Background: A good refractive outcome after cataract surgery indicates adequate clinical service provision. Precise immersion biometry is critical to achieve the desired refractive outcome. While the immersion biometry results are good in the tertiary settings, it is of interest to explore the refractive outcome of cataract surgeries in a rural facility using the same technique. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional review was conducted on medical records of all cataract surgeries carried out in Hospital Keningau, Sabah. This study used all patients’ medical records who had been assessed using immersion biometry pre-operatively, underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery besides attending a post-operative refraction session within 90 days from the operation date. Clinical details were recorded in the form of standard proformas and analysed. The refractive outcome was evaluated using spherical equivalence (SE) and bestcorrected visual acuity (BCVA). The percentage of cases with post-operative SE within ±1.00 diopter (D) and BCVA of ‘6/12 or better’ were determined. The association between demographic factors and surgical-related factors with post-operative SE was evaluated using Fisher’s exact test. Results: Of 140 cataract surgeries, 113 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The average patient age was 66.3 (SD = 10.9) years old. The technique was proven to replicate a good outcome of 84.1% of cases with post-operative SE within ±1.00 D while 90.3% of the cases achieved BCVA of ‘6/12 or better’. Age and ethnicity were found to be associated with post-operative SE. Conclusion: The study proves the reproducibility of good refractive outcome in a rural facility using immersion biometry. The findings provide a benchmark for performance surveillance in rural facilities.

Background: The growing middle-class population of Ghana has seen more people being employed in visually demanding occupations  and hence there is an increased desire for quality post-cataract surgical visual outcomes. This study aimed at comparing the outcomes of manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) and phacoemulsification (PHACO) among Ghanaians. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study in which records of patients who underwent MSCIS or phacoemulsification by the same surgeon were reviewed. Results: Medical records of 248 eyes were reviewed, out of which 132 underwent PHACO and 116 had MSICS. A significant number of the  PHACO group had good (6/6–6/18) uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) compared to the MSICS group at 1–2 weeks follow-up (p = 0.003) and 4–6 weeks follow-up (p = 0.002). MSICS resulted in a higher total astigmatic change compared to PHACO (p < 0.001). The PHACO grouphad a higher number of postoperative complications compared with the MSICS group (p <0.001). Postoperative borderline and poor  uncorrected visual acuity were associated with age, total astigmatic change, and postoperative complications. Conclusion: The postoperative UCVA outcomes at 4–6 weeks’ follow-up indicates that PHACO resulted in noticeably less spectacle dependency when compared to MSICS.

Drugs’ administration among hospitalized patients in ICU commonly is given intravenously. Mixing the intravenous drugs may result in incompatibility problem that might affect the drugs’ stability and bioavailability. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential incompatibility problem of  intravenous mixing drugs’ administration among ICU patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Hospital. This study was a cross-sectional study in which design and data was obtained from ICU patients’ medical record retrospectively with purposive sampling in order to observe the pattern of intravenous drug’s combination. The potential incompatibility problem was analyzed using Handbook on Injectable Drugs. There were 79 out of 119 medical records which fulfilled sample inclusion criteria taken in this study. Parenteral dosage form was commonly used rather than non parenteral (62.06%) among ICUs’ patients. The potential incompatibility pattern consisted of incompatibility of intravenous drugs, electrolyte solutions/parenteral nutritions in mixture form, and the electrolyte solutions/parenteral nutritions, which are administrated simultaneously. Potential incompatibility of intravenous dosage was found in 50 events out of 79 patients (0.63 events per patients), which consisted of 8 events (8.51%) in using of drugs administrated simultaneously, 10 events (19.23%) in using of electrolyte solutions/parenteral nutritions in mixture form, and 32 events (11.72%) in using of electrolyte solutions/parenteral nutritions administrated simultaneously. Common potential incompatibilities types were precipitation of drugs and drug’s adsorption to packaging materials.

Abstract Background Cataract development is common in phakic eyes filled with silicone oil (SO), necessitating subsequent cataract removal. This study evaluated the refractive outcome in eyes filled with SO undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery (PCS). Methods This retrospective study evaluated patients with SO tamponade who were scheduled for PCS. Results Subjects (n=26) were followed-up for 29.5 ± 13.9 months after cataract surgery. The median spherical equivalent refraction (SER) was +5.3 D (interquartile range [IQR] +2.9 to +6.7) before PCS, and +3.4 D (IQR +2.0 to +4.4) after PCS. Within the follow-up period retinal reattachment after SO removal was achieved in 15 out of 26 eyes (57.7%). In 13 eyes assessment of refraction after SO-removal was possible, and showed a myopic shift of -4.6 D (IQR -2.9 to -7.3) in the SER. After SO removal, 5 of 13 eyes (38.5%) were within ±1.0 D of the target refraction, while 9 out of 13 eyes (69.2%) were within ±2.0 D. Conclusions The refractive outcome after PCS for eyes filled with SO is less predictable than that for normal eyes. Some of the eyes undergoing silicone oil injection may require long-term tamponade.

