCL compared to patients without these symptoms. Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 may affect the optic nerve and cause changes in the retinal layers once the infection has resolved.

Objectives: The screening of chromosomal aberrations is one of the most common methods during pregnancy although this test is occasionally false-positive. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 252 mothers with false-positive (n=126) and -negative (n=126) tests were evaluated respectively. Demographic data during pregnancy and postpartum included maternal and neonatal complications, and finally, perinatal variables were compared between the two groups. Results: The mean age of the case group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.001). In addition, lower smoking history in the spouse (P = 0.01), higher prevalence of preeclampsia (P = 0.33) and proteinuria (P = 0.03), preterm infant (P = 0.01), and low birth weight (P = 0.04) were observed in this group as well. Eventually, the shorter height P = 0.004) and lower 5-minute Apgar score (P = 0.03) were found in infants. Conclusions: In general, mothers with positive screening results showed a higher risk of preeclampsia and preterm labor in comparison with those with false-negative screening results.

Background: Wound healing is a complex process and in some patients, it is a long process. Due to the presence of various underlying diseases in patients with cancer, this process is delayed, and as a result, the rate of complications increases. Therefore, some materials are needed to accelerate wound healing. Nowadays efficacy of dry human amniotic membrane in burn wounds and chronic wounds is proven; however, no studies have been performed on the effect of this tissue in the treatment of surgical wounds. Objectives: This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of dry human amniotic membrane in the secondary repair of urological cancer surgery wounds. Methods: In this randomized clinical trial from January 2018 to June 2020, 40 patients who underwent urological cancer surgery and secondary intention wound healing were selected and randomly divided into 2 groups of 20 patients. In the case group, the dry human amniotic membrane was used for dressing wounds, and in the control group, normal dressing without an amniotic membrane was performed. Complications such as infection, sepsis, and reoperation, as well as the duration of wound healing and hospitalization of patients at intervals of 1 week, 1, and 3 months, were compared between the 2 groups. Results: The 2 groups matched in terms of gender, age, and wound location. The mean duration of hospitalization and wound healing was significantly lower in the case group (P < 0.05). The rate of complications was higher in the control group but was not significant. Conclusions: Dry human amniotic membranes due to the accelerated wound healing process and fewer complications could be a good choice for secondary healing of wounds after urological cancer surgery.

Methods Urine samples were collected from 157 women with fetal malformations (case group) and 147 women with normal fetuses (control group). High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) was used to detect the content of eight metabolites of phthalate compounds in urine, including monoethyl phthalate (MEP), mononbutyl phthalate (MBP), monoisobutyl phthalate (MiBP), mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl) phthalate (MECPP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP), and mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP). Demographic data were collected from questionnaires administered in specimen collection. Results The exposure level of MEOHP and MEHP in the case group was higher than the others. And there were significant differences between structural malformations and chromosomal malformations in the levels of MEHHP and MEOHP. Pregnant women with low income, high body mass index (BMI), frequent plastic contact, and low nutrients intake were at risk of suffering from fetal malformation. Conclusion This study provides evidence for the correlation between the concentration of phthalates and fetal malformation. In addition, decreasing plastic exposure and supplementing nutrients may reduce the incidence of fetal malformations.

Abstract Background In order to prevent oral diseases, the use of appropriate oral health education at childhood is one of the most important strategies for improving oral health knowledge and by extension positive oral health habits. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of animations and games as a strategy for improving oral health self-efficacy and self-care behaviors among 6–12-aged students. Methods In this interventional study, 82 students were selected based on cluster random sampling including 38 for the case and 44 for the control group. The case group received four sessions of combined learning per week including animations and games while the control group received routine school education. The data were collected in six domains including demographics, self-care, knowledge, attitude, behavior and self-efficacy before and 5 months after the intervention using a questionnaire. SPSS version 20 was used for data analysis. Results Five months after the intervention, the mean score of self-care, self-efficacy, behavior increased from 3.8 to 4.8, 36.8 to 48.9, and 17.07 to 18.29, respectively indicating a significant change (p < 0.05). However, no significant change was reported in these variables in the control group (p  > 0.05). Conclusion The use of animation combined with other strategies for oral health self-care education can positively influence the students' performance and self-efficacy.
