This article argues that ‘substantial progress derives from informal reasoning and qualitative insights’. It shows the role played by causal process observations (CPOs), and qualitative reasoning more generally, in a series of well-known episodes drawn from the history of medicine. Edward Jenner published twenty-three case studies to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of ‘vaccination’. Ignac Semmelweis discovered the cause of puerperal fever. John Snow revealed that cholera was a water-borne infectious disease, which could be prevented by cleaning up the water supply. Christiaan Eijkman's research plan was to use Koch's methods, and show that beriberi was an infectious disease. Joseph Goldberger believed that pellagra was a deficiency disease. Frederick McKay and his connection with fluoridation, and the discovery of Alexander Fleming to penicillin, are discussed. In addition, the breakthrough of German measles by Norman Gregg is reported. Finally, Arthur Herbst offers the association between diethylstibestrol and adenocarcinoma of the vagina.

The paper deals with the problems while planning the application of method of observation as the primary method for data collection. These include determining the objectives, theoretical and operational elaboration of the research plan and collection of initial evidence from other sources of data that can be used to successfully plan research mainly based on observation. In the first section of the paper it is pointed to the unjustified overemphasis of differences between participatory and non-participatory forms of observation in its planning. The second section shows the possibility of its application to other sources and methods of data collection when planning observations. Special attention is paid to the role of interview and sequential analysis. In the third section, the issues of preparing data analysis in the planning of observation are specifically discussed. The fourth section shows the specificity of the planning of observation, depending on the nature of the data. We also considered the concretization of the plan of observation, including the selection of size, location and time for performing monitoring and positioning one or more observers. The fifth section briefly points to some suggestions about training observers. The concluding section of the paper deals with planning during the observations, with emphasis on grounded theory.

Management control system is putatively vital for management to resemble organisational performance. The objective of the study is to understand the role of management control system in organisational efficacy. Management control system has obtained growing attention within both academia and industry as part of OE. As works of literature grow, finding new directions by critically evaluating the research and identifying future trends has become central in advancing knowledge for the field. This paper will review some of the work done in this area of study. Applying management control system as a theoretical lens, we develop a research plan from current OE and management control system literature by offering propositions for future research where management control system may permeate contemporary OE topics. In doing so, we provide an initial foundation for organisational efficacy scholars to both incorporate the role of management control system effects into research and launch new research stream.

This paper reports an action research program designed to develop new approaches for a locally based Swedish R&D unit’s task to facilitate improvement in partner organizations, and to provide guidance on how to manage challenges in action research programs focusing on development in health and social care. Data were gathered from interviews with R&D members’, managers representing the two embedded pilot cases, as well as from the lead action researchers. Key findings were the need to continually monitor and revise the action research plan and that each step should be given specific weights based on the conditions at hand. As the action program evolved the participants were given autonomy to take action in the partner organizations and the role of the action researchers became advisory and consultative. These findings accentuate the emergent nature of action research and the need for flexible and dynamic intervention planning, especially when multiple level actors and several organizations are involved. Based on these findings we discuss some implications for the action researcher’s role and how similar programs can be designed to manage change in complex health and social care systems reaching various stakeholders at many levels.

Muslim minorities always need to enter the circle of research, because we find them living among societies that differ in their habits, customs and rulings. So they need special rules of arbitration and litigation for the arising disputes between them.  This research explains the importance of the arbitration and litigation among the Muslim minorities, so as not heavily exposed to the country’s courts and the states in which they reside, to end the rivalries and disputes that arise between them. This shows the importance of the establishment of the Islamic centers and councils in the foreign countries to activate the role of the Mufti, arbitration and litigation without breaking any local laws in these countries, and also by showing the tolerance of Islam on the correct way and by the understandings of the ancestors of the Muslim nation. This research has an introduction, two sections and a conclusion as follows: The introduction contains the importance and the methodology of the research, and the previous studies. Then the research plan which contains:  The origins of arbitration for Muslim minorities which has two subsections: Arbitration and its Islamic rules for minorities and minorities need to arbitration.  The judiciary and the trials of minorities which has two subsections: the minority judiciary in lawsuits and family cases, the minority courts should punish for all crimes by simple punishments and not capital punishment.  And finally the conclusion which contains the findings and recommendations.
