This chapter offers a study of the iconoclastic Uchida Shungiku and her series of pregnancy manga, We are Breeding, 1994-. Uchida has become notorious in Japan not only for her willingness to expose the seamy underside of Japanese family life (chronicled in her 1993 autobiographical novel Father Fucker), but also for her own unorthodox attitudes towards marriage and child-rearing. While becoming a mother has given Uchida a platform to assail the unfairness of the patriarchal Japanese family system, she refuses to allow motherhood to define her as a woman. For Uchida, pregnancy has served as a means of self-assertion, transforming her into an avatar of Japanese post-feminism. More recently, Uchida has turned her attention from making children to raising them: her frank and often funny sex-education manga (Sex for Girls), addressed to her own daughters, attempts to provide an honest discussion about sex and the body in contemporary Japan.

An attempt was made to relate Thorne and Faro's measure of parent ego state to child-rearing attitudes of college students. Results showed only limited support for the ego-state measure. Correlations were as expected for the nurturant-parent ego state but only for men. Few attitudes correlated significantly with the critical parent ego state.

It appears to me that one of the implications of the Academy's statement on family life and sex education (Pediatrics, 42: 535, 1968) is that such programs are a form of immunization against the social health problems of today's society. If this is truly the feeling of the committees jointly represented, I would like to point out that there is no valid proof of this statement. In my experience, many practicing physicians, be they family physicians or pediatricians, are totally unprepared and are psychologically unable to effectively serve as the supportive link and catalyst for the instruction of parents and schools the Academy recommends.

To compare parental attitudes of alcoholics and nonalcoholics a parental attitude questionnaire (PARI-Q4) was administered to a stratified sample of alcoholic veterans in a VA alcohol treatment program and to nonalcoholic male veterans employed at the VAMC. The f-test was used to test equality between samples. Pearson's r was used to correlate for age on all scales. ANOVA methods were used to correlate race, social class, and fatherhood variables. Significant differences between the groups appeared on six scales, “Encouraging Verbalization,” “Avoiding Harsh Punishment,” “Encouraging Emotional Expression,” “Irresponsibility of Father,” “Inconsiderate-ness of Wife,” and “Tolerating Aggression.” No significant differences regarding fatherhood, race, age or social class were found. Since alcoholism was the only significant variable found in this study it points to the need for intervention through teaching parental skills to alcoholics to decrease the risk of their children becoming alcoholics.

Families in which a parent has died will show a variety of reactions and recovery patterns. This article examines several factors which contribute to this variance. Within the framework of a developmental role analysis of the family system, the influence of the stage of the family life cycle, the roles of the deceased, previous patterns of role allocation, and the type of death are discussed. It is suggested that “person oriented” families, characterized by achieved roles, open communication, and flexible power structures, will more effectively reallocate family roles following the death of a spouse/parent. On contrast, “position oriented” families, characterized by ascribed roles, closed communication, and relatively inflexible power structures, will be too dependent on cultural norms and will lack the role-reallocating mechanisms necessary to ensure adequate family functioning following such a death.

This chapter examines attempts to standardize, internalize, and globalize sexual temporality—captured in the conceptualization of the body as clock—in the sexological advice offered to men and women in India in the early twentieth century. It first describes the constitution of “Hindu erotica” during the period and how these English translations gave rise to a set of foundational texts that would become the basis of global/Hindu sexology while filling them up with clock time. It then considers the ways that these texts attached life cycles to the chronological ordering of time by recasting brahmacharya—a prescription for a stage of life devoted to celibacy and learning—as an age-stratified organization of sexual behavior and a schema for sex education. By using the example of bodily temporality, the chapter addresses questions of sexuality and space in relation to globalization and transnational capitalism, colonialism and development.

This chapter discusses the provisions of Art. 7 of the Grundgesetz (GG) concerning the state's organisational power, the freedom to establish private schools, and the legal position of parents, students, and educators. Art. 7 para 1. GG grants the state the authority — and imposes the obligation — to not stand by and allow the school system to be operated on its own, for example by commercial providers or religious or philosophical communities. Other provisions relate to religious instruction and the abolition of the pre-primary school. The chapter examines the jurisprudence of the Federal Constitutional Court with regard to the state's power to organise schools, child-rearing and instruction (for example, the issue of sex education in schools), the rights of parents concerning the care and education of children, and the rights of students in school.

This chapter examines missionaries’ romantic relationships and argues that the way these young adults date, marry, and procreate shapes their position in the US Catholic landscape. These emerging adults develop wide-ranging and gendered interpretations of chastity. They discipline themselves and their co-missionaries to follow Catholic dictums articulated in Humanae Vitae and Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body More than personal ethics, however, this chapter posits that missionaries’ practices of Catholic romance are part of their pro-life politics. How and why these Catholic millennials embody the transitions from singlehood to family life proclaims their proud, dynamically orthodox Catholic alternative to contemporary sexual ethics in the United States.

The school or agency administrator bears the primary responsibility for the successful implementation of a family life and sex education program. An advisory committee, adequate publicity and public relations, provision of specialized training (including the budgeting of time and funds) and appropriate materials, and the careful selection of teaching staff are important areas with which the effective administrator must concern himself.