Aims: In order to reduce the rate of cesarean section (CS), it is necessary to be aware of attitudes of women to predict their preferred method of delivery and its related factors. This study aimed to compare attitudes of medical and non-medical female students regarding the preferred method of delivery and its related factors in 2019. Study Design:  cross sectional-analytical study. Place and Duration of Study: Medical and non-medical undergraduate female students of Guilan, Rasht, Iran, were randomly selected between October 2019 and November 2019. Methodology: We included 1040 students (873 non-medical, 167 medical students; mean age 20.90 ± 1.54 years). The data were collected by a researcher-made questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential (Chi Square, Fisher's exact test, Kruskal–Wallis, Mann-Whitney and multiple regression) statistics (P =.05). Results: In general, 71.50% of subjects in both groups had a neutral attitude. For group comparison, the medical and non-medical groups (24% and 12.40%) had a positive attitude towards CS and (11.40% and 14.80%) had a positive attitude towards normal vaginal delivery (NVD), respectively. Attitude score according to the university (P =.002), the school (P =.002), the academic year (P =.001), age (P =.031), ethnicity (P =.001), child rank (P =.042), father education (P =.007), mother education (P =.006), childbirth method of the mothers in other children (P =.007), and delivery method of the relatives (P =.05) was significant. Conclusion: Although non-medical students had more possitive attitude towards NVD, in general, in both groups, the majority of them had a neutral attitude towards the mode of delivery. It seems necessary to develop the educational-counseling interventions to form a positive attitude towards NVD in all students and youngs.

Abstract Objective: to evaluate the prevalence of symptoms of depression among men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their association with quality of life and treatment-related factors. Methods: a cross-sectional study of 85 men with a mean age of 66±8 years who were diagnosed with prostate cancer was performed. The survey was based on a questionnaire with previously validated instruments which investigated social, demographic and economic characteristics, the history of the disease, quality of life (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Questionnaire C30 - EORTC QLQ-C30 / QLQ-PR25) and symptoms of depression (Beck Depression Inventory). The presence of symptoms of depression was considered an outcome, and statistical analyzes were performed using the Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, Mann Whitney U test and Poisson regression (p<0.05). Results: significant results were found for quality of life in relation to symptoms of depression in the functional, global and symptomatic health scale (p<0.001). This demonstrates that the presence of symptoms of depression is related to a negative quality of life. Conclusions: for a greater understanding of prostate cancer and its consequences on the quality of life of patients it is important to consider possible disorders in psychological aspects caused by the illness, as symptoms of depression are frequent in patients undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

Background. Preventive dentistry, including supportive periodontal therapy (SPT), is one of the most critical areas of attention. Despite SPT’s importance in the long-term success of periodontal treatment, the patients’ adherence to it is weak. The present study aimed to evaluate of periodontal disease’s recurrence rate and its related factors in periodontal patients without regular follow-up. Methods. A cross-sectional study was set in a specialized periodontics clinic in Tehran, Iran. Patients with periodontitis who completed periodontal therapy during 2005–2014 and did not adhere to the maintenance phase were evaluated. The periodontal history of the patients was updated. The previous diagnoses of patients according to their previous periodontal charts were revised by AAP 2015 criteria. Then, periodontal parameters were assessed, and current periodontal status was evaluated. Statistical analyses consisted of Fisher’s exact test, t-test, Man-Whitney test, and Kruskal-Wallis test. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used to assess the relationship between factors and variables. Results. Fifty patients were evaluated, including 29 males and 21 females. There was a significant relationship between the initial diagnosis and recurrence rate of periodontitis (P=0.017). There was also a significant relationship between the recurrence of periodontitis and the years elapsed since the initial treatment (P=0.027, r = 0.353). Smoking significantly affected tooth loss (P=0.001). Conclusion. Patients with severe periodontitis need more attention to participate in supportive periodontal care. The patients must be aware of the disadvantages of neglecting this phase and be reminded of regular follow-up.
